I’m now approximately 10 weeks pregnant (yay!), and I’ve been dealing with symptoms of morning sickness for a little over four weeks now (blerg). I don’t remember it being as rough when I was pregnant with Little Cotton Candy, but I’m partially blaming that on a.) not having an energetic four-year-old who needs constant attention and b.) the power of the mind to block out the ickiest parts of pregnancy. Either way, I’m struggling, but I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The first couple weeks were spent eating mostly fast food because that is all I could stomach. That was not good for my health or my wallet, so I’ve tried to come up with a repository of healthier meals that involve minimal prep (because cooking smells are the WORST). Here’s what I’ve been eating over the past few weeks.

1) Greek yogurt with fruit & granola. Why is it good for you? Greek yogurt is a calcium and protein goldmine. Add some fresh fruit, granola, and honey, and it’s also a delicious and simple snack or breakfast that doesn’t trigger my gag reflex.

2) Frozen bean burritos. Amy’s makes some delish ones, but my grocery store also carries some cheaper brands that are more wallet-friendly. Why are they good for you? Beans fill your tummy and contain lots of protein. The cheese has calcium, and my doctor told me it’s important to get enough of this nutrient during pregnancy. Finally, the tortilla may not be nutritionally amazing, but carbs are great for calming my nausea.

3) Ramen noodles. Yes, the 10-cents-a-pack ones you lived on in college. Why are they good for you? Okay, strictly speaking, they’re not, but the broth and noodles fill the tummy nicely, and their simple flavors are easy on the digestive system. If you’re watching your sodium intake, go easy on the flavor packet. I try to add a big helping of fresh fruit or baby carrots to ensure I get some essential vitamins and minerals as well.

4) Turkey taco salad. This is a favorite meal in our house, and luckily it involves minimal cooking. My husband browns the meat and adds homemade taco seasoning, then combines the meat with fresh corn and a can of black beans. Why is it good for you? The protein from the beans and turkey is great, and it gives me a way to eat vegetables that is more palatable. (I’m having a strong food aversion to cooked veggies.)
5) Hummus. I make it myself because I can control the ingredients. I just combine a can of garbanzo beans with a couple tablespoons of tahini, a ton of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and a hit of salt. (Normally I would include garlic, but that’s another current aversion.) Why is it good for you? Again, protein from the beans is a plus, and it also gives me an incentive to eat some fresh carrots and bell peppers.

6) Super plain cereals. Even though I’m craving all things sugar, sugary cereals make me gag. I stocked up on cereals with little to no sugar like Cheerios, Shredded Wheat, and Grape Nuts Flakes. Why are they good for you? All of these cereals are made from whole grains, which are more filling and nutritious than processed grains, and they are the perfect place to squeeze in some extra milk and fruit, which is a good combo to start the AM with.

7) Veggie burgers. Specifically the black bean variety. I cook these on the stove versus in the microwave so they have a better texture. I also add a combo of ketchup + sriracha for a yummy topping. Add some pickles on the side, and it’s enough to get me through lunchtime. Why are they good for you? Protein, duh.

Unfortunately, the way my aversions are going, just when I find something I can stomach and stock up on it, I develop a new aversion to it. This happened with tater tots and frozen biscuits, and I’m worried it’s happening with the burritos now. The good news is, since I switched up my diet in an attempt to eat healthier foods, I stopped gaining weight as rapidly. (Bonus: My budget is back in control.) Some other tips for nausea I have heard that are helping are taking a vitamin B6 supplement, sniffing cut lemons, brushing my teeth frequently, eating mints, and putting some peppermint essential oil directly under my nose.

I know I’ve already asked this, but what your favorite healthy morning sickness–friendly snacks? Those of you in the first trimester suffering through morning sickness with me—hang in there!
