You know the ones: high waisted, tapered leg, light wash. They make butts look extra long and flat and tummies low and bloated. I never thought I’d have to sport my own mom jeans, but with my new post baby body, it was time to take the plunge.
The key for me when buying a new pair of jeans, was that they needed to be higher-waisted than ones I used to wear. My new tummy is flabbier and low cut jeans give me a lovely roll poking out around the top, so I needed some that would cover that. I also wanted something that was on trend and that, when paired with a cute top, wouldn’t look like the mom jeans of the past.
I went to Old Navy, which is my favorite place to buy clothes that are inexpensive enough to be transitional, as I hope to fit into a smaller size in the coming months. I ended up with these skinny jeans. I like them because the are a little stretchy, so they hug my body in all the right places, they’re not too skinny, so they don’t hug in the wrong places, and they go up high enough so that I don’t have a muffin top hanging over. I do have a bit of a lower belly pooch in these jeans, but I think it will be a while before that goes away.
I love wearing these jeans with long flowy tops like this one and metallic flats, or with a nursing tank, long cardigan, and my good old chucks. While I still feel my best in a maxi dress, these jeans are great for times when a dress just won’t work.
Some other items I’ve added to my closet lately that I can’t live without are:
- fold-over yoga pants – the extra fabric folded over doesn’t cut into my belly like regular elastic and almost sucks my stomach in instead
- wide leg linen drawstring pants – I found some at a Gap outlet in a dark blue color and they are so comfy and cute with flip flops and a loose tee
- anything with easy access to my boobs – all my tops and dresses have to either be loose enough to pull down or have buttons for nursing convenience
I definitely don’t feel as cute now as I did before or even when I was pregnant, but luckily I have a really cute baby, so that makes up for it.
Are you rocking the mom jeans?

I’m 7 weeks postpartum and I can’t wait just to be able to wear any non-maternity jeans. One of the many side effects of a c-section is how uncomfortable clothing that’s tight around your middle, so I’m currently rocking one-size-too-big elastic shorts. Yep…elastic-waist shorts. Classy.
But as far as jeans go, I was already a fan of higher-waist jeans before pregnancy. 7 for all mankind makes a great pair.

Modg did a hysterical review of jeans to fit a post-partum body. I definitely plan to refer back to that when the time comes!

I love the Old Navy Sweethearts. They’re perfect for that time when you don’t want to spend too much but still need something.
Great post!

It’s too hot here for jeans…. I’m all about sun dresses. But I’ve been wanting to try not your daughter’s jeans, apparently they do wonders for your figure!

I bought a pair of those linen pants from gap outlet last summer! Bummer they don’t fit my post baby bod. I was thinking of stopping in there soon to see if they happen to have them again.

A new pair of jeans was the very first (non-maternity) clothing purchase I made after the baby was born. I feel so much better when I have a nice pair of jeans that actually fits me!

I bought a couple of pairs of transitional jeans too – skinny jeans from old navy! I’m wearing my old “fat” jeans now, which are only one size away from my regular jeans. I just need to get those running shoes on and I’ll be back to my old self in no time…I hope!

@bree72: It’s funny because I found elastic to be more uncomfortable because it digs in and creates rolls where as the jeans (in a larger size and higher rise) cover that area so I feel smoother and more comfortable about my midsection.

I have always preferred higher waisted jeans…my favorites are the always skinny jeans from the Gap. I have 4 pairs from pre-pregnancy and can wear all of them now at 3.5 months pp since they’re nice and stretchy. My mom uniform is a pair of skinny jeans and a looser/flowy top just like you described!

ha! this is like my mama uniform
flow-y open cardigans, nursing tank, henleys, button downs, skinny jeans and flats (or my Vans, the only sneaker that fit over my pregnant swollen feet, too).
oh how my wardrobe has changed… I will see my fitted pants and dresses sometime later in life, I hope!
