As I work on my baby registry series, I am finding that there are certain things that I didn’t need. Baby goods are expensive and I wouldn’t want you to waste your money, so these are some items that I felt I could live without.
1. Wipes warmer ~ I am a faithful supporter of Moms on Call. In their books, they say that wipes should be used cool so they will be refreshing. Also if you get babies used to the feeling of cool wipes, you won’t have to worry about having warm wipes in public. I use cloth wipes and water and throw them in the washer with my cloth diapers {post coming soon} and never have to worry about them drying out, not being on sale, etc.
2. Baby bathrobes and slippers ~ Buy some nice fluffy hooded towels for after the bath instead.
3. Baby bedding sets ~ There some cute ones out there, but you are not going to use that baby comforter and you will need more then one sheet. These sets are usually overpriced and you can find adorable custom sheets and crib skirts for much less. We’ll get to the bumpers a little later. But don’t forget to buy that waterproof mattress pad!
4. Bumbo ~ Everyone told me I had to have one of these. I love the idea behind it. It’s a little chair that baby can practice sitting in and then use with a tray later on for snacks. When our little girl tried one at 3 months, she was already too big for it. Her little legs were so pinched! I have heard that the Bumbo works well for skinnier, smaller babes so if you really have your heart set on a one, perhaps wait to buy it until after your little one is born, or keep the receipt just in case your little one is on the chubbier side! I do have an alternative for you. I have the Baby Snug from Mamas and Papas and it still fits my daughter perfectly {she is ten months now}, and it has a removable seat for younger infants so she can use it later on as a toddler as well. Two seats in one and it comes with the tray.
5. Stuffed animals ~ Not all stuffed animals, but ones that can only be spot cleaned and not machine washed.
6. Baby food makers ~ If you have a food processor that your well meaning Aunt bought you as a wedding gift, it does the same thing as a baby food maker in larger batches. It’s one less thing to pack away after baby grows up too.
7. Crib bumpers ~ I get it — they make your crib look adorable! But when you’re home from the hospital and are up most of the night hoping that your baby is still breathing, you don’t want to worry about bumpers. Thank you Canada for removing them from bedding sets!
8. Diaper pails ~ I use cloth diapers so this is not something that I felt I needed to invest in. However after using disposable diapers for the first little while and still using them overnight {and talking to many friends that have these cans}, I still think that you don’t need one. They are expensive garbage cans with expensive bags that go with them. Buy a good steel can with a lid that closes tight, then empty it regularly. Much cheaper and you don’t have to buy special bags.
So Mamas please share – what baby gear do you think new moms should skip?

Agree on pretty much all of it, though we do like our diaper pail. I’d even say skip the hooded towels. Just use the towels you have — baby gets dry either way!

…I don’t even know how to describe these things I got. They have padding and help an infant keep their head up. Didn’t ever use!

I love our diaper pail. And don’t think the refills are that expensive. I agree about the Bumbo. We got another kind that comes with a tray that spins around with toys. Then you can take out the infant insert and it becomes a booster seat for when she is older.

I also love our diaper pail. We cloth diaper as well, so we just use pail for overnight disposables and wipes, but it cut down on the smell in the nursery a lot. And yes to not machine washable stuffed animals- why would they even make those?

I loved my Beaba baby food maker, it was perfect for our lifestyle at the time, I made all meals fresh and didn’t have the space for a huge batch of stuff to freeze.

I love our wipes warmer. It’s one of my favorite items that is used all the time. LO has never complained about having a cool wipe used, but I like it for asthetic purposes. Is it a necessity, no, but I still love it.
We also love our diaper pail and our baby food maker. We have the beaba and have used it weekly since LO was 4 months old. LO is off purees but we still use it as a quick and easy steamer and used it just last night to cook up some broccolli for LO. Again, you could get by without it, but we love ours.
I agree that the Bumbo is not needed – we barely touched ours, and I painstakingly would have skipped the bedding set if I had to do it over.

Agree on everything! Although, I am guilty of getting an adorable bedding set and you’re right – that comforter is not getting used.

The only thing we have that we use on this list is the diaper pail. I agree it’s not a need, but we happened to already have one before LO came around that we used for something else.

I agree on everything except the pail. I love our pail.
As for towels – yes. Get regular bath towels! Once the baby gets a little older, get a nice, toddler sized hooded towel if you find one on sale. I found one at Kohl’s that was 60% off and used a 30% off coupon on it!

Love the diaper pail. We have the Dekor and actually use regular garbage bags for it. I think it locks the smell in pretty well so I’m happy with it and we don’t have the added expense of the bags. Those bags are confusing anyways.

