I’m a huge fan of sleep sacks, or wearable blankets, because I don’t have to worry about Charlie kicking off his blankets and getting cold in the middle of the night (I’m still obsessed with whether he’s hot or cold). As a first time mom, I was also paranoid about SIDS, s0 I was comforted knowing that Charlie wouldn’t be able to get a sleep sack stuck over his face. Charlie has been wearing Halo Sleep Sacks since he was 4 1/2 months old, and at 22 months, he still wears them daily! But with the fall chill in the air, I was in the market for a couple of warmer sleep sacks…
1) Baby DeeDee Sleep Nest ($39) – This sleep sack seemed much warmer than the Halo Sleep Sacks we’d been using. I like the buttons on top which make putting this sleep sack on easy, but my only hesitation in purchasing it was that some of the reviews said the bottom was narrow.
2) Aden & Anais Four Layer Sleeping Bag ($45) – I’m a big fan of their muslin swaddle blankets, and a friend of mine loves these sleeping bags that are made of 100% breathable cotton. Great for summer, but probably not warm enough for winter.
3) Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag ($120) – This is the priciest option in our guide, but I love that it’s made of all natural merino wool that’s warm yet breathable. I recently purchased the toddler size and it runs huge! I prefer a snugger fit so I’m going to exchange it for the baby size.
4) Halo Sleep Sack ($20) – We’ve gone through tons of cotton and fleece sleep sacks just because they’re the most popular and affordable, but I knew there were better options out there. I like that the cotton sleep sacks are thin for the summer, but the fleece sleep sacks just aren’t warm enough for New York winters.
5) Grobag ($50) – Grobags come from the UK and are available in two different togs, or thicknessess. I purchased a 2.5 tog Grobag, which is the thicker one for colder temperatures. For the recent cold nights, we’ve been putting Charlie in pjs and his grobag, and I think it’s keeping him nice and warm.
Does your LO sleep in a sleep sack? Which sleep sack do you love?

Does Charlie roll around in his sleep? My LO likes to sleep on her belly and she moves around a ton in her sleep. I’ve thought about getting a sleep sack, but was afraid she wouldn’t be able to move if I put her in one.
We just dress her in long sleeves, keep her room at a comfortable temperature and let her sleep w/o a blanket. Going to have to figure something else out for winter though.

I also wondered the same thing, my daughter moves around A LOT at night. Maybe this is bad, but I put her in footie pajamas give her a blanket to sleep with. Though it is ever rarely on her when I check up on her!

Oh, I should add that she is 13 months, so I’m not worried about her getting tangled up in it.

I am also curious about this. I have a 13 month old that we put a light blanket on her. Can he move around or stand up with a sleepsack? I am also paranoid about her being too hot or cold…

charlie moves around a lot, and he can definitely move fine in his sleep sack. he can stand in it, and walk in it too. he loves his sleep sack and grabs it and says nap when he’s tired.

Yes there is plenty of movement capabilities with the Halo sleep sacks at least. The bottom is very roomy so their legs are not inhibited. My LO can stand and walk around her crib with it on but she can’t climb out so that’s why I like sleep sacks, plus they keep her warm all night of course.

@bee and @andreaon thank you!! gonna buy one now!

@andreaon – ah interesting point about not being able to climb out. i know a lot of babies younger than charlie that have been able to climb out of their cribs. perhaps his sleep sack is keeping him in his crib because he is definitely a climber! i want to keep him in his crib as long as possible, so that’s a definite plus!

We’ve been using the Aden & Anais four layer ones non-stop after Max outgrew the Miracle blanket. He had bad ezcema so the Halo fleece ones weren’t breathable enough for his skin. They’re warm enough for the LA nights and allow him to move around a lot but do make it harder for him to climb out of the crib.

We use the Halo Toddler Sleep Sack which has openings for your little one’s feet so he/she can be completely mobile. We love it for our 22 month old.

My LO just started to use his fleece Halo sleep sacks, and he has adjusted quite well. It keeps him warm, and he is still able to move around. I will look into the Aden & Anais sleep sacks for the warmer months.

We used Halo (both cotton and fleece) from newborn to about maybe around 18-20 months and then I got him some Aden + Anais ones (both single and 4 layer ones) and I absolutely LOVE these. They run big so at 30 months my son can still use the XL (18-24 months) and move and walk comfortably around in them in his crib. He loves them too. I did, however, have to sew up the sleeve for the single layer one in the summer time b/c he was escaping out of it. But he has since forgotten (I think!) how to escape out of it so I didn’t bother with the 4 layer one. Although, I’ve been putting a child-proof safety pin on the inside bottom right above the zipper so he doesn’t remove them all the time. Since he usually plays around after waking up and never really makes any sound (initially), it was really to prevent him from getting cold when we don’t know that he’s up. Works like a charm! Oh, and he has sweaty feet so since these are more breathable I’m guessing they help with that too!

Hmm…I meant sew up the sleeve hole so it’s not so big.

loved the sleep sacks when my LO was younger. My favorite were the Grobags. The Aden & Anais armholes were a bit too big for me. IKEA does sleep sacks as well. Unfortunately, my son has outgrown his sleep sacks and hates being covered with a blanket – I just dress him warmer when it’s cold out.

i’ve been using halo sleepsack’s for summer but now that it’s cooling down i have been looking for something warmer. i’ve never heard of a lot of these!!
omg reading the reviews on the merino sleep sacks sound amazing… i think i’m gonna take the plunge and splurge bc most reviewers say it’s really only a one time purchase rather than purchasing multiple sacks for different sizes and different seasons. the girly pink one is cheaper at $99 on amazon if you’re ok with letting charlie wear pink. hehe

I bought a Baby Dee Dee for my LO and I LOVE it! It keeps her nice and toasty and she can move around freely. Thanks for the rec!

I never used sleep sacks for my first DD, but my 2nd is doing well with them! We’re using the Lullabag by Cloud B and think it’s great!

How old should you baby be when he moves into the sleep sack?

Great post! We use baby deedee sleep sack, both quilted and jersey version. Extremely happy and both my sons just loved it so much, it’s a part of their bedtime routine. I’m yet to find them cold or sweaty. Great buy!!
MRSMED: I’ve switched to sleep sack post 8 weeks and transition was really smooth
