@scsgalexander: They kept it clean by cycling the water through and skimming with a net. I did shower after (not right away, but within an hour probably). I didn't wear anything. I was totally fine with that as it was just my husband, my midwife and one nurse in there with me. The lights were fairly low and they did a good job of making it a private time.

We wanted a water birth but alas my son wanted to be born on land. I labored in a regular bath tub which took the edge of the pain and screaming. They were trying to get the big tub ready in the alternative birthing room for me. When my midwife checked me again, the baby's head was crowning! She had to force me to get out of the tub so she would have ample room to deliver the baby. I hope my next birth will be in water. How did they keep the tub clean with all the liquids involved in labor? Did you shower afterwards? What did you wear in the tub?

I thought that I wanted a water birth. I gave birth in a birth center and all of the rooms had wonderful tubs. However, as soon as I got in the tub, I knew it wasn't for me. The water felt way too hot, even though they kept bringing the temperature down. I felt like I was sweating buckets! And I couldn't kneel or do anything because I kept floating up-- it was a bizarre feeling-- I felt like I had no control over my body! Your experience sounds like what I envisioned though :)

I guess it's just not for everyone... but if there's a next time, I'm going t give it another go!

If I could do a hospital water birth, I'd consider it! Birthing at home is not for me.

I'm definitely interested in waterbirth. The only thing I worry about is how messy the water will be. I get squeamish about stuff floating in water.

I haven't thought much about it, but your post really has me thinking. Especially the points about reducing the chances of tearing (my BIGGEST fear about giving birth), and the calmness of the baby entering the world in warm water vs the cold air. I'm planning on birthing at a hospital, but I'm curious if they offer a tub or if I need to look into something else! Thanks for this insightful post!!

I had a waterbirth with my second at a hospital birth center. I LOVED that tub and would have chosen it over my husband in a heartbeat. So realxing it let me go with the flow of the contractions, rather than tensing up, which made them work so much better. And it was nice to come out pretty clean.

Yep, its definitely a possibility. Our birth center has tubs in all the rooms and if I want I can birth in the water. I'm sure I will try the tub out during labor and we'll go from there. Who knows what will work during labor but I am open to anything.
