I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: My name is Mrs. Wagon, and I’m a diaperbagaholic. I’ve had so very many diaper bags! I’m extremely picky about my bags and I like to carry one ultimate bag every day for months at a time before I switch, so the search for the perfect diaper bag is really a never ending quest. Plus, as your needs change, your perfect diaper bag’s features change as well.
Right now I’m a working mom of a 3 year old toddler and a 6 month old infant. Since I’ve never been in this stage before, I found myself yearning for yet another new diaper bag, much to Wagon Sr.’s chagrin. We’re still carrying around two separate bags when we’re out and about with both kids, so my diaper bag is primarily for Lil Miss Wagon’s stuff. I was getting sick of transferring my personal items from diaper bag to purse on Fridays and vice versa on Mondays, so I really wanted a beautiful bag that I could carry as both a diaper bag and a purse.
Enter the Danzo Hobo. I’d never heard of this company before, but while browsing diaper bags on Nordstrom’s website I was struck by how chic they looked. I was also struck by how expensive they were…!!! So when I saw them deeply discounted on Gilt, I knew I had to have one. Three agonizing weeks later, I opened the box and unwrapped my perfect diaper bag.
I’m not going to say that this is my Holy Grail of diaper bags since there are still a few things I don’t like about it. But it really is as perfect as it’s going to get for the stage I’m in right now as a mom, and I’m so in love with it that I just had to write this in-depth review. There are so many little details I love about it, so here we go.
I’ll say it up front: this is a huge bag. I knew when I ordered it that it would be one of the biggest bags I’ve carried, and possibly quite heavy. It’s even bigger than my pump bag. But I’m an overpacker so it needs to be this big to accommodate everything that I want to carry day to day.
The nylon material is sturdy and the stitching is impeccable. It really looks and feels like a high quality bag. The top handles are absolutely amazing. They’re just the right length to fit over your shoulder, but it’s also extremely comfortable to wear it in the crook of your elbow. The very, very subtle yet adorable duck detail on the handles is so dear to me– it reminds me that even though this is a very elegant bag, it’s still a diaper bag!
There is a shoulder/messenger strap that attaches to the bag. The appearance of this strap is one of the very few things I don’t like about this bag. It’s shiny and looks like a seatbelt. That being said, the second I used it I understood why they used this type of strap. It’s SO comfortable on your shoulder, no matter how heavy the bag is. I don’t like using backpacks and I don’t like wearing bags messenger-style, so I’m always looking for styles that can be worn as a shoulder bag. But the problem with that is that I have very small, sloping shoulders so things are constantly slipping off my shoulders. This strap is no problem and is very comfortable. I keep it at a short length and it hugs the bottom of the bag nicely when not in use.
The sides of the bag zip down so you can access everything in the bag, even the stuff that gets shoved to the very bottom, which I absolutely love (why don’t all bags do this???). The zipper pulls also feature the duck detail and a leather loop.
The bag has an outside pocket on both sides of the bag. These pockets are incredibly roomy, yet when they are full, they don’t add bulk to the outside or the inside of the bag. Another thing I don’t like about this bag is that there’s no specific place for diapers, wipes, and changing pad like most diaper bags, but I put them both in the outside pockets and they fit nicely and stay hidden.
The inside lining of the bag was one of my favorite things about the bag at first glance. It’s red, navy, and white striped and it’s really eye-catching. There is one large bottle pocket made of this lining, and it’s elasticized at the top. During the work week I use this pocket for my cell phone and other things I want to be able to grab easily.
The inside pockets are made of clear plastic, and the bag comes with many velcro labels you can use to personalize and organize the inside pockets. I thought this feature of the bag was going to be very gimmicky and look quite geeky. But these pockets are a delightful surprise. They’re made of a sturdy clear plastic and are very structured, so things like keys and lip gloss easily slip in. They’ve got velcro closures so things don’t fall out. The labels are made of sturdy red canvas and add such a quirky touch. I love using these pockets for things that are essential to have in the bag, but not necessarily used every day– such as extra baby clothes, medicine / band aids, emergency snacks for Wagon Jr., and makeup items for touch ups. It does bother me a little that none of these pockets are the size of a diaper or a wipes case, and yet they include labels for both. But I’m happy keeping the diapering items in the outside pockets because they stay nice and hidden for when I’m not with LMW, yet they’re easily accessible for when I am.
One huge gripe I’ve had with all other diaper bags is that once you’ve placed items in the inside pockets, the main cavity of the bag has zero space for large items. Even if you stuff things down into the main cavity, it’s impossible to get those things out without taking everything out of the bag. Not ideal when you’re holding a baby!
The closure is one of my favorite things about this bag. Both sides of the magnetized snap are on a loop that you can slip your fingers into to snap it shut. One-handed snap shut, instead of having to line both sides of the bag up with both hands. Another “why don’t all bags do this??” moment.
I am so thrilled with this bag that I am sure I will use this long after LMW is out of diapers!
Have you scored your “holy grail” of diaper bags?

