Subscription boxes are all the rage right now and I too wanted to join in on the fun; after all who doesn’t love to receive a box full of surprise goodies in the mail? Thanks to a deal I read on the boards, I was able to sign Juliet up for a one month trial of a Citrus Lane box for half off.
The boxed arrived nicely packaged in my mailbox. There was a pink ribbon running around the box for Breast Care Awareness month (October), which I thought was a nice touch. On the back of the box there were also fun punch outs in the shape of pink mustaches in honor of men’s health awareness — cute concept and a wonderful cause to boot. I also read that the box was made through solar power, and eco-friendly which is always a plus in my book.
Upon opening the box there was a happy yellow card that gave a little summary about the products included, as well as a little about the companies.
In Juliet’s box we received:
Elephant Shaker from Green Tones- This toy is adorable. I actually think it might get stolen by Drake before Juliet ever gets a chance to play with i,t since she isn’t quite gripping toys yet and Drake loves animals and figurines. I love that it’s made of sustainable rubber wood and even the pellets inside are recyclable, which makes me worry less about Juliet mouthing it when she is older. I was unable to find this exact one on Amazon, but similar ones are sold for around $13.99 on average. I did find the elephant one on another site for $9 but I’m unsure about shipping costs as Amazon would be free with Prime. Overall I would say this is probably a $10 product give or take.
Dive Bath Appliques from Boon- Boon is a popular company in the baby world mostly know for their feeding utensils as well as their grass drying rack. These are basically bath appliques to place on the wall similar to the popular letter sets we have. I know that Drake is going to love and want these to to add to his collection, and I’m ok with that as one day Drake and Juliet will bathe together so a toy they can both play with is best. I like that they are BPA and PVC free. Amazon retails these to be $8.80.
Ez Grip Messaging Teether and Rattle from Innobaby- This is a product I am eager to test out on Juliet in the coming months. It’s a teether, but the shape of it allows for easy grasping and holding. The write up says that the teether was a big hit with their sample testers; it massages the gums as well as promotes natural jaw development, all of which sounds pretty good to me. We shall see how Juliet takes to this. I never did find a teether that Drake really loved, so I’m open to new products in this department to try. Amazon retails this at $5.99.
Gripe Water from Mommy Bliss- Most of the subscription boxes Ive seen have always included some kind of sample of food for baby to try and since Juliet at 4 months of age isnt really ready for real food I can see why this was included with our box. Gripe water is suppose to be a miracle potion for cranky tummies and fussy babies. I actually have never used it with either of my children, finding other methods to soothe, but it might be worth a shot since I have a sample now. Amazon retails this 4oz bottle at $6.80.
The total retail value of my box was approximately $31.59, which was over the box subscription of $25 and well over the amount I paid with the coupon code.
Overall I am happy with this experience. While the products included are not ones that I would have thought to purchase on my own, they’re all ones that I can see us using and enjoying. Cost-wise I made out with the coupon code, so that’s another plus. I did a quick google search and found several blog reviews of other subscribers with babies under a year and noticed that most of our boxes were similar with one being identical to mine. Even the ones that were different usually had one or two products that were the same. I also noticed Citrus Lane does stick with many of the same companies, Skip Hop, Boon,Charley Harper etc.
After looking at reviews from people who did longer subscriptions, I have come to a few conclusions:
- A lot of the boxes are going to be hit or miss, which I think is the most common complaint of many people. You might get one box that you really like (like I did for my first box) and be disappointed when you get another box later on that has products you don’t really like or care for.
-I liked some of the products I saw in other boxes, so I googled them like these little fish castanets. A quick search on Amazon pulled them up and since they price was good ($3.49 a piece), I ordered 2 — one for each of my kids.
-I do like how Citrus Lane seems to place mostly organic and eco-friendly toys and products in their boxes. Through them I have learned about new companies for all kinds of children’s things, and it saves me time doing the research on them.
So the big question is, would I order another month from them at full price?
Probably not. The various reviews I’ve read all seem to have one month or so of disappointment, and at $25 a month that’s not worth it to me for products I might never need or use. Even the products I do like are things I probably wouldn’t purchase on my own, so while they are neat and will be used, I could also easily live without them too. What I do like is that Citrus lane products seem to all be fun, eco-friendly/organic, and innovative. I think I’ll check up on reviews of boxes periodically and just buy the products I think I would like, thus allowing me to buy things I would definitely want and use and broadening my horizon about baby products.
Citrus Lane does have a referral program (you get $10 off for everyone who signs up with your link and they get $10 off their first box) as well as coupon codes like the one I used to get my box, so if those came into play I would be tempted to give it a go for another month or two. I think the general appeal of Citrus Lane, and other subscription boxes, is the fun of getting a surprise package in the mail, so with a reduced price I would be more inclined to order again since surprises and packages totally make my day.
Have you maintained any monthly subscription box services and been happy with them?
