When I was pregnant with Charlie, I put off buying maternity clothes for as long as possible because I didn’t want to spend money on clothes I was going to wear for such a short time. I was able to get by just wearing loose dresses all summer. Then came fall and I found myself in dire need of clothes that fit! In retrospect, I should have bought at least a couple of key pieces sooner to get the most wear out of them, especially since I could have saved them for my second pregnancy.
Fabulous pieces from the new Hatch Collection maternity line.
To help you get a kickstart on planning your maternity wardrobe, we’ve compiled links to some of the best places to buy maternity clothes below!
I’ve shopped at most of these stores throughout my pregnancies with Charlie and Olive. Gap, Old Navy and Target are great for basics, and Loft is great for affordable work attire. Asos and Topshop are a little slow when it comes to shipping, but they usually have a nice selection of dresses. Isabella Oliver, Rosie Pope and Hatch are all a bit higher end, but they carry pretty dresses for special occasions. You can find great deals at Destination Maternity and Motherhood Maternity, sister sites that also carry the A Pea in the Pod line. Ingrid and Isabel created the famous belly band which allow you to wear your regular pants longer. Zappos actually has a pretty big selection of maternity wear, and of course they have one of the best shipping and returns policy around. Belly Dance Maternity is a cute little boutique that I used to frequent that carries a variety of popular maternity lines.
Where were your favorite places to buy maternity clothes? Are there any stores you think we should add to this list?

A lot of these stores are not available in Canada, nor do they ship here. So sad. I feel we lack style when it comes to maternity clothes! (as in the selection)
I love hatch, but would never buy a 400$ maternity jacket or dress.

I bought a few good items from Nordstrom, but I always felt so frumpy when pregnant that I didn’t bother looking for nice or stylish things.

Great list, I’ll have to check some of these out. One place I’ve had good luck has been H&M. Their Mama line is very cute and affordable. There isn’t a huge selection but you can get some basic layering t-shirts and some cozy sweaters without breaking the bank!

I agree with you Bee about the great basics at Gap and Old Navy! Love Old Navy’s maternity leggings for $10.
Anyone ever purchase maternity tights? I’m having a hard time finding a decent pair.

Most of my maternity clothes came from a mom who was done having kids. I bought a few things when there was a big sale at Old Navy and when the Ross near me still had maternity clothes.

@eugy – i purchased 2 pairs of maternity tights from a pea in the pod. actually i bought them from destination maternity but it was a pea in the pod brand. i lived in them in my third trimester with charlie, and after having him. and i still live in them now! maternity tights are a definite must!

I used a larger size of H&M tights instead of maternity tights. They were long enough and large enough all the way through my pregnancy and at the end I just tossed them.
I personally don’t like leggings, I bought one pair and looked ridiculous.

@Bee -Thanks for the rec! I’m going to a wedding Friday night and desperately need pair since the weather is so chilly now! Will check out Destination Maternity/Pea in the Pod this week.

Oh wow….Zappos has maternity clothes. I’m gonna check them out. Does anybody have any recs for a winter coat? It seems like such a waste to get one at this pt since I’m due in Jan (most likely Dec cuz I’m having twins) but I I’d rather not wear my husbands. Haha. I wanna look somewhat nice.

Love the hatch dresses! I regret not looking cuter when I was preggers, but I didn’t wanna spend money on clothes I would only wear for a short period of time. :T

http://www.momplusbaby.com – it’s an eBay store run by a mom herself. She ships internationally and customer service is really good.

Please check out ShopBubbleBelly.com if you love designer jeans but can’t find them in maternity styles (or don’t want to pay the higher prices of other dept. stores or boutiques). The selection is unique and we pride ourselves with our top notch customer service and that’s why I started the business. Before I was preggers with my first baby, I lived in designer jeans but as my belly grew, I could not find the lines I liked and the other stores were charging even more for the same lines I already wore just because they were maternity jeans. So I went off and converted the waist bands. We also offer to ship you the original waist bands so you can convert them back to regular jeans when you’re no longer pregnant or you can keep the maternity pair for the next baby…and the next…and the next. ;P It’s a small investment for a great pair of premium jeans that will last you a while and I started the store so I could share this with my preggers friends and mommies everywhere! ShopBubbleBelly.com is a small, mommy owned and run boutique. I do everything and will be the one to answer all your questions and package up your order as well. We also offer a well-edited selection of unique items for babies and toddlers. We know there are many choices out there. Even if you don’t find exactly what you need, we would love your feedback.

Forever 21 has maternity clothes now, too! Fun, trendy pieces that won’t break the bank.

I found some cute dresses at Nordstrom and Boden also has a very cute maternity line! Otherwise, I totally agree with Gap, Target, and Old Navy. I got alot of affordable stuff there.

Although the collections were great, I found a lot of these stores very expensive. So I tried Morphmaternity and I was amazed. Not only do they have a great collection, the prices are really affordable too!

I didn’t know Zappos and ASOS carried maternity!
I’m very small, so I find my options are somewhat limited. If I want to find my size on a SAHM-budget, I pretty much stick with Target and Old Navy. It’s good to have other options when looking for something special, though! Target even has affordable winter coats! (Hint: Set up a baby registry there first, THEN shop for your coat. The packet they give you for setting up a registry usually has a pretty good coupon in it.)
I have also found that, depending on the current prevailing styles, sometimes non-maternity pieces are perfect. Stretchy waistbands, low-slung pants, and empire-waist and/or babydoll tops/dresses have all been great.

Walmart.com also has a basic selection of maternity clothes that are very inexpensive.

I wish I had started my business sooner – you would have looked awesome in an outie tee. x
