I think the first show I ever binge watched was Sex and the City on dvd 10 years ago; I hadn’t even watched a single episode until it went off the air. This was way back when we actually watched tv shows and movies on dvd, and got red Netflix envelopes in the mail. Now with on demand streaming from Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, binge watching is a regular thing, and I think shows are actually much more enjoyable when you can watch them all at once.
Most moms have a lot of time to binge watch tv shows during maternity leave in between long nursing sessions and constantly holding your newborn. There are perennial critic and audience favorites like Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, etc. But when it comes to maternity leave, I think the best type of shows to watch are ones that are a little more light-hearted and a bit of a guilty pleasure. So these are the top 12 shows that are recommended by Hellobee community members over and over again to binge watch, as well as 88 other recommendations in drama, comedy, reality, and more!

I watch most shows after the season ends or when they go off the air because I love binge watching. So what am I currently watching?
Recently finished: Orange is the New Black, Suits, Unbreakable, Frankie and Grace
Currently watching: Frasier (old), Mistresses
Need to catch up on: The Good Wife, Downton Abbey, Orphan Black
Favorite new tv shows: iZombie, Brooklyn 99
Favorite guilty pleasure: Rupaul’s Drag Race and Naked and Afraid
Shows on my to-watch list: Parenthood, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Mad Men
Some off the beaten path shows/not included above I’d recommend: Better Off Ted, Episodes, Damages, and when we go old school, Golden Girls and The Nanny!
One of Mr. Bee’s favorite shows is Bored to Death, but he’s a little biased since it’s filmed in Brooklyn.
. . . . .
I know there are so many great shows out there, and I could have easily made this list much longer, but I included the most common recommendations from Hellobee users.
What did you watch on maternity leave? What other shows would you add to this list… particularly ones that might not be as well known?

Um, love this. Not on maternity leave but I love binge watching new shows! I am about to start a new Couch to 5K too and want to watch while I walk/jog/run!

Maybe I just missed it but I don’t see Downton Abbey? (I see it on your catch-up list though.) LOVE that show. I am a couple seasons behind and saving it for mat leave. I recently watched Catastrophe on amazon prime, it is a british romantic comedy and it was pretty funny. Not awesome but short episodes and light, humor is a little vulgar but not excessively so. Only one season so far with 6 episodes but they are working on a second.

Thanks for the list! Bookmarking it.
Has anyone watched Call the Midwife? What’s it like?

DS is four weeks and I was just considering my next binge show. This is a great list. I like light hearted shows that you don’t need to watch too closely since I’d really prefer to nod off when possible.

Love this. I binged Hart of Dixie, Reign, Scandal, and Suits during my last maternity leave.
A show I’d add is Rookie Blue (currently airing season 6).
And for Sci-Fi shows, I’d add Firefly (14 episodes total), Farscape (4 seasons + miniseries), Babylon 5 (5 seasons + movies), and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (7 seasons).

@wrkbrk: Call the Midwife is so wonderful. It is a period piece and the sets and costuming is great. The acting is really good and the writing and meaningful and uplifting. I am not usually a BBC person but this show knocks it out of the park.

I love TV, and now the only way I watch it now is one or two shows at a time, from the beginning to end.

I binged on Friday Night Lights and Hart of Dixie. I started Call the Midwife but it disappeared off of netflix… anyone know of a free way to watch it?!

Love this!!! I loved Parenthood so, so much…and I binge watched Scandal seasons 1-3 last year. Currently, we’re enjoying Flash, but we can only watch it on the CW.com once a week.

I’ve been binging on the Hills and the City. They require no brainpower to watch and are perfect for those late night feedings when I am half-awake.

Gilmore Girls, Parenthood, Friday Night Lights = YES.
Someone on HB recommended Parenthood to me after I finished Gilmore Girls (for the second time) SO GOOD!

Starting maternity leave in a week and a half….great timing on this list
My personal favorite is Breaking Bad….I would vote this as one of my favorite of all time! Also, don’t think it was listed but Lost was great too!

Love this! I’m not on maternity leave, but we just cut the cord so I’ve been looking for TV to binge stream.

I saved season 2 of House of Cards for my maternity leave, and then season 2 of Orange is the New Black was released while I was on maternity leave.
I also binged watched The Good Wife on Hulu, and late night, I would watch Psych because it was OK if I fell asleep during it.

Love this list! I binged watch Glee and Gossip Girl when DD was a newborn.

I watched a ton of hgtv when I was on maternity leave. And to echo everyone else, you really do need to watch parenthood.

Ha, I love this! I’ve blown through half of these shows already. In fact, I’m watching Grey’s Anatomy right now

Rules of Engagement- hilarious, light and quick to get through. No longer on air, but I binge watched it and it was great!

Haha love this!!! I binge watched Greys anatomy and 90210 (don’t see that one here- it’s on Netflix) when my son was little. I re watched gossip girl and Gilmore girls. Oh and Biggest Loser haha- inspired me to lose the baby weight

The Comeback with Lisa Kudrow is AMAZING! Love Call the Midwife as well, such a great show! I’m currently watching Getting On on HBO GO and also just finished Silicon Valley on HBO GO. I also watched The Fall recently on Netflix, it was good, very dark though. Also Girls on HBO is a fun one to watch too.
Friends is my go to, I own all the season and still turn it on every time its on TV.
Favorite HGTV show, Fixer Upper! I have about 20 of them DVRed for when I’m on leave!

My favorite during Maternity leave was IT Crowd and Sherlock. I also went on a Big Bang Theory and Elementary binge as well.

We’re watching House of Cards a few times a week right now.
I put on House Hunters, Flip or Flop, and my absolute FAVORITE: Fixer Upper when I work late at night.
My other current favorite is Unreal. I’ll happily watch any Modern Family and need to restart Gilmore Girls.

I know this is old, but I’m looking for new ideas. Great list!
I would also add The Following and Broadchurch, if you like dark/thriller/murder mystery type shows.
Also a great funny/silly/mindless watch is Happy Endings. I binged that and laughed almost nonstop (similar humor to New Girl). Unfortunately the show was cancelled abruptly after I think 3 seasons. So it drops off midseason. But its really great and its not like its a real “storyline” that you get sucked into, so it doesn’t matter too much that it ended the way it did.
On mat leave I binged Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black, Parenthood, and The Affair. I think Parenthood is my all time favorite. But its so hard to say that because there are so many good ones.

Great List!!! The only shows in my opinion you are missing are Stranger Things and WENTWORTH!!!! Best drama show ever!!!

A great list, but would add: “The Tudors”. I too loved “Call the Midwife”. Generally, anything from the BBC is excellent! Can find on Netflix.
