We’re a big soup family, but at 18 months of age Olive doesn’t yet have the fine motor coordination to get the spoon to her mouth without spilling most of the soup. In fact at age 3, Charlie still spills some of his soup as well. Olive doesn’t like being fed, so I usually put brothy soups into sippy cups for her. But since she eats mostly finger foods, I wanted her to get more practice using utensils.

Recently we ate at a Japanese restaurant, and Olive got to use Asian soup spoons for the first time when she was eating her miso soup. Because of the wide handle and head of these spoons, she was able to feed herself soup for the first time without spilling! Plus they were able to hold so much more soup than a regular spoon. I knew I had to get some ASAP!

I particularly liked the soup spoons above because of the curved handle. I definitely recommend getting plastic or melamine spoons though, as Olive broke one of the spoons above at a subsequent visit to the restaurant when she dropped it!

We didn’t have any soup spoons at home, so I gave Olive a tablespoon which worked well too! This girl is serious about her miso soup and a regular little spoon just won’t do. (We’re using these plates and these sippy cups, both of which we love!)

We received the most thoughtful package in the mail yesterday — Boogs sent us a set of soup spoons! She knew I was looking for some because I posted about them in the forums. Hellobee members are the best!

We’ve completely converted to soup spoons for Charlie and Olive now. If you’re big soup eaters like us, or your little one is having trouble using a spoon, give Asian soup spoons a try!
