Maybe I was being silly, but I put a lot of thought into our girls’ coming home outfits. There was a certain art form to picking the perfect coming home outfit. Here were my considerations:
1. We preferred outfits that would be easy to get a squirmy little baby in and out of (minimal snaps, ties or buttons) and that would be easy to get over a newborn’s head. Nervous hands don’t work very well with a squawking infant protesting the wardrobe change!
2. We looked for outfits with pants so that the baby could be easily buckled into and out of the carseat.
3. Consider outfits with no midline decoration or snaps to avoid irritating the umbilical stump.
4. We desired outfits that were adorable and that we could save to give to the kids when they were all grown up to show how tiny they once were. Hoodies with ears were preferable to those without (wink)!
5. We wanted outfits that were pretty equivalent for both girls so that nobody felt slighted when looking at pictures in the future.
6. We made sure to have back-up clothes in case there was spit up or a blow-out before getting out the door and into the car.
7. Don’t forget little mittens for little hands with sharp claws and don’t forget socks (like we did this time!).
Actually, we ended up being really lucky in that we found a similar Carter’s cupcake themed outfit for Jack Jack a full 2 years after Little Jacks was born. We got a simple newborn onesie, with warm pull-over fleece pants and hoodie sweatshirts for each girl. We hope they look back fondly on their different but similar outfits!
What were your considerations in a coming home outfit?

They are both adorable outfits (and girls!).

Awww. We honestly didn’t give it all that much thought. Considering it was a two-hour drive home from the hospital for us, I just wanted him to be comfy. I’m having a hard time remembering what he even wore!

I wanted something cute for a boy. And that something cute he only wore one more time after he came home. And I forgot socks too with my first. It was in the 90s that week and it was APRIL! Crazy… I’m not sure what I’l do this time. Probably something simple since we live like 5 minutes from the hospital. I did notice the cupcakes. So cute!

We didn’t know the gender of our baby, so it had to be something gender neutral. I really wasn’t too concerned with “cuteness”– it was the middle of winter; had it been summer, I might have shopped around more. We ended up taking our baby girl home in a brown and white striped sleep ‘n’ play– something very simple (I tend to lean towards things like stripes and geometric shapes on clothes anyway).
Your girls look cute
and it’s nice how similar yet different their outfits are!

Adorable! I have similar requirements and have already chosen two – one that is 0-3 months (I was 9lbs 12 oz when I was born and never wore newborn clothes) and one that is newborn sized (in case baby TTT takes after Mr. TTT’s side of the family when it comes to baby size). They both have feet, don’t have to go over the head, and are simple, classic, and blue.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m all going to my Southern roots for Sneakers’s coming home outfit. So far we have two Feltman Bros. dresses picked out depending on her size. I know she’ll only wear them from the hospital to home and then we’ll change her, but an heirloom dress is tradition!

@mrs. tictactoe: We were told that Jack Jack was likely to be very big, so we did have two outfits for her, one NB sized and one 0-3 month sized (the cutest little owl hoodie from Gymboree!)… She was only 6 lb 15 oz, so we were glad we prepared with the NB outfit just in case!
@c.sassy: Cute tradition! Are you doing tights underneath or will it be warm enough to go without?

So sweet that their outfits share a theme but are unique to each child.

@Mrs. Jacks: It will be early May in DC… if necessary, a blanket should be enough.

@c.sassy: Oh I just love that idea and will totally do that if we have a girl next time!
