I have this theory. I am not sure if I developed it out of necessity, for the sake of humor, or if one night William whispered into my ear as I drifted off while nursing him… BUT! It’s a theory and I shall share it with you.
Here it is: Every baby has a superpower.
Yes, it’s true! Every single little one is born with the ability to do at least one thing really, really well from infancy. One thing that we as parents usually obsess and fret over. Some ‘talent’ (X) that when we hear another parent mention it and how well their child is at X, we heave a great sigh and send a silent prayer that if only our baby could be great at X, life would be golden!
And it’s these – ‘talents’ we hope for and dream about – that are our baby’s superpower! Each little person has that one thing, that one talent that they excel at, and when we tell other parents about our baby’s love of or ability to do it, causes them to send their eyes upward to the heavens.
Superpower Diagnosis: Secretly a Teenager by Six Months Old (Smirks Included)
So great and such a great superpower! (My child does not have this power, for the record. Ha!)
My son though – he has the distinct ability to eat. He eats and gains weight and height like a champ. I am so thankful that I have never faced the scary words ‘failure to thrive’ and that I get to kiss little baby fat rolls each night. Superpower diagnosis: Eats-happily-and-well-from-day-one.
These superpowers are usually things that we not only usually take for granted (he just latched right on that boob right from birth!), but that others not-so-secretly covet (sweet goodness, if only he would nap!). There are lots of superpowers, and they evolve, I imagine, through the stages of our children’s life.
Here’s the list of baby superpowers I can think of currently:
- Can nap anywhere, anytime.
- Naps consistently: same time, same length, every day.
- Chills contentedly in the car seat.
- Happily entertains oneself with zero fussies.
- Poops like clockwork! You can set your watch by this dirty diaper.
- Loves people and doesn’t know stranger-danger.
- Natural breastfeeder.
- Loves those bottles and will take one any time, from anyone.
- Happily goes back and forth from boob to bottle. No nipple confusion here!
- Doesn’t even notice teething. Unfazed!
- Never gets sick!
- Gets sick but doesn’t affect temperament and/or sleep and/or life!
- Hits those developmental milestones early every darn time.
- Smiles all day, every day.
- Can self-soothe so well it’s like you’re not even needed.
- Just loves diaper changes. Loves them! Coos and chills while you get it done.
- Never spits up. You don’t even know the fear of a baby rolling to his tummy right after he ate, because, hey, your baby keeps that food DOWN!
- Took to solids like a pro.
- Cuddles with the best of them. (Secretly wish the snuggle superpower would be pretty awesome. Endless hugs and nuzzles? Yum.)
I just know there are more! What’s your baby’s superpower?

I LOVE this and have totally thought about it all the time. Love seeing it written in words. Cute post (and I am too tired to identify either of my babies super powers – clearly it isn’t sleep for either)

DS: Eats anything and everything and grows like a weed!
DD: Smiley and happy all day, everyday. She makes it seem almost okay that we are still waking up every few hours at 4.5 months old

Both my boys were good eaters as babies and grew so much (99%+ on the growth curve for weight and 75%+ for height). DS2 has now become a picky eater at 2.5. We’ll see how he does now!

LOL!! Love this post! My little one’s superpowers are not having nipple confusion as an infant (so thankful) and being able to party all night long. The latter sucks majorly for us. Ever read the article “how to sleep train your parents”? yea…. that was him.

this post is exactly what I needed this morning!! Thank you!
DS’s superpower is that he will take a bottle any time, from anyone, even cold directly out of the fridge. I had to tell daycare never to heat his bottles, out of fear that he might develop a preference for warmed bottles one day and we’d lose this superpower! His other is that he happily goes back and forth from boob to bottle. No nipple confusion here!
I hadn’t thought of either of these as superpowers, but now I totally agree with you, and I’m so proud of my little guy! Sure, I’d love for him to have some of those other ones on your list, but these two are pretty awesome.

Both LOs are just crazy eaters, they grow like weeds. Doubling their birth weight by 2 months, 95%+ in weight and length. Good for their health, bad for my back and (later) my grocery bill!

Love the post! My LO’s super power… he will take a bottle from anyone, cold or hot! But he’s also a pretty darn good sleeper so I don’t want to discount that either.
Naps on the other hand…. those are not his super power.

