When I first got pregnant and found out about all the foods you’re supposed to avoid, I was pretty shocked at how extensive the list was! Alcohol and sushi were no brainers, but soft serve ice cream? Raw sprouts? Prepackaged salads? I had no idea!
Certain foods should be avoided by pregnant women because of the risk of e. coli, listeria, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella. Fish and shellfish consumption should be limited because of their mercury content. This is a great list of seafood and the frequency with which you can eat them. It’s a lot to remember so of course we’ve created a handy dandy printable checklist of Foods to Avoid While Pregnant for you!
These are some of my all time favorite foods, and of course I find myself craving the very things I’m not supposed to eat most. I know many a pregnant woman who has had sushi, oysters, or wine and had perfectly healthy babies. My former ob even told me she had sushi when she was pregnant. But being the worry wart that I am, I’ve been very good about giving up all these foods while pregnant. However, this is the meal I want to eat after I have the baby!
– Oysters on the half shell
– Uni
– Medium Rare Bone-in Ribeye Steak
– Top Dog Spicy Link Hot Dog
– Ham Sandwich (I never crave this except when I’m pregnant)
– Red Mango Frozen Yogurt
– Brie/Feta/Blue Cheese
– Prosciutto/Soppressatta
– Over Easy Eggs
What forbidden foods did you crave while you were pregnant?

Wow, I never knew about the FroYo, and here I was contributing to the delinquency of a pregnant woman by taking my friend for FroYo.

I also didnt know about soft serve/frozen yogurt. I think I had quite a bit while I was pregnant. While I never had any alcohol while I was pregnant, I honestly admit that I should have been better about what I ate (and didn’t avoid).

Well as much as this list is good to have on hand, I think you can eat pretty much anything in moderation. For example, I didn’t stop myself from eating Mayo. I LOVE Mayo. But again, in moderation.

mayo that you buy from the store is fine to eat because it’s pasteurized. it’s only mayo made with raw eggs like you’d make at home that is off limits.

I quit coffee cold turkey right before getting pregnant and that was the hardest thing to do! Now I’m back to my daily 4 shot espresso habit. I blame the extra caffeine intake on mommyhood.

I didn’t know about some of these foods til I got pregnant either. I was soo sad about no ice cream and all my FAVORITE cheeses are on the no-no list.

what i would give to eat a ny deli rare roast beef sandwich. and a medium rare steak. and some sushi rolls. mmm.
hmm didn’t know that about raw sprouts. oops. i had some while eating some vietnamese. =T what’s wrong with sprouts? what about packaged spinach? although i pretty much cook those.
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
@tequiero – you can get salmonella or e coli from raw sprouts since they grow in water… lots of bacteria.
and you don’t know how well prepackaged salads have been washed, so there is the potential of toxoplasmosis and listeria.

I have been craving deli meats like never before. I still eat them once in a while because while I know they can be harmful, I think most foods are ok in moderation. My doctor hasn’t said one word about foods to avoid, so I’m not worried.
I’ve also had frozen yogurt soft serve, beef carpaccio, sushi, and brie. Call me rebellious, I guess!

I too am ALWAYS craving what I can’t have! Sushi tops my list, as well as a roast beef sandwich that is on the rare side (which I may or may not have indulged in once or twice). Oh and deli meat, I never in a million years thought I would miss a turkey sandwich the way I do now!!

I didn’t know about the softserve/fro yo either!

I knew about the sushi, but I had no idea about the frozen yogurt and feta cheese

wow this list is extensive. In my 3 pregnancies I dont think I cut anything out, because most of the time I never had cravings or even wanted to eat. I had deli meat, lots of red mango, and even sushi. My first doctors always told me that anything is fine in moderations, and that’s what I do, My advice would to be careful and make sure places u go to eat are reputable. Someone once told me that if you cut out fish, you’ll be lacking omega 3 which is very important in brain development, so theorectically the risk of mercury was outweighed in his mind.

I’ve been dying for some sushi for months! I also need to constantly remind myself not to eat things with raw eggs! It’s so hard not to lick the spoon covered in batter!

I’m not looking forward to cutting out the sushi… and now you just made the list longer, ack!

I’ve had froyo & soft cooked eggs. I’ve avoided everything else, but none of my friends had ever heard of the froyo & as long as your egg shells are clean, the eggs ought to be fine.
I am LONGING for sushi, though.

haha! I thought I was the only one planning my post delivery meal. I’m still 3 months out, but have been giving this a lot of thought lately. I’ve been having onion/garlic/pepper aversions during this pregnancy, so I am thinking about a nice fat hoagie!

