I want to do a smash cake photoshoot for Olive’s first birthday, and I really want a simple, beautiful, and delicious (that means no fondant) cake. Luckily my friend who’s an amazingly talented baker has agreed to bake the cake. I actually need two cakes — one for the photoshoot and another for her little party — so I can have a little fun by getting two completely different cakes.
These are the images I sent to my friend for inspiration!
I love the ombre look, and I particularly like how the ombre effect is duplicated both inside and outside the pink swirl cake here.
More ombre above. The cakes below are so much fun with the simple addition of rainbow sprinkles.
These sweet, ruffly cakes are easy to make, and make for great smash cake pictures!
Simple white cakes just need a little rainbow pop to make them stand out.
After seeing the rainbow inspired photoshoot I posted about last night, a rainbow cake is definitely a contender!
Of course I have to consider a bee themed cake since Olive’s name is Olive Bee!
Which cake is your favorite? Are you planning on having a smash cake at your LO’s first birthday party?

Those are all so cute- good luck deciding! For my LO I’d go with the top cake because her name is Rose and it looks like little roses. But I love the sprinkles!
I think I’ll just make cupcakes for everyone and she’ll get one of those. I saw something on pinterest where you can make dried pineapple flowers to put on top- they look amazing!

I love the first one and the rainbow cake! Hmmmm, I am getting hungry for cake.
My LO had a big smash cupcake but she didn’t really smash it. She was very prim and proper. LOL!

I love the bee cakes (esp. the one on the left) but the ombre and rainbow ones are cool too! Now I want to eat cake. Darnit.

I love the first cake, and then the pink swirly cake towards the end. The bee cakes are sooooo adorable!

I’m torn between the first one and the beehive as favorites. We did a smash cake for my son (safari/zoo theme so his was a little tiger) and apparently I have a non-cake eater on my hands. He took tiny little swipes at the frosting and about 3 swipes in he was done. It was a bit of a let down.

I love the first one. Like, I want to go and make a cake just like that to eat right now.

From a photo shoot standpoint I think the ones with more color would be better. The rainbow or pink ones would look nice. Since you get two ( one for Photos and one for a small party) you could always get a pretty colored one for the shoot and one of the cute bee ones for her party

A Smash Shoot is definitely a must for my LO, and I agree with Mrs. Bee on the no fondant

I LOVE the purple ombre with sprinkles and the one next to it with the banner. I actually used both the same pics in a post I did about my love for ombre! Yay for OMBRE!!

What exactly is a smash cake? The baby just smashes it? Love love love the rainbow cake and the bee hive. Totally suits u and olive bee!

@tequiero21: the baby eats the cake with their hands, so essentially they smash it!
