Fall is here, and so is caramel apple season!  I love to make caramel apples when the apples are in season. This year I decided to do something a little bit different.  I was inspired by the current ombré trend, and decided to make an ombré caramel apple!

It really was easy to do — the hardest part was waiting for the layers to dry in between.  But, it was all worth it after I cut up my first ombré striped slice!

This is what you will need:

Melting Caramel
Apples
Apple Sticks
Melting Chocolate

1) Place the stick in the top of the stem-less washed apple
2) Melt the caramel in a microwave safe dish according to package instructions
3) Dip the apple into the melted caramel, and coat well. Be sure to allow the caramel to drip off.
4) Place the dipped apple onto a piece of parchment paper and allow to harden. You can place them in the fridge for about 10-15 minutes to harden quicker.

5) Melt the Chocolate according to the package directions in the color of your choice.  I used Red Candy wafers mixed with White Candy wafers in order to make it a little lighter red. Dip the caramel dipped apple into the first layer of melted chocolate.  I chose to do the dark ombre layer first, so you will dip the entire apple into this chocolate mixture. After you dip the apple in the first chocolate layer, allow the chocolate to drip off.  Place it back onto the parchment paper, and place in the fridge for the chocolate to harden (about 10-15 minutes). The chocolate layer has to be hardened before you move to the next step, or it will melt the color layers together if you move on too soon.

6) Add some white chocolate wafers to the colored chocolate to lighten up for the next ombre layer, and re-melt the chocolate in the microwave at 50% power in 50 second increments until it is melted.  Add as many as you need in order lighten it up as much as you would like.  Note that the melted chocolate looks lighter than it will when it is hard.
7) Once the next lighter layer is melted, and the first layer is hardened, dip the apple into the melted chocolate 3/4 of the way up.  Allow the chocolate to drip off the bottom, then place on parchment paper in the fridge to harden for 10-15 minutes.
8) Continue the last two steps to create the last, lightest final layer of the ombre apple.  Place on parchment paper and allow to harden in the fridge for 15-20 minutes.  They will last in the fridge for 2-3 days.  So package them up and send them off to friends!
Enjoy!