I love my wipes warmer! I love our diaper pail! I LOVED our Bumbo! Of course these things aren’t NEEDS but they were definitely wonderful for our family to have!

I agree with all these except for the diaper [ail. Love my diaper pail, couldn’t live without it and the refills are not at all expensive.

Agree on all, except we loved our Bumbo :).

I love my wipe warmer..I have one for both kids.

I agree with all of these. I think most baby purchases are excessive. Some clothes, cloth diapers, a wrap (to wear baby), a crib and crib sheet (unless you are bedsharing) and a carseat. That is all I used for the first 6 months.

Oh and cloth wipes and a bouncer so I could shower (the fastest showers of my life!)

I LOVE our diaper pail! Seriously one of my favorite purchases.

i don’t have any of these and have not missed them. however when LO starts solids and his diapers get stinkier, we may need to upgrade the big trashcan we use as a diaper pail to a “real” diaper pail–or at least a nicer trashcan with a good seal.

Some baby things absolutely are not essential but still make life with kids a little easier every day… We have 2 diaper pails and definitely think they limit the stink. We used the wipes warmer for our first baby (never got around to inpacking it for our second) and it felt like it made things less uncomfortable for the first couple of months of chilly midnight diaper changes. And I LOVE our Béaba Baby Cook. Worth every penny!

I disagree about the diaper pail . . . we have an Ubbi and it is AWESOME. It doesn’t require special bags either.

I have the Mamas & Papas floor snug and I love it (so does my baby). It’s so much better than the bumbo, she can use it for much longer and the tray is included.
When I had my first baby someone bought me a diaper genie as a shower gift. I didn’t even know what it was and I grew to hate it. Eventually I just threw the whole thing in the trash, haha. Now I just keep a smallish trash can outside my apartment (it’s in a house and opens to the backyard) and the dirty diapers go in there right away.

pretty much agree on your entire list.
i also hated the moby.

Totally agree on every single thing!! We still invested in diaper pails, but with the knowledge that they’re disposable.
pomelo / 5321 posts
I agree with your entire list! We did end up with a Baby Bullet but we don’t have a food processor. It got the job done but I would’ve loved a food processor for bigger batches.
We also have the M&P Baby Snug. My LO is almost 22 months old and still fits in it with the insert! We love it. I’m always surprised to see people wanting the Bumbo for various reasons. The Baby Snug is so great!

Agree with all of it!
We didn’t get a crib bedding set – just a crib sheet was fine (we even got 2 crib sheets that came with the crib we got on Craigslist, so we didn’t even have to buy those!)
We also haven’t bought a single toy. Just a couple that we were gifted and already had lying around. She may or may not play with things like cups and towels

This is such a useful blog post! Thanks for your info!

I totally agree with everything to skip in this post! I wish I had read something like is about 17 months ago!

I agree, minus the diaper pail. I was going to just get a stainless steel trash can, but they were far more expensive than the Diaper Genie.
We made the bedding to avoid the bumper an comforter and get extra sheets. I’m so glad we did. I definitely stress too much about them breathing to worry about a bumper, too!

Agree with everything! Especially a diaper pail- just buy a regular garbage can! That way, you can use it after baby.
I did like my Beaba cook at first, but purees were short-lived in our house since we moved on to finger foods rather quickly. I would never buy one but it was gifted to us so we used it.

As a nanny and future mom, totally agree with all of these, except maybe the diaper pail. The one they had at my last job was definitely a total waste. The bags were expensive and it didn’t seal in smell at all. But I’ve used some good ones.
Worth noting also, I read an article recently that said bumbos are bad for baies. It messes up their posture. So bumbos are not only not all the useful, but also possibly detrimental. That said, one toddler I took care of loved using her old one with her dolls.

I have to disagree on the wipes warmer and diaper pail. We live in Denver where it’s cold about 9 months out of the year. If we didn’t have the wipes warmer LO would jolt with the cold touch. It’s so soothing to be cleaned with something warm.
I didn’t want a diaper pail to begin with but a friend of my husband bought it for us soon after birth. Thank gawd for this creation. It’s the interim solution until trash pick up on Mondays.

Cold 9 months out of the year in Denver? I live there too, and yeah, it’s definitely not.
Also, on the wipes warmer, I found that they cooled off in the time it took me to get them from the warmer to the butt. It just seemed like such a waste. And as long as the house is warm, why would they get freezing? (They never have anywhere I’ve worked.)
