I’ve shared in a few previous blog posts about my disdain for a certain little blue tank engine. But, I’ve never shared exactly why I dislike him so much. So, indulge me for a moment while I dive into the incredible annoyingness that is Thomas the Tank Engine.
First off, he and his buddies are freaky. In fact, it took Lil’ CB a while to actually warm up to Thomas and his friends and he called them scary for a long time (while I not-so-silently-cheered and happily directed him towards other toys and characters). The exaggerated facial expressions scared Lil’ CB and I was happy to keep him away from them. However, once Lil’ CB became super interested in the trains, the exaggerated faces became hilarious to him and I’m sad to say that he often imitates them. Especially the angry faces. Grrr. Literally. (On the other hand, check out this fascinating study about children with autism and their connection with Thomas and Friends’ exaggerated expressions!)
Secondly, Thomas and his friends are often whiny and pouty and boastful and mean to each other. They make fun of each other; play tricks on one another; and everything is always a competition between the trains. And they’re always getting into trouble with Sir Topham Hatt! Their behavior is just not what I want my 3 year-old to watch and absorb.
Finally, he’s eeeeeeverywhere. I’m not kidding. EVERYWHERE. When we were in Korea in 2010 he was everywhere there, too! You’re probably wondering why on earth I would expose my child to Thomas when I dislike him so much. The thing is, I don’t. Not really. But, if we walk into the book store or library, the Thomas books are prominently displayed. And when we go to friends’ houses, and all the kids want to watch Thomas, I’m not going to be *that* mom and not let my child watch. And, of course, when Lil’ CB’s doting aunts, uncles, grandparents, great uncles and great aunts find out he likes Thomas, Thomas he gets. What’s worse is that, as Mrs. Yo-Yo once said, Thomas is the gateway train and only sets some major train-lovin’ in motion. Sigh.
Since that darn tank engine is everywhere, we do try to limit his exposure to him when we can, esepecially when it comes to watching the Thomas and Friends show. At home, I don’t let Lil’ CB watch Thomas. We don’t get the channels that show it on our TV, so the only way Lil’ CB can watch is online or on DVD. We once borrowed a couple Thomas DVDs from the library and quickly decided we would not be borrowing anymore. I do let Lil’ CB borrow one Thomas book from the library on each visit, because as silly as it sounds, I do want to respect his literary choices.
We’ve really cut back on Lil’ CB’s screen time, but when he does watch something on the tube (maybe a total of 1-2 hours on the weekends only), here are the shows that are Mrs. Cowgirl approved for Lil’ CB (and while I still have almost full control of what he does and doesn’t watch, we’ll be sticking to this list!):
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: Hive, I love this show. LOVE it. (Confession: sometimes I watch it on my own. On purpose.) It is so developmentally appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers and the songs are so catchy and fun. I love the connection to Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (an old favorite of mine) and the lessons are simple, yet powerful. Plus, the characters are so darn cute!
Curious George: Yes, it’s true, George is a mischievious little monkey. But he’s never malicious, and I always play up the fact that George is a monkey and not a child which can be used to explain some of his crazy antics. I also love that there is a Math or Science lesson embedded within each 12 minute episode.
Super Why: I feel that some shows that try to integrate letter learning and early reading skills can often feel forced, but I don’t feel that with Super Why. Also, the methods the characters use to boost phonological awareness are actually pretty sound.
Chuggington: Chuggington has become our great train compromise. While there is a little more silliness and poking fun in this show versus the ones listed above, it is still presented in an age-appropriate way with much more easy-to-read redemption in those situations. Plus, this show has many more positive female characters, which is something that is seriously lacking in the Thomas stories. I really love the fact that the fastest chugger is a girl!
While I can’t keep Lil’ CB totally and completely away from Thomas the Tank Engine, I am not ashamed to admit that I will excitedly tout the awesomeness of of the characters on my “approved” list in order to downplay Thomas…I’m so bad.
Tell me I can’t be the only one…what children’s characters do you hate? Which do you love?

I liked Thomas the tank engine as a child but i havent kept up with it, you do make good points though.
I dont like spongebob. and even characters that I do like such as Dora the explorer are everywhere on everything and it gets tiring for me to see them so much

Little M doesn’t watch any TV yet, so we don’t have Thomas issues. I’ve never seen the show before, but I trust your assessment of it and now I totally regret buying a ton of Thomas trains from Zulily when M was first born. I was going to give them to him for his second birthday. Maybe I’ll have to sell them and buy some nondescript trains instead!

Calliou! Weird little kid that is constantly being naughty.

My son isn’t super into cartoons, other than Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Minnie’s Bow Toons at the moment. He really likes things with live people, so things like Justin’s House (UK based) are hits for him. We have some Thomas wooden trains, I love them! We also have some non descript ones.
I personally love Doc McStuffins.

My kid got exposed to Thomas the Train through his cousins, and he is NUTS for him. Like, crazy. I happen to dislike Thomas because of the whole “dirty diesels” thing (um….a whole class of engines is “dirty” and “untrustworthy”? Hmmmm) and the ridiculous message that one has to be “useful” all the time. Not to mention all the “Yes sir! Right away sir!” creepy Sir Topham Hat stuff. I hate that show. But my kid loves it. I’m torn. But I did enjoy the Slate critique, even if I don’t necessarily agree with all of the mom’s points: http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/culturebox/2011/07/thomas_the_imperialist_tank_engine.html

To be honest, I have never understood why little kids like Thomas. The show is soooooo boring!! Nothing happens. Everything is slow. There has to be something better – good for you for seeking out alternatives!

