Toddler Girl baking muffins with Grampa
I’m loving being Mommy to a two year old! Not only does Toddler Girl enjoy art projects these days, she also looooves to help with cooking. Here are some things I’ve learned from our kitchen adventures together.
1) Be Relaxed – Remember that they are just little and won’t do things perfectly. Also, they will usually make a bit of a mess even if they are trying really hard not to. Such is life with a toddler. Embrace the imperfections; not all the cookies need to be the same size!
Helping Gramma set up a fruit platter (and stealing orange slices!)
2) Be Consistent – Little people thrive on routine. If you let them stir one time and not the next, there will probably be tears. Also, you need to model what you want them to do as much as possible. If you don’t want them to chow down on the cookie dough, they best not catch you doing it! If you think something is a bad idea (anything to do with the frying pan?), tell them “no” every time and they will often stop asking.
Helping Daddy do the dishes
3) Use cooking as a learning tool – There are so many things to learn while cooking! We are currently working on counting and colours. And of course, she’s learning about all kinds of food. I tell her everything I’m doing as I do it. Maybe she doesn’t understand it all yet, but she will!
4) Give them real jobs that are age appropriate – I’m currently letting her stir. She has a small wooden spoon and a smallish whisk (it’s actually from my mixer) depending on what she’s mixing. I fill up the measuring cups and spoons and we count together as she dumps them in (sometimes with help). She gets to take pinches of kosher salt from the bowl. Remember rule #2 — she notices if I add salt without letting her help!
5) Stay Safe – Obviously cooking is not without its hazards. It’s best if you’ve taught them about the dangers of hot things and sharp things (and yucky things that you shouldn’t eat) before you start cooking together. Never leave them alone on a chair or near a hot element. Watch the puddles. If you have a little person in your life you know that already, but still, accidents happen!
I love to cook, and it’s great to have my little sidekick in the kitchen with me! They are such little sponges at this age and so eager to help, it’s the perfect age to start them on the path to loving good food and having fun making it.
Do you cook or plan to cook with your little one?

When did she start helping you out and how? I always tell my 18-month-old boy, “let’s make xyz!” and that means he will mess around and get in trouble in the kitchen while I cook.

One of the greatest tips I ever saw was from a novel titled “Julia’s Child”…great read all about a mom who starts an organic toddler food company in Park Slope, Brooklyn…the tip was to use a chopstick for stirring, because a spoon in the hands of a toddler is just asking for a mess, whereas it’s hard to plaster the walls with batter with just a chopstick.
Genius, I tell you. It changed our lives.
I also recommend going to http://dashandbella.blogspot.com and reading from the beginning of her blog (it is lengthy in time period, but not content). Her writing about cooking with her two children, Dash and Bella, is inspired and truthful and funny and lovely.

@sloaneandpuffy: she started helping me cook maybe 2 months ago, so she would have been about 25 months? Before that she would often sit on the counter and watch me cook (or cling to my legs and keen. I really prefer the helping!). This is pretty much what I started with, although she had been “helping” with dishes for a couple months already. I think you will be able to tell when he’s ready
JENNIFER: I have a 50 1.8 (the nifty fifty) for my canon rebel xt. I do post process in photoshop. I usually lighten and warm up my photos using Pioneer Woman’s actions.
@Coastinganon: We did the chopstick thing a couple times, but she would just steal my spoon and be using the chopstick and the spoon…which was messier. She just prefers to use whatever I’m using. I have read Dash and Bella, I’m very impressed with what her little kids can accomplish, it’s great!

@Coco Bee: they love being in on the action!
@Mrs. Bee: I really wish we had a tower but we don’t have the money or the space for one. Maybe you’ll like cooking more if he helps? I enjoy dishes more these days.

My son is 18 months too, and he likes to pour and scoop, but he’s too messy for it to work with cooking right now, so we’re still sticking to water outside and sensory bins I filled up with large pasta. If it goes all over, I don’t care, I can just sweep it up!
I do need to get him a place to do his work, like a table or something. My kitchen is so tiny, though.

This sounds like a ton of fun (and pretty messy), but what a great opportunity to spend quality time together.
