We are all aware of the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, especially when it comes to our little ones. I never leave the house without sunscreen (for me and Baby Markers) and I try to keep her in the shade or covered up whenever possible. I keep a hat in the diaper bag just in case we stop to play at the park, and I try to be as diligent as possible when it comes to sun safety.

What I did not realize was that the same UV-A and UV-B rays that can burn her delicate skin can also burn her eyes. Just a few hours out in harsh sunlight can burn the outermost layer of the eye (called the cornea), and this can cause problems right from the start. Children are especially susceptible during their first 18 months, when the lens of their eyes are very thin, allowing more light to reach their retina.  The American Optometric Association reports that constant exposure to sunlight can cause cataracts or macular degeneration later in life, especially if it runs in your family.

We’re most concerned about sun damage during the summer, but the sun can be just as harsh in the colder months as well. Sunlight that bounces off of water, snow or ice is even stronger when reflected because it is intensified.

Studies show that up to 50% of lifetime UV exposure occurs before the age of 18. Our children naturally spend more time outdoors than adults, and since they are already more susceptible to damage, it’s important that their eyes are protected. I’m sure we’ve all seen our little ones scrunch up their face and turn their heads away when the sunlight hits them directly. I never leave the house without my sunglasses – why should Baby Markers be any different?

Mom! The sun! It’s too bright!

While the styles may be cute, it’s important that the sunglasses you choose for your baby have 100% UV protection from both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Poor quality sunglasses will actually cause your child’s pupils to dilate, which will allow in more light and cause more damage over time. Choosing a style that has a strap will help keep them on and be more comfortable on your child’s face. A wide-brimmed hat that is also UV-protectant will help block any rays that threaten to sneak in.

Here are some adorable styles that will also protect your little ones from the sun’s harsh rays:

1. Pottery Barn Kids /  2. Babiators / 3. Baby Banz / 4. iPlay Baby Flexi Specs / 5. OshKosh B’gosh / 6. Old Navy / 7.  Real Kids Shades / 8. Julpo
