We’re headed to a bunch of birthday parties this summer, and with Little Oats’ own second birthday just around the corner, I thought I’d share some of her favourite things. Maybe this will help you pull together some gift ideas (or inspire you to dig some items out of storage).

A-2-Year-Olds-Favorite-Things

1) MegaBloks: We’re finally getting to the stage where Little Oats wants to build ‘things’ (usually the UmiCar from Team UmiZoomi), and MegaBloks has so many different kits. We have the standard ‘First Builders’ kit, but also the tea party add-on.

2) Play kitchen: This was a Christmas gift when Little Oats was 16 months old, but she is really getting into it now. Pancakes, pie and tea are her favourite things to make us. The fact that the buttons all make noise is an added bonus.

3) Water table: We bought this water table for Little Oats’ early birthday present, and it’s a hit. Really, you can’t go wrong with any of the water tables on the market; they can be reasonably priced, and are long lasting. The age range for this table in particular is 2-6; I’m sure it will last for ages.

4) Forts/Tents: We have a fire-truck pop up tent, and another small tent from Ikea. Both are a ton of fun, and also do double duty as a sun-shade in the backyard. Bonus points if the fabric is UV protected.

5) Books: We love anything with textures, real pictures, silly words, and repetition. Rhymocerous and Hippopposites are two that we’ve recently discovered. They don’t have much of a plot, but the shapes, colours, textures and words are great.

6) Paint with water: This is something new that I’m waiting to try with Little Oats. I’ve stocked up on these books from Amazon – I think it will be a great distraction once the new baby comes. But given how much she loves painting, and Elmo, I think they’ll be a hit!

7) Colouring books: Sure, two-year-olds aren’t colouring in the lines yet, but fun pictures are a great alternative to scribbling on blank pieces of paper. They’re cheap, easy to find, and provide hours of entertainment.

8) Stickers: Whether they’re stuck into a book, on a piece of paper, or on Little Oats’ belly, we LOVE stickers! Melissa and Doug make great sticker books, and the stickers are repositionable, so you don’t have to deal with a sobbing toddler who ripped their sticker in half.
