We’re going to have to transition Charlie to a big boy bed sometime in the next year, and it’s something I was not looking forward to. I like that he’s nice and safe in his crib, and that I don’t have to worry about him wandering around and making mischief. But in my Pinterest travels, I discovered Montessori style floor beds, which actually made me look forward to Charlie having a big boy bed one day. In the Montessori method of learning, all of a child’s items in their room are placed at eye level to encourage exploration. While I’m fascinated by the Montessori method in general, I actually love the concept of floor beds because Asians have been sleeping on the floor for centuries, so it’s something I’m very familiar with.
Charlie’s current crib converts to a toddler bed with a pricey conversion kit, but I think we may forgo the toddler bed and go straight to a full sized floor bed. Visions of Mr. Bee and me reading books and snuggling with Charlie before bedtime are dancing through my head. And with a floor bed, we won’t have to worry about Charlie falling off — something my brother did well into his elementary school years!
Check out some of these cool floor beds from our Pinterest page!
Would you ever consider floor beds for your child?

Those tent beds are awesome. I want one.

I might, I guess I never thought about it before,
It’s a lot cheaper to buy just a mattress as opposed to a wooden frame.

Those are awesome! I had never even heard of them! I would consider it, but we since DS is now in a regular bed, we had a toddler bed sitting in storage… although we could get rid of it and use the extra space! I like the look of the floor beds, and I also like how much they “flow” with the room.

Absolutely! I think this make way more sense than wasting money on a toddler bed that will be used for a very short period of time. My parents had to do a set up like this for my brother. When he was about 1 year old he learned to launch himself over the edge of the crib so they had to get him out of the crib so he wouldn’t hurt himself. But he was still so little that they didn’t trust him in any kind of raised bed so they just put a matress on the floor and he was good to go.

This is awesome! I have a big fear of a kid rolling off the bed and this is the perfect solution!

Floor beds are really interesting. The best thing I can see is they’re not falling off and you can put it on a frame with box springs later, if you want to. Wow, some of those rooms!!!

I like the look of these, I dont know how comfortable they would be though, I have slept on a mattress directly on floor and its fine for a night or two but after a while it doesnt really compare to an actual bed

My LO’s slept on a “floor bed” (mattress on the floor) since she was a newborn!
I love it.
My 2 sisters and I were raised sleeping on the floor in Korea so it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

Kind off off-topic, but will you consider doing a post about Montessori and other models like Reggio, Waldorf, Rye etc? I’m just starting to look into preschools and all of the different philosophies are sort of confusing/overwhelming!

@Sha: yes because we’re looking at preschools right now too!

Oh my gosh, I love these! LO is a long way off from needing a toddler bed, but I’ll definitely be bookmarking this for future reference.

wow! These are so cool and definitely something I will keep in mind for my little one once they come along!

I love the idea of having everything at the child’s eye level. The floor mattress is also cool although I’d probably raise it slightly with a box spring or a modified frame of some sort, just so it’s a bit more fun for the LO to climb into.

I have been thinking about doing this my for my son who is 17 months. I know he could throw himself out of the crib if he tried, so I have been thinking about trying to get him used to sleeping on his mattress so he’s safer. We have played with his toddler bed on the frame and he always launches himself off of it face-first over the end of the bed.

hmmm never considered it before, but now, seems like a great idea.

Yep. I’m considering it right now. A friend of mine used this as a mattress base (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40125970/) and plopped a mattress on top. I might do that as well. And you can use both on a platform bed later on too. My only decision now is whether to get a twin bed or let my son use one of the two extra queens that we have. His pediatrician said it might be too big to start with so we’ll see.

my 2.5 year old sleeps on a floor bed! he started when he turned 2 and he loves it. he moves around so much when he sleeps that i was worried he’d just fly off a toddler bed. we also had baby #2 at that time and figured we’d buy a mattress instead of having to have 2 cribs in the house. it worked out perfectly. for the first few weeks he’d actually stay in the bed until we went into his room to get him, but now he comes and wakes us when he’s up.

The photos are very cute but oh no….. it reminds me of my college years when I was so broke I can only afford a mattress (no bed frame)!

I would absolutely consider a floor bed! less money spent on furniture, less worry about monkeys jumping off them & hitting their heads, & those ones with the tents built in above them are so stinking cute! lovely photos

Absolutely! DD outgrew her crib at around 18 months – she wouldn’t even consider her converted crib to toddler bed. We had been visiting my parents and she was sleeping on a mattress on the floor so after we got home, that’s what we did. We bought a couple of thin mattresses and layered them with quilts so she has a nice king sized bed on the floor! She has been sleeping on her floor bed for 1 year now and I will absolutely do the same for my twins when the time comes. Note that we keep her room door closed at night and she can’t turn the door knob yet. There are minimal toys in her room, mostly books – she is a very active toddler but does not get up to shenanigans alone in her room.
