Like most babies, Charlie has always loved books. He’d sit quietly in our laps when we’d read to him as a baby, turn the pages when he could control his hands better, eat the books when he started teething, and finally point out and recognize the pictures once he could talk. Reading three board books before Charlie’s naps became a daily routine for us once Charlie was about 4 months old, so we’ve read each of these books many times over. (A board book differs from a traditional book in that it has thick pages that are sturdy and easy for babies to turn.)
Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? (perhaps our all-time favorite), Chugga Chugga Choo Choo, Doggies, The Monster at the End of this Book and Jamberry are just plain fun to read. There’s no reason parents shouldn’t enjoy reading children’s books too! Charlie loves interactive books, and his all time favorite book is Tails because of all the different pulls and tabs inside. How Big? and Where is Baby’s Belly Button? also have flaps you can lift up, and Charlie likes that both books have pictures of babies. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a classic that’s fun to read, but is also fun for babies because it has holes that Charlie loves to stick his little fingers inside. Little Puppy is a finger puppet book that Charlie loved from a very early age, and is available in a bunch of different animals. Meow makes a meow sound when you press a button — Charlie still loves to press that button to this day. Finally I Love You, Stinky Face is a wonderfully written, sweet book about a mother’s love for her child.
What are some of your child’s favorite board books?

My son didn’t really care for books until he was over a year and a half. I love reading, so I despaired because until then he didn’t get into story time. Now he loves books and will sit quietly with a book. His favorites are Sandra Boynton’s “Moo, Baa, La La La,” “Hippos Go Beserk,” and “The Going to Bed Book.” He also loves “Peek-a Who?” and “Ready, Set, Go!” by Nina Laden. He didn’t care for many of the more popular books (Goodnight Moon, Eric Carlyle’s books). My advice would be to go to the library and check out a bunch of books until you find ones that he likes and then get those.
