You probably already received some well-known advice for traveling with an infant, such as bringing a copy of baby’s birth certificate, nursing/feeding during takeoff and landing, and of course, having plenty of toys on hand.

But en route to our six trips so far (and counting!), Baby Maxwell and I have picked up or devised some other useful tidbits. I thought it would be fun to share new ideas on this topic, so this is my second installment of “Quirky Travel Tidbits (You Wish You Didn’t Discover the Hard Way)!”

Some are common sense (you’ll probably say, duh!) and some are admittedly weirder than others, but they worked for us–try at your own discretion!

{ Tidbit No. 2 } Nurse your baby upright.

via Time Magazine

If your baby has grown too long to lay sideways on your lap in a narrow airplane seat, I recommend nursing your baby in an upright position. You know that Time Magazine cover where the mom is breastfeeding her three-year old child who is standing up? Well, it’s like that, only your baby is sitting up and straddling your waist. (To attempt this nursing position, your baby should be able to hold his neck upright and sit up on his own.)

How I learned this lesson:

A screaming, kicking baby who just didn’t have enough space to nurse comfortably in his usual position forced me to think outside of the box for creative solutions. Yes, it does look a little weird, but it made nursing in tight quarters a breeze. The passenger seated next to you will thank you. It also works well in airport chairs and on the floor! Bonus: this position doesn’t require a nursing pillow or you to support a heavy infant! The only downside? Maxwell now thinks anytime he’s sitting on my lap facing me that it’s time to nurse!

Do you have any unusual nursing positions?
