I bought my first car the winter after I graduated college — a Ford Focus, which I thought would end up being a really great family car. Five years later, when Baby Jumper came into our lives, everyone warned us that we’d soon be graduating to a SUV, but I laughed them off. This car was my first baby. I worked hard to pay it off before Baby Jumper was born, and had every intention of owning this car until I ran it into the ground. In other words, me + SUV = not happening.
We travel long distance 3-4 times per year. I used to brag that my car had a fairly large trunk and would hold all of our belongings. My Focus was a great road-trip car with its excellent gas mileage.
But now that Baby Jumper is here, we have so much more to pack. This past spring, we took our first road-trip to Washington, D.C. I agonized over how we were going to pack the car and fit everything we needed for Baby Jumper. Our stroller just barely fit into my Focus, and there was no way we could pack the Pack n Play and our suitcase on top of that. We ended up having to borrow my dad’s SUV in order to pack everything.
Our trip to D.C. was such a breeze in my dad’s SUV. Papa Jumper kept commenting on how nice the drive was, and how spacious the seating was. It was far easier getting Baby Jumper in and out of my dad’s SUV than it was in my Focus. Still, I didn’t want to trade in my Focus. I was determined that we would make the car work.
The thing is though, Baby Jumper keeps growing. Her toys keep getting bigger. We travel so frequently that we were starting to worry how we’d pack all of our things for vacations. And what happens when we have another baby? How will we fit two car seats and a bigger stroller in our trunk? It just wasn’t going to happen.
So at the end of April, we started looking for SUVs. We were able to narrow it down to a specific SUV, a Ford Edge, and went from there. We price shopped online, made a few phone calls, and did lots of research. It really helps that Papa Jumper is a car-geek and knows his stuff. We knew the value of the vehicle we were looking at, and how much we could get for my trade. Later that week, we went to a dealership to test drive. Before we left the house we agreed that we were “just looking” but ended up coming home with our new SUV that very night.
It’s been two months since we bought the new vehicle, and I have to admit that I’m so very glad that we made this purchase. It’s easier to drive and has so much more space. I almost never take the stroller out of the trunk now and can still fit two weeks’ worth of groceries in there. We’re really looking forward to an easier drive to the beach trip we have planned this summer.
I was really sad to trade in the Focus: it was the first car I bought, it was the car we drove to the airport for our honeymoon, and the car we brought home Baby Jumper in. But I’m looking forward to all the new memories we will make in our new car.
Did you get an SUV or larger vehicle after you had children?

We’re still hanging on to my sedan, but really looking forward to a bigger car in about a year! We drive from DC to AL several times a year and always end up with the car packed. I think our first trip down with LO will probably prompt us to move our car buying timeline up a bit

I have a pontiac g6 which is roomy as far as compacts/sedans go, but we’re thinking of switching her in for a mid-sized SUV. Dh drives an expedition, though older, is great for growing familly…
It just sucks because I’ll be done with payments in a year and I don’t know that we’ll recoup any of the costs for trading in!… oh well~

@mrsjyw: make sure you research and know what you can trade yours for.
My biggest concern was having another car payment. I busted my butt getting us debt free before she was born, and wasn’t excited of the idea of having another car payment after I just paid mine off.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I’ve done some of the research on bluebook, but in this market (Detroit – motor city) there’s a plethora of cars stocked (new and used) so I think we’ll get less than bluebook price…
I’m used to the car payment, I just was looking forward to having that fall off!

We have kept our sedans. I have a Subaru hatchback and DH has a Jetta tdi. DH also has an older pickup with an extended cab, but we haven’t used it with DS since he moved into a convertible seat.
Right now We can pack the stroller, pack n play and a weekend bag in the trunk or back of my car and have room for an extra person in the backseat. Theoretically this could work with a second child, except that DH is super tall and has to have his seat all the way back in order to fit into either of our cars. So there is no way to fit 2 rear-facing carseats in our vehicle. DS is 14 months now, so we would have to turn him forward facing right at 2 years old if we got pregnant now and kept our cars. Not a big deal, but I want to keep my son rear facing as long as possible, hopefully to age 3.

I currently drive a sequoia (I totally love our car) and it’s a beast of a car (super roomy) so I think we’re good on the car front. I’m actually looking to purchase a sedan because sometimes the sequoia is too much car for me. The hubby currently drives trucks so he’s looking to get rid of those and take the sequoia.

We had to go bigger, there really was no option when we were faced with 3 infant backwards facing car set! We went mini van instead of SUV because the mini vans seemed to fit the car sets and strollers better. The car dealerships thought we were crazy because we brought car seats and stroller and tested each car for space. Nobody argued with the giant pregnant lady who also had an infant when I said I wanted to check the space with two spare car seats and two strollers

@Oceanis723: I think that’s an excellent idea!!
I was surprised that not all trunk space is created equally in SUVs.
Our things fit comfortably in my dads Voga, but we easily have twice the space in my Edge. That said, we Looked at every trunk measurement when narrowing down our choices. We also took the stroller and extra car seat base with us when test driving. It was important I could easily get baby Jumper in & out (I’m really short) and all of our essentials fit in the back.

We just traded in my husband’s 2-door sports care for a Toyota Highlander since we’re expecting our first in August and we looooooove it!

We sold Mr. Jacks’ Ford F250 (which we hardly ever use) and got an Audi Q5. He always jokes that we can’t have another child because they wouldn’t fit in the Audi!