Great post (and I am so excited to see you blogging, you were always my favorite on WB : )! My baby’s super power is probably sleep. He does wake occasionally, but it’s not usually hard to get him back down (except that one time…).

@Mrs. Confetti: haha mama friend I feel you on the sleep! My guy woke up six times last Friday. Six! Worse than a newborn! Le sigh. Sending
and coffee.
@Mamasig: oh no! I worry my son’s eating superpower will dissipate with solids- we shall see! Good luck to you!
@bushelandapeck: the smiley baby is just the best. Cheers!
@Alivoo01: I just read that and died! Definitely my little guy too!
@MrsLonghorn: right? I think I thought of this so I could celebrate the good and get over how tired I am. Lol.
@keepcalmcarrie: oh man I hadn’t considered my future grocery bill if little guy keeps up his superpower! Thanks for the warning lol!
@psw27: those are great powers! My kid is such a nap resister. I think we got two in yesterday. Two! At six months old! Both shorter than an hour. I keep telling him: nap now! You’ll miss nap time in high school and adulthood! (College though- you get nap time back
)
@Mrs Green Grass: thank you! So kind! And go you with nap power! Woohoo! Love the quick caveat too- no jinxing yourself now!

I refuse to discuss this subject on account of jinxing it! LOL
Really, though, as much as I am a natural worrywort whenever something goes awry, Baby C is a decent sleeper (I wish she’d sleep more because she’s on the very low end of sleep averages, if she gets there at all, but she’s consistent, at least), and she’s been hitting those milestones like a rockstar, despite (maybe because of?) being a premie. And knock on wood, the few times that she’s been sick, it’s been fairly minor and hadn’t affected life in huge ways.

Such a cute post. My DH and I joke about this all the time in relation to our younger son who drools like there’s no tomorrow. His superpower is his ability to drool on anyone and anything so that he “slimes” all the toys and then has them all to himself (much to his brother’s chagrin). His other superpower is his ability to eat everything in sight and then lay some powerful poops (enough to clear a room).

This is so fun. My son had so many superpowers that we have joked that our next one (coming in about 3 more months!) will have none. We did have BF struggles and he did spit up. But besides that, you name it at least through infancy (some of this – particularly food – changed around 18 months…but he’s still a pretty chill and fuss-free 2 year old compared to others).
Slept through the night very early and consistently – check
Ate anything – check
Drank from a bottle whether warm or cold – check
Could nap anywhere and everywhere – check
Napped consistently and never fought them – check
Content to hang out and look around/entertain self – check
Happy in the carseat (replace carseat with bassinet, crib, boucy chair, swing, whatever) – check
Fine with diaper changes – check
Almost always happy or chill – check
Rarely got sick (and just smiled through it) – check
Rarely noticed teething until the tooth was totally out – check
Moral of the story. We are either so screwed with #2, or my son will be the worst teenager on the planet. We’re prepared to be punished for this

This is such a cute post! My daughter once she started sleeping through the night at 6 months has done pretty well being consistent (there are always the random cry in sleep almost daily but never wakes up. Although wakes me up
). And never had nipple confusion! I do covet #4 though: “Happily entertains oneself with zero fussies.” haha

Man he is a little heartbreaker! Cute post
K is Dr Dolittle, he retains so much info about animals!
D is just a little tank, nothing stops him or slows him down

This is so fun! My little guy is a great sleeper and napper. His superpower thrives on routine!

I’ve got a super smiley cuddler. Which in turn makes everyone love him, which I think is his true super power
. Daycare teachers are obsessed with him.

my baby has lots of super powers – cuddling, smiling, never spiting up, going from bottle to breast well, but SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT is definitely not one of them :’-(

I agree–and us parents have them, too.
Ellie: Bookworm extrordinaire. She loves any and all books and has the longest attention span ever when it comes to reading and listening. I read her “The Indian in the Cupboard” in its entirety (and then my voice gave out) and she just sat happily. She was also the easiest ever to transition to underwear. She was in them full time at 24 months and has only ever had about three accidents.
Lorelei: Language lover. She loves rhymes, singing, talking…she has always been very chatty and has a great vocabulary. I was totally shocked the other day when she asked me if deer were crepuscular. She’s also obsessed with animals and dinosaurs/fossils so she knows a crazy amount of information about them for someone not quite three.
Definitely a fun way to think about and celebrate our unique kids. Thanks for the reminder!
