Avocados are a staple in our home for so many reasons: they are packed with satiating, healthy fats, take little time to prepare, and mama and baby love them. If I had one minor complaint it would be that Zane makes a mess of them. At home this is no problem; I strip him down to his diaper and we do a wipe down when he’s finished. I’ve started making these avocado fries to throw in the diaper bag as a part of on-the-go lunches and it’s really cut down on the mess, plus it gives Zane exposure to more textures and flavors.
Baked Avocado Fries
1/4 c almond flour
1 tsp dried thyme or za’atar
big pinch salt
1 avocado, cut into 1/4- or 1/2-inch thick slices
1. Preheat oven to 375º and spray a baking sheet with nonstick spray. In a small bowl, mix the almond flour, thyme or za’atar, and salt. Gently toss the avocado slices in the almond meal mixture and place on the prepared baking sheet.
2. Bake for 30 minutes, flipping the avocado slices halfway through. Allow to cool before eating.

Avocados are a staple for my dd too!. she has some with 2/3 meals!
I just cut them into “cubes” and she eats them.
My sister calls avocados “nature’s butter.”
Can’t wait to try this!

Does anyone know if they make organic avocados? My grocery store said there’s no such thing…

@septemberrain yes they do but avocados are one of the cleanest fruits so it’s ok to eat nonorganic.

@mrsbee – Thanks so much! Good to know

@IcebergMom: I think so. I only tried GF options but one of them was corn flour, so I imagine wheat flour would work similarly. It was less crunchy but still a pleasant contrast between the breading and avocado. If you try it, let me know!

Wow this looks so good and will give my kids some variety…. Can’t wait to try! Gotta find some almond flour…. Is that okay for kids under 1?

@tequiero21: Do you mean from the standpoint of allergies or ease of eating? Different parents I know have taken varying approaches when it comes to common allergens, like peanuts or tree nuts. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not discourage the introduction of common allergens after six months.
Here is a study published in 2008: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/121/1/183.full?submit.y=9&submit.x=112&gca=121%252F1%252F183&#sec-9 which summarizes that “Although solid foods should not be introduced before 4 to 6 months of age, there is no current convincing evidence that delaying their introduction beyond this period has a significant protective effect on the development of atopic disease regardless of whether infants are fed cow milk protein formula or human milk. This includes delaying the introduction of foods that are considered to be highly allergic, such as fish, eggs, and foods containing peanut protein.”

@tequiero21: Also, sorry that was a lot of info considering I’m not even sure that was exactly what you were asking about!

@Sarah Crowder: thx! I meant from the standpoint that u aren’t supposed to introduce nuts until after a year…… Not sure if flour is ok? They say cows milk after 1 but u can give them cheese….and yogurt….

@Sarah Crowder: Love this and will try this out!! What would you recommend if we don’t use almond flour? Would normal flour be OK? I want to try but LO’s daycare is a nut-free school so I can’t use almond flour…

@irene: I haven’t tried all-purpose flour but did use corn flour, which I think would be similar and and tasted good but just wasn’t as crispy. Corn meal would be great too!

@tequiero21: If you’ve decided not to introduce nuts until a year I would avoid almond flour as it’s purely ground almonds. We decided we were comfortable introducing nuts earlier, so Z has eaten these since maybe 9 months.

@IcebergMom: you could also just make your own by grinding almonds in a food processor. Raw almonds = almond meal, blanched almonds = almond flour.
These look great! I’m definitely going to try them. Avocado is one of my lo’s favourite foods!

Hi! No almonds in my house so I’m trying these with reg flour right now. Stay tuned.

@Sarah Crowder: @Sammyfab: @irene: Ok ladies.. I went for it with regular flour and I’m not going to lie… it turned out terribly! Neither LO nor myself had the guts to try it after the first bite. I can definitely see some crunch is needed. I even tried dousing in lemon juice and adding a bit more salt but I am sad to say I wrecked two avocados. Oh well, all in the name of experimentation!

@IcebergMom: Thanks for reporting back! Did it just taste like toasted flour? That does sound pretty bad
I bet they would be good pan fried!
persimmon / 1295 posts
Yep! I tried not to coat them in white but mostly to pat out the wetness but still was toasty toasty flour! Mmm pan fry is enticing me now! @Sarah Crowder:

@IcebergMom: darn, I went shopping and forgot the almond flour so wanted to try w regular flour…. Soggy fries do not sound appetizing….
@Sarah Crowder: what about bread crumbs? My hubby says I’m horrible at substituting so not sure if that even sounds good, but I can see how that could provide some crunch….

@Sarah Crowder: thanks for this! M is not a fan of avocados, I think she doesn’t like the texture. So looking forward to trying this and see if she’ll eat it then.
@Sammyfab: ooh good tip!

do you know what else we can substitute for thyme or za’atar? thx! going to try this soon! i even specially ordered almond flour!

@tequiero21: You can use any herb/spice mixture you like, although I guess some would be weird (like cinnamon?). An Italian herb mix or cumin also sound good to me.
