I put off buying maternity clothes as long as possible when I was pregnant with Charlie, only to go out and buy a bunch of clothes around my seventh month when nothing fit anymore. I definitely recommend buying maternity clothes earlier in your pregnancy so you get the most wear out of them. Luckily many of the items I purchased like maxi dresses and wrap sweaters have had a long life post pregnancy.
This is our guide to the top 15 maternity clothing essentials!
1) tank top, 2) tunic, 3) yoga pants, 4) maxi dress, 5) leggings, 6) wrap sweater, 7) jeans
8) ballet flat, 9) pea coat, 10) belly band, 11) underwear, 12) sleep bra, 13) cardigan, 14) black pants, 15) side ruched tee
1) maternity tanks – I lived in maternity tanks throughout both my pregnancies. I was able to wear the longer style tanks from Gap (which you see me wearing in my belly shot pics) instead of buying maternity tanks.
2) tunics – Tunics provide lots of room for your growing belly. I wore some of my nonmaternity tunics up until I had Olive! Ones that tie or wrap under your chest can be especially flattering for your belly.
3) yoga pants – Yoga pants are comfortable but still look put together.
4) maxi dresses – Maxi dresses were my single biggest maternity clothing purchase because I’m a dress girl, and I still wear all the dresses after having the baby. Empire waist and wrap dresses are also very flattering.
5) leggings – I loved, loved, loved my maternity leggings with the fabric panel that goes over your stomach, and wore them long after I gave birth. They were my comfiest pants to lounge around the house (especially after a c section), but they were also easy to dress up with boots!
6) wrap sweater – I purchased three maternity wrap sweaters throughout both my pregnancies, and continue to wear them long after having the baby.
7) jeans – Designer maternity jeans are just as, if not pricier than regular jeans, but I was able to purchase them for a fraction of the cost at a maternity consignment store. You can’t get through your pregnancy without a nice pair of jeans.
8) ballet flats – I used to be a 4 inch heels kind of gal, but I couldn’t wear heels while I was pregnant. Now I’ve become a ballet flat kind of girl!
9) winter coat – If you’ll be in your third trimester and live in a cold climate, a maternity coat is a must. Buying a coat in a larger size just won’t do because the proportions will be off. I made that mistake when I needed a maternity coat last minute and wasn’t able to find one.
10) belly band – These stretchy fabric bands enable you to get longer wear out of your regular clothes. One trick that I often used as well was to loop a hair elastic through the button hole of my pants or skirt and fasten it onto the button. A cheap, easy, diy waistband lengthener!
11) underwear – You don’t need to purchase maternity underwear, but you probably will have to purchase underwear in a larger size. Gap’s cotton underwear are my favorite. They usually have a better selection in the stores than they do online.
12) maternity/nursing bras – You’re going to want to purchase comfortable bras in larger sizes for your growing breasts throughout pregnancy and when you’re nursing. I wore a nursing sleep bra every single day until I weaned Charlie.
13) cardigan – I was hot, hot, hot while I was pregnant and a long, loose maternity cardigan provided just the right amount of layering I needed.
14) black pants – If you work in an office, a pair of black maternity pants is a closet staple.
15) side ruched tee – I purchased a side ruched long sleeve tee from A Pea in the Pod and wore it throughout my third trimester of both pregnancies. They’re super comfy and super flattering!

I LIVE in maternity tank tops! I was able to get a ton of them on sale at Target at the end of the summer and I’m so glad I did! I have a fear of wearing pre-pregnancy tops because I’m afraid I’ll stretch them out and won’t be able to wear them post-pregnancy…

Thanks, Bee! This is really helpful! Were the sweaters/cardigans you bought maternity, so they cover the belly more, or just regular ones?

I second buying maternity clothes earlier in your pregnancy. I was one of those who wanted to just see how far I could get with looping an elastic band through the button hole. I can still pull it off and hide the zipper part with longer tanks BUT when I tried on my first maternity pants, OMG! It was SO much more comfortable! I am still able to wear a lot of my pre pregnancy shirts/sweaters (just stretching them out a tiny bit) but I invested in 4-5 maternity pants of different colors so I don’t look like I’m wearing the same pair of pants every day (also because it’s a little too cold for maxi dresses). I also had yoga pants and leggings in my pre pregnancy wardrobe and wear those as well =)

I adored the belly band. I only bought 2 pairs of maternity pants. I used the band for all my regular pants and it worked for my entire pregnancy.

@merryc – i bought 1 black maternity cardigan and 3 maternity wrap sweaters (for the fall). i’m sure you can get away with nonmaternity cardigans and wrap sweaters if they are loose enough!
you can see me wearing a brown vince maternity wrap sweater here:

Thanks! I think I have most of these items, i have too many of somethings, but that’s what happens when you buy bags of used clothing off Kijiji. I’ll save my favourites after this ones born, and try to have a better collection of basics when we try for number two in a couple years.

I wear a seamless maternity camisole almost everyday! I got a white one and a black one at target and love how they smooth out my still-growing belly and give some extra length and thickness to my shirts.
I also love my riding-style boots as most of my pregnancy is during the cooler months. They’re flat and look great with leggings or tights.

I never used a maternity specific tank, I found super long, stretchy ones at a local boutique. I still use them, and at less than $10 each, I stock up on all kinds of colors!
I was able to use a larger sized coat, you have to try on a bunch of styles and sizes. I was willing to compromise on this one, because honestly, I never wanted to see a maternity coat again!
As for shoes, be careful not to buy too early, your size may change. My favorite boots didn’t fit at the end, I had to wear ankle high ones instead.
Another thing to consider is sleepwear and accessories.

I have two cardigans that look like #13. They have been and will continue to be perfect for hiding my pregnancy for now! They’re regular cardigans but i bet they’ll work all winter.

I love my cardigans and wraps! I have so many as is because I love to layer and only just now bought my first maternity designated one. I don’t think you need to buy the maternity styles though—most are worn loosely and with an open front so they can work throughout a pregnancy if you get a large enough size. My favorite accessory at the moment is one of my skinny belts. They are perfect for using with wraps and help give shape when shirts can sit funny and otherwise tent over a large belly.

Like Looch, I didn’t buy maternity specific tank tops, I just bought long ones that stretched. Also, I was totally lucky and was given a lot of maternity clothes from a new mom who didn’t need them anymore.

Yes, definitely buy maternity clothes early. They are so much more comfortable, I wondered why I held out so long.

I bought a belly band at the beginning of my pregnancy hoping that I would be able to work with my regular bottoms throughout the whole thing, but man-oh-man, my thighs. they have gained crazy weight. my mom, who lives 6 hours away, insisted on buying me some pregnancy clothes at the beginning of the pregnancy as well, though, & I really appreciate that now that I’m getting bigger. I just got some basics from motherhood maternity – 1 pair of pants, 1 leggings, & a handful of tops – I’m definitely in the “buy early” category as well. and loans! I had a girlfriend loan me some of her maternity stuff & that’s been invaluable

Wear your long earrings now girls! Put your hair up and wear those chandeliers now, because they are gone when your baby starts grabbing!

Yes to leggings! Oh my gosh, I love them! And, I also really love my flat boots as well as belts. I always throw a belt on over my tummy.