I love how it opens up like that. And the clear pockets are genius! Totally wanting to buy one now!! AUGH!!

I have two(!) MZ Wallace Kate bags that I love. I use one for winter and one for summer. It has a perfect big outer pocket that fits all the diaper-related stuff, and a great roomy pocket for snacks etc, and two bottle pockets. I love that the pockets take most of the stuff that I always need to carry, so the main bag is free for all the random stuff that I need to take with me on a given day. I also love that no one would ever guess it’s a diaper bag. I’ll be using them for years!

This bag is so cute, way to score a good deal on Gilt!

I have not found my perfect diaper bag. I’m a little nervous to start looking since I have found my perfect camera bag, which also looks like and acts as a purse. (Why yes, I do take my big girl camera everywhere… is that wrong?!) As I type this, I think I need to work backwards and find a bigger camera bag that could double as diaper bag. Hmmm…

Great review! I’m still searching for The One…maybe I need a Danzo!

I got mine on Gilt too! I have the same one in red. It is awesome. I spent like 30 minutes on the floor deciding which labels to use! I wanted the Weekender but it was sold out.

I love it!
Would you mind sharing how much it was on Gilt?

@Mrs. Paintbrush: Wagon Sr. has this same problem. I have been waiting for one of these photo mamas to design the perfect camera/diaper bag. There has got to be a way to combine a camera bag with a (waterproof!) compartment for diapers, wipes, and bottles!
@marley: hehe I did the same thing with the labels! I was so sad for the ones that almost made the cut.
@regberadaisy: I think I spent about $175, which included shipping.

Ok, the red Danzo is screaming my name! :-)

@marley: @autumnlove: the red was a CLOSE second choice for me!!!

i so want to love it but not having a zippered top enclosure is a deal breaker for me :(

@mrs. wagon: I’ve been giving this way too much thought… but I wonder if a small wet bag is the solution. Or the really high-end ziploc bag??

Sounds like a great bag and I really like the way it looks!

I ordered both the HOBO and RETRO bag because I didn’t like how the HOBO didn’t zip all the way, but not sure if the RETRO is big enough. Will let you know which one is better!
blogger / honeydew / 8791 posts
@Mrs. Paintbrush: genius. ;D ziploc bags are my best friends!!
@Clementine: AWESOME!! I actually loved the look of the Retro which is what drew me to Danzo in the first place. I ended up ordering the Hobo because I wanted it to double as a work bag but my first love is still the Retro! Can’t wait to hear which one is better!! post pics too :D :D :D

@mrs. wagon: I am sad to report that I just didn’t love the DANZO bags at all because of what you already mentioned in your posts. The pockets were just too small to be convenient for what I wanted to store, although I loved how they were clear. With the Retro unlike the Hobo, you couldn’t just make do and use the side pockets to store big items like diapers and wipes. For those reasons alone, I returned both bags and am still looking for my HG diaper bag. I will say that I did like the Retro better than the HOBO because it was lighter and I am sucker for having a zip top enclosure. If anyone is a big fan of Danzo but don’t want the weight and doesn’t mind not having any large pockets inside their diaper bag then I’d go for that one.