We have a Ford Edge, too … and we completley love it!
It’s an awesome family car and I love that we can put her car seat/base in the middle of the back seat because there’s so much room.

I have a prius and DH has an infiniti sedan. We were thinking about upgrading for baby 2, but decided to hold off until the kids were a little older.

We both have Hondas right now – I drive a Civic and DH has a Fit. We’re are hoping we’ll be fine with those, though I haven’t tried to fit the stroller in the back of my car yet. The Fit has been very versatile for a smallish car and I think will be fine when we need to load up for a trip. Both cars probably only have 3-4 years left, so I would bet we’ll be onto baby 2 and upgrade to something larger by then.

I feel you… I’m definitely going to have to trade in my tiny Lexus is250 when LO arrives. With a dog and baby and gear, we are looking at a Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Some might say overkill, but I’d rater look ahead and get a car for the next 15 years!

Right now we have a Acura TSX and a Mazda Miata (yes a tiny 2 seat convertible). Both cars have been paid off, and we haven’t had a car payment in the last 3 years. I’m not ready for another car payment and trying to hold off for as long as possible. I do love my TSX and hope to get something similar with a bigger trunk. I’m thinking a station wagon will be in our future within the next couple of years.

@sgr523: We’re looking for a Highlander, too!
Hubs and I both have 4-doors; his is a sedan (Nissan Maxima) and mine is a bare-basics Chevy Cavalier. We’re going to give my car to my mom, and get a Highlander for “me”/us. We need to get on it pretty soon, since I’m due in 2 weeks! The crappy thing is that we have NO CAR PAYMENT right now, so it will totally suck balls to have to pay a monthly car payment again

@kml636: my mother has a highlander hybrid, and it’s awesome! her’s is a little older- maybe ’07, but i’d totally trade with her! i have a pacifica, which is super comfy & loaded, but she gets space, MPG, AWD, & doesn’t feel guilty for driving an SUV, she’s got it all! well, except for the 3rd row, i don’t think anyone over the age of 10 could sit comfortably back there, but i’ve heard it’s better in the new ones.

We got a SUV when we were TTC. My Saab was 13 year old and over the course of 9 months had cost us $100/mile to drive!! Things just kept breaking and it was getting so expensive to maintain. We have a big dog so we bought a big SUV. I pack it to the brim for our long trips. In fact, today I’m totally stressing about how everything will fit for our 10 weeks away. I think I need a rooftop carrier

@Oceanis723: Just wait until you see the looks on their faces when you bring dog crates to see how they fit ;).
I have a 2010 Honda CRV (my husband has a Prius). The CRV would be fine if it was just us plus the dogs and a car seat, but with my stepkids (for whom it would cause world war three if they had to sit next to each other) it’s gonna be a little tight. I’m looking at the Kia Sorento because it has an optional third row of seats that might save the day. Really don’t want to switch to a minivan if my commute goes from 30 minutes to an hour!

Yeah we totally got an suv too (4runner). Sometimes I wish we had something more fuel efficient, but I love the space and 4 wheel drive is very helpful here in the mountains come winter!

I drive a Mazda 3 and my husband drives a Mazda B3000 (truck). If we have to upgrade it will be my car. That makes me sad because I love my car!

@mrs. bird: I sat in the 3rd row before we bought our new Highlander to test it out. I think an adult could sit back there for around-town driving, although it wouldn’t be fun for a road trip.
@habesbabe We didn’t have a car payment either, so the fact that now we do definitely sucks. No way around it.

We are definitely in the market for a new SUV. Hubs drives a 99 Ford Ranger and I have a Toyota Yaris. We’re going to ditch the truck for an SUV. Looking at the Chevy Traverse or possibly a Ford. We’re just not looking forward to having a car payment.

WE upgraded to a GMC Acadia from my Ford Fusion. We were looking at upgrading but decided we needed to wait due to budget, well I totaled my Fusion in a car accident so it made taht decision for us. We decided we might as well upgrade to an SUV now, and I am glad we did! Lots of room for our growing family.

I’m such a planner…after college I bought my family car, Nissan murano, thinking ahead that when we started a family I wouldn’t have any car payments, and it worked out, my last payment was the same month baby was born.
Love my suv, there is so much room in the back seat for baby and trunk fits a ton and good space for diaper changes.

We both have sedans and we are still TTC but I think I will be fine for the first year whenever we do get pregnant and have our LO.
My next car will be a crossover SUV. I love the Nissan Murano or the Mazda CX-7. I do like the Ford Edge, too. I am also okay with a Toyota Rav-4. My sedan is a mid-size car that is a 4 cylinder so I definitely try to get the best gas mileage.
blogger / nectarine / 2687 posts
we actually downsized! we had a highlander that i loved, but it was getting old and needed a lot of maintenance. my sister had a prius and loved it, so we started looking into them and fell in love with the gas mileage and the space turned out to be just fine for all our stuff (it helps that it’s a hatchback). it’ll probably be a bit squishy with two, but right now we’re saving $200/month on gas, which is all kinds of awesome.

We currently drive a Toyota Sienna mini-van, but when we move to Kosovo next fall we’ll be getting a small car. DH thinks we should try to get a station wagon for the space issue, but I’m just not feeling it. We’re used to living small, and we NEVER use all the space in the mini-van.
