Assuming that you’ve saved most of the baby essentials from your first child, these are the things you might want to prepare for your second child. Since Olive was getting her own room, we had to buy a new crib, dresser, glider, bookcase, etc. for her nursery. I also needed baby bottles, nursing pads, milk storage bags, and pump parts right away, but didn’t have them prepared since Olive decided to arrive so early. Thanks goodness for Diapers.com and their free overnight delivery! Had I known that I was going to have a VBAC, I also would have prepared all the pain relief items beforehand as well.
Of course everyone’s needs are going to be a little different, but I think this is a good general starting point. What did you need to buy for your second child?

My shopping list is almost the same but as my DD has outgrown her crib, I am reusing it. I may have to buy another one later ‘cos I’m expecting twins. Essentials like bottles, nipples, diapers etc plus extra bottles drying rack, bottle brush. Toiletries like shower cream, baby shampoo, moisturizer, diaper rash cream etc., New nursing bras!
Some extras for twins –
– another infant car seat
– a double stroller frame to fit two infant car seats
– crib divider
– changing mat
– portable diaper pod (changing pad in clutch to hold extra diapers & diaper rash cream)
– baby monitor

My second is due in January, almost exactly 2 years after my first…
We’re reusing everything from our first (a girl) for our second baby (a boy) except clothing (some of the itty bitty stuff is gender neutral so we’re able to use it for him as well).
We have bought:
–clothing in sizes 0-3, 3-6, and 6-9 (consigned my little girl’s baby clothes in a local Just Between Friends sale and bought the clothing I needed for my little boy at the same sale, so basically my sales paid for my purchases)! Also got socks, booties and caps.
–Some decorative art for the walls in the nursery (DD will stay in the crib/nursery until DS is about 6-8 months old…we’ll be bedsharing until then…then I’ll transition DD to her “big sister room” and DS will go into the nursery/crib.)
–Since DS will be in our room and DD is still in diapers (we’ll work on potty learning soon) we got an additional changing pad for our room (will either get a changing station or repurpose a short shelf we already own).
–Some new diaper covers (we CD our first and bought mostly gender-neutral covers, but some are more girlie so I’ve picked up some new ones for DS).
Everything else we have…carseat (DD’s infant carseat now that she’s in a convertible), Snap n Go stroller, Moby and Ergo carriers, breast pump, bottles, high chair, swing, bouncy seat, Jumperoo, toys, etc.
I’ll probably get DS some of his own board books and baby toys since DS is pretty attached to hers and they’ve been “well loved” but all-in-all I think we’re pretty set for DS’s arrival!

Since BebeDeux is the same sex as Claire, and because she will not have her own room, our shopping list was very small:
-spare breast pump accessories
-new nursing supplies such as pads and lanolin
-diapers
-gripe water
-an additional seat to add to our stroller
And that’s it. We still have all of Claire’s old stuff (including a bassinet and infant carseat) which will be re-used. And since we do not have room for another crib, we will be using a Pack-n-Play, which a friend gave to us after just using it once.
I feel a bit bad that BebeDeux will mostly get old stuff, but we would rather save the money for the future….besides, I’m sure she would appreciate the extra money when she is old enough to pick and choose her own stuff!