@Clementine: saaaaaaad!!! But thanks for the update. :D Have you looked at the new styles of Petunia Pickle Bottom? There are a few new ones that I haven’t dared peek at (because Wagon Sr. will seriously kill me) that look lighter and a little more sophisticated than their other older styles!

@mrs. wagon: I dunno, I really don’t like their patterns. It too grandma-ish for me. But who knows maybe the new stuff is better, I’ll take a look! :)

@mrs. wagon: I forgot to ask, how did you like your kate spade bags?
blogger / honeydew / 8791 posts
@Clementine: I only had one Kate Spade bag and unfortunately I hated it. :( I spent so much and it was so disappointing that I never pulled the trigger on another one. The one I chose was particularly bad… it was big and heavy but really didn’t hold much AND no zip top OR snap top (just a ribbon tie) so things would just slide right on out when I bent over to pick something up off the ground!! I sold mine at consignment.

@mrs. wagon: was it the stevie? I’ve heard good reviews about that one. I am itching to get that one if it goes on sale again.
blogger / honeydew / 8791 posts
@Clementine: I have heard nothing but good reviews about the stevie as well!! But it was not the stevie… I don’t know if it had a name but it was a large boxy tote style bag.

@mrs. wagon: thank you!

@Clementine: thank YOU… I’ll take a good diaper bag conversation any day!! haha. I’m such an addict. p.s. my kate spade was an outlet purchase almost 4 years ago… I think their diaper bags have come a long way since then!

@mrs. wagon: I just bought a Danzo Hobo and PPB Touring Tote. The Touring Tote is too small so it’s going back. I keep thinking about a PPB Boxy Backpack. Would you recommend the Danzo or PPB Boxy Backpack for a FTM with a newborn? I mainly use big bags for myself so the Danzo’s size doesn’t scare me.
blogger / honeydew / 8791 posts
@swedishfish: I agree, the Touring Tote is really small. I used it a few times when Wagon Jr. got older, for short trips, but never for a full day out. I couldn’t fit a sippy cup in there so I rarely used it.
The Boxy Backpack is really great for newborns because of the changing station. I loved being able to just set the bag down at the end of a changing table and folding out the changing pad. I hate fishing around for the diaper, wipes case, and changing pad then setting my bag down on THE GROUND to change the baby.
If I had another newborn right now I’d probably still use the Boxy. The pockets are nice and big too, while the Danzo really only has two large pockets, which get taken up by the diapers, wipes, and changing pad.
I would say try to find a Boxy to look at in person. They have them at Nordstrom. As a working mom I’d never carry the Boxy anymore– I hate switching bags for the weekend so I actually just carry the Danzo to work!! I absolutely love it.

Have any recommendations for a twin diaper bag??? :)
GOLD / persimmon / 1462 posts
@mrs. wagon: thanks for the advice! DH just picked up a Boxy Backpack in Classically Crete for me. I researched the City Carryall as well but he thought I’d like the Boxy Backpack better when he compared them in person. I can’t wait to see it myself!
blogger / honeydew / 8791 posts
@Alexis: If you like the look of Petunia Pickle Bottom, they have an “Abundance Boxy” that they created specifically for moms of two or more, I think specifically with twins in mind! They are actually having an outlet sale today and there are Abundance Boxys in stock!
@swedishfish: can’t wait to hear what you thought of the PPB!!
GOLD / persimmon / 1462 posts
@mrs. wagon: So I have my Boxy Backpack and just bought a Wistful Weekender and Powder Room Case from the outlet sale. I think I’m on my way to being a diaperbagaholic as well!

I have been looking for a diaper bag that was stylish yet functional and didn’t cost a fortune…. I was looking at skip hop bc of the price and functionality but then realized so many stores carry them in my area! (near Toronto). Anyways, I found the Danzo hobo and now I just read your review. Thank you so much, I can now purchase my first diaper bag without any doubts:) So exciting!!!
