I’ve been a fan of NYX Cosmetics for years, particularly their eyeshadows and lip glosses. I also love that the company was started by a 25 year old Korean-American female, and sold for $500 million to L’Oreal in 2014! When I visited America last month for the first time in 2 years, I had run out of most of my makeup. Realizing that a trip to Sephora to restock everything at once would be very costly, I was glad to find a NYX store which has high quality makeup at drugstore prices. I restocked almost my entire makeup kit there and now that I’ve had a month to use everything I purchased, here’s how NYX products stacked up to some higher end lines.
The two are very similar in texture and both come with an attached spoolie brush. I use Soft Brown in Anastasia and Ash Brown in NYX, and the Soft Brown is slighty lighter in color, which I prefer. Since I had my eyebrows microbladed two years ago (need to get them redone now!), I use very little brow pencil and it lasts me a long time so I’m not too price sensitive on brow products. But if you use your brow pencil heavily, both of these lines don’t have very much product in them so NYX’s version is a more affordable dupe that is very close to Anastasia’s.
Liquid eyeliner is very important to me and Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner has been my favorite for years, with Stila’s All Day Waterproof Liquid Liner ($22) coming in second. I like to replace my liquid eyeliners and mascaras often (every 3 months), so it can get very expensive! NYX’s version is a total dupe for Kat Von D’s with a very similar brush, and at $8 a pop, I’m a convert.
I’ve tried many popular concealers including NARS and Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat ($42), but my Holy Grail concealer for years has been Cle de Peau. At $70 it’s an investment but seriously lasts forever, is easy to apply, and has the best coverage. Since I don’t wear foundation and dark spots under my eyes are one of my biggest problem areas, concealer is definitely an area where I’m willing to splurge, especially because I live in tropical weather and Cle de Peau’s concealer has SPF 25. The NYX version is a good dupe for NARS at a fraction of the price, but in general I’m not a big fan of wand concealers because I think you need to use a brush to get the best coverage, and I’m lazy to do a second step!
I love me some highlighter and really wanted to try Becca’s highlighters ($38) since I go through a lot of it. But then I thought about minimizing my makeup bag when traveling and picked up NYX’s Prismatic Eyeshadow in Golden Peach to use as a highlighter. It’s a lovely color and a great addition to my makeup kit. I loved my Hourglass Highlighter, but was looking for a more affordable replacement.
I love my Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette — the color variety, the pigmentation, how long it lasts. But I travel a lot and wanted something smaller to carry with me, so I picked out 4 similar NYX colors to my favorite colors in the Naked Palette. I’ve been using NYX shadows for years and they really are high quality for the price, very similar to MAC.
I own many MAC lip pencils, but do not particularly love any of them. I picked up NYX’s Suede Matte Lipliner in Soft Spoken (nude) and the Slim Lip Pencil in Bloom (bright pink) and really like both. With tons of colors and a nice creamy texture, I’ll definitely be buying more of NYX’s lipliners. Lipliners are definitely one area where I don’t need to splurge.
I love MAC lipsticks and have been using them since high school. NYX’s version is a great dupe and goes on just as velvety smooth. At only $6/each, you can experiment with a wide range of colors.
There’s a reason NARS’ cult blush in Orgasm is so popular. It’s the perfect shade of pink with just enough shimmer. I’ve tried many other blushes including NYX’s Rose Gold, which is quite lovely, but keep coming back to NARS and haven’t found anything I like nearly as much.
