At less than three months Cobi was busting out of his swaddles. This is a tutorial on how to do the double swaddle, which is seriously breakout-proof.
We put a swaddle sack (shown is the Kiddopotamus swaddle sack) over the double swaddle, however you can also use a sleep sack.
1. Lay baby on the straight edge of the swaddle blanket (we use Aden & Anais blankets).
2. Tuck one side of the fabric over one arm.
3. Bring the blanket underneath the baby’s back. Don’t pull too tight lest you hurt the baby’s arm, but their arm should be straight by their side.
4. Repeat on the other side.
5. Bring the rest of the blanket between the baby’s legs.
6. Fold up toward their head.
7. Lay it straight across their body. Now, the blanket will be long and cover their face, so fold over the top as you lay it across them.
8. Bring one side of the fabric around, under their body and tuck up under the other side so that the tail end of that fabric rests on their stomach, on the other side.
9. Do the same with the other side; bring the blanket all the way around their body.
10. Done with the double swaddle! You can tuck the tail end into their leg, or leave it. I generally just leave it, since I then put Cobi into a swaddle sack.
11. Put swaddled baby into swaddle sack.
12. A perfectly swaddled baby!

We used the miracle blanket until LMW got too big for it and started breaking out every day. We finally tried the Woombie and it is awesome! I’m actually going to post a side by side comparison of the two soon
My kids are way too sweaty for a double swaddle, unfortunately! Just cotton pajamas and the thin cotton woombie are plenty warm for LMW so I can’t imagine how hot she’d be in two layers of blankets.

I’ve found that swaddles with a really tight weave work the best. I have tried the Aden & Anais, but the weave is just a bit too loose to really stay snug.
I use the Faye & Lou Cozio Extra Large Muslins and they work perfectly without having to double swaddle. My son used those right up until he started rolling at 5 months!
You can find them here:

We did a different version of a double swaddle but also loved A+A blankets. We never put my son in pajamas though if he was in a double swaddle, just a diaper and the swaddles since it stays warm in TX. Very cool technique though.

We use a seperate receiving blanket folded lengthwise into thirds to do her arms like in steps 2-4 and then swaddle over that. Works like a charm!

@pelikila: same- Cobi was either in just a onesie or a diaper at night.
@mrs. wagon: haha yeah that would be a problem! It definitely wasn’t ideal in the summer months- we tried to keep his room very cool.

We went with the woombie too, and it was great because she could still move around in it and self-soothe by sucking on her fist through the woombie!

wow, i never thoughg of a double swaddle. we were very big fans of the swaddle in our household, but used a traditional native american sleeping basket called a pasuk. it’s sort of a swaddle on steroids (more to come on that). love the idea of a double!

This is a brilliant technique. My 11 week old has been breaking out of his swaddles for weeks and I was loathe to go and buy one of those cocoon angel wing things given how many gorgeous muslins and blankets we have. Well this has done the trick! He’s almost asleep before the muslin is wrapped and then I wrap a blanket around him and those hands stay put and he stays asleep. Thank you!

Going to try this tonight, as my LO has been breaking out of her swaddle nightly.