I didn’t know about FROYO?! I’ve been allowing myself to indulge in thai ice tea froyo occasionally.
I’m planning my post-delivery meal also! I can’t wait for sushi, oysters and medium rare steak!!

I didn’t know about Froyo either. I CRAVE ham sandwiches now with baby #2. That and sushi.
It’s funny how I wasn’t craving this with Noah.

I did some research and found that as long as meat is cooked to 160 degrees, it is ok. My husband and I went to a steak restaurant last night for our anniversary and I asked for my steak 160 degrees. They were so kind about it and the waiter even double-checked the temp before he brought it to the table. It turned out to be just over medium. I wasn’t still mooing but it was still delicious. I think I can manage with that.

I tried printing this out, but it’s not clickable/enlargeable like the other checklists– would you guys be able to fix that? Thanks

this is so helpful. could you explain the soft serve/froyo ban? i haven’t had any, but i don’t understand why they are on the list. the thing i miss the most is coffee…especially around 3 pm every day. i could really use that afternoon boost!

My doctor listed a bunch but trying to remember it all was like whoa. Thanks for posting this. If only this was in pdf format I can stick this to my fridge
Sadness about fro-yo! Who knew…

While I totally agree that pregnant women need to be careful about what they eat, I think it is important to not get freaked out about what you eat. Like pp suggest, everything in moderation. On book that really helped me during pregnancy was Fearless Pregnancy.
Also, regarding all those soft cheeses listed, I believe the warning is only for cheese made from non pasteurized milk. Most cheese made in the US is made from pasteurized milk..double check the label if you are unsure.

I ate sushi when prego with my first, my midwife said it was fine as long as I trusted the source. This time around I am choosing to be more cautious and I miss it. Well, and of course my wine and beer too!

I ate a slice of summer sausage today. It’s from a trusted source as well. I read a mix of things on it being safe or not. I feel fine so far. It’ll probably be my one slice of summer sausage throughout the pregnancy.

Isn’t it only UN-pasteurized soft cheeses? Most soft cheeses in stores are pasteurized so they are safe during pregnancy.

I had a glass of wine or a beer a week after my doctor and my doula assured me it was fine. Herbal teas – depends on the herbs!
Why no cured meats? Do they carry yucky bacteria like lunch meats? I had not heard that one.

Oh, I wish I could eat Tiramisu. Thanks for the list, its pretty help. Do you have a list of food to avoid for breast feeding moms?

if you eat packaged salads is that bad? will it harm the baby? I’ve been on a salad frenzy this past week. I hope i’m not hurting the baby.

It’s definitely important to note that the key behind soft cheeses (and even eggs!) is that they need to be pasteurized. I’ve been able to find several brands of brie, goat cheese and other soft cheeses that are. As for soft serve/Fro-Yo … that’s a recommendation, but none of the government agencies I looked into say a word about it. It has to do with the cleanliness of the machines it comes out of. I’ve heard to avoid getting it from places like fairs and corner stores if you’re really worried – but you can generally trust bigger name places to take good enough care that there isn’t a risk.

Is there a printable version of this somewhere or should I just print a screen shot?
Thanks!

I also think it’s helpful to know why things are on the list. There are different severity and effects. Listeria is probably the scariest of them all, and it can be found in just about anything. Listeria had been found in lunch meats a while back but the deli meat industry really cleaned up afterwards so all the recent outbreaks have not occurred in lunch meats. Both big outbreaks of salmonella and the most deadly outbreak of listeria were in cantaloupes, however nobody EVER says no cantaloupes. It seems sad so many people avoid perfectly fine foods especially in moderation, when really, if you want to be that safe, the best way to be would be just not to eat anything raw or eat out. And cheeses? If pasteurized, soft cheeses are the same as cracker barrel cheddar. As for caffeine (coffee) there is no hard link between coffee and baby. They have found that people who continue to drink coffee in their first trimester MAY have higher chance of miscarriage. But there is also thinking that, if you are like most people, you can’t tolerate coffee when you have morning sickness. So the women who were able to drink coffee in their first trimesters were those who didn’t really experience morning sickness. And while it’s not an indicator, it’s known that you CAN be more likely to miscarry if you don’t have morning sickness – so that could be the link, and not the actual caffeine.. Needless to say, I’m conscious of what I eat, but I haven’t avoided anything on that list altogether. Just in moderation as many say.