DH is trying very hard to not let DD get absorbed into the Princesses and Dora. However, he’s already failed in regards to Dora although we rarely let her watch it at home, she can sing along with some of the regular songs and has her own “I did it” dance.

love the article Natalie! Sharing with my brother!

Completely agree that Thomas is creepy! DD hasn’t really been exposed to Thomas the Train specifically so I don’t know anything about the show, but I trust your judgment and will try to avoid it in the future. DD is into Dora, and I actually find the show quite enjoyable. She will participate along with Dora and it’s very interactive. I haven’t found anything too negative/harmful in that show yet.

I LOOOVE Daniel! It’s my all-time favorite preschool show, for sure. He learns so much from watching that show, especially about sharing and bedtime routines.

Haha, I come to you from our very own island of Sodor…
LO loooooves Thomas and got sucked in early, much to my dismay. I agree that he can be annoying, and omg the stupid song is running through my head constantly. But, all things considered, I think he has been a net positive in our house. For one, it has become a major bonding thing for LO and DH, who cannot wait to move to our new house for LO to have room for a train table. We went to “Day Out With Thomas” recently and DH was soooo excited. And LO had a blast. Also, LO will play independently with his trains longer than any other toy.
I did want to keep the stream of Thomas merchandise to a minimum and am slowly losing that battle, too. Oy.
Anyway, I totally hear you (I tend to dislike most things Disney), but given some of what I’ve seen pass for kid’s programming, I give Thomas a pass. Agree that there are much better options though (our other fave is “Super Why” and while I don’t want to introduce any more than two shows, I agree “Daniel Tiger” is adorable).

I know what you mean. I watch alot of these “kid friendly” shows (or even some books) and they really send alot of mixed messages.
I read a book recently to my daughter. It basically talked about these group of animals befriending eachother then breaking into a house and sleeping in someone’s bed. The person who owned the house just became their friend….who does that?

The Thomas show scares my daughter for sure! She likes to play with the trains and tracks, though. That’s ok.
I let her watch Super Why. We’ll have to try the other shows on your list some day!

Great list!! I’m so out of the loop on children shows so this will be uber helpful when DS is born. Thanks for the compilation!!!
@Grace: I’ve heard multiple moms complain about Caillou and the poor behavior he displays because their own children pick it up! One of my friends actually bans this show because her daughter’s behaviour was getting worse and worse. She was young so her imagination runs wild and she used Caillou as a base to make up stories and do horrible things!

I hate Thomas because the die cast engines aren’t compatible with the track and nobody bothers to tell you that… Not the packages or anything… So we have a bunch of trains that don’t match their track. Grrr.
We don’t watch TV, so our kids don’t know the show, but I can even conjure that inane music in my head right now!

Not a Thomas fan either – my DS prefers Chuggington and I love it too. He also likes Little Einsteins or “Pat! Pat!” as he calls it.
I love Backyardigans – I think it’s soooo cute but DS could care less.

Also, I heard a lot of parents say they hate Caliou. B/c he is always talking in baby talk – and then the kids watching pick up on it and start to do it to. I’ve never seen it.

My LO started out being scared of Thomas, and I was hoping that we wouldn’t have to revisit the world of Thomas ever again. I was wrong. My LO is no obsessed, and I’m the crazy parent who buys Thomas trains and brings him to B&N to play with the train table. Sigh.
Luckily my LO loves Daniel Tiger, Curious George, and Super Why… so his train obsession is kind of balanced, right?

@Mrsbells: omg. don’t even get me started on sponge bob. he makes my skin crawl!
@theknest: @Grace: @Alivoo01: yes, calliou is AWFUL. i heard terrible things about him from other parents, so i watched a little on my own and i couldn’t agree more!

@Mrs. Stroller: the actual toy train themselves aren’t so bad. the wooden ones are very well made and as much as i hate to admit it, their wooden tracks are the best on the market. they’re freaking expensive, though! Lil’ CB’s got about 8 Thomas trains (all gifted to him), 3 Chugginton trains and the rest are generic from Target and TRU. be warned, though, because like @Mrs. Jacks: said, there are not one, not two, but THREE different sets of Thomas trains and tracks that are NOT compatible with each other. Another reason to dislike them — it’s all a money-making scheme!
off my soapbox.

@Natalie: Thanks so much for sharing that article! So fascinating!
blogger / nectarine / 2687 posts
@Mrs. Yoyo: yes, trains really opened the world of independent play for Lil’ CB. at his peak, he’d play with the trains for upwards of 2 hours at a time! joy!!
the toy trains aren’t so bad…it’s really the show i cannot stand and when Lil’ CB started reenacting the show with his trains was it became annoying..;)

Always hated Thomas!!!! We got Geotrax for G so I didn’t have to worry about him getting Thomas because he wasn’t compatible! Bwahahahaha! We also nixed Elmo pretty quick because I couldn’t stand how he spoke in third person and he was pretty selfish in my book!
Since DS is older our cartoons consist of Curious George, Rugrats, Superheros, & I recently started putting on Blues Clues & Backyardagins for P, occasionally.

I don’t like Thomas either. To be honest, there’s not a lot I DO like. Mostly, DD watches PBS (if anything), and I have to admit that I like Super Why, too! The pre-reading skill building is fantastic and it really draws DD in. I’m just cautious about Super Why because it can be flashy and a little fast paced for the younger crowd. So we only let DD watch it on occasion.
The other show DD really loves lately is Kipper the Dog. It’s a British show with very calm, realistic storylines. I think it’s cute and I like the pace. Olus each episode is only like 10 minutes long.

I think Thomas the Tank Engine is awful too. Our son shares a name with one of the other engines so he has been gifted a couple of the books and after reading them a couple times I got rid of them because the engine that bears the same name as him is such a jerk!

I was shocked at how many supposedly kid’s shows are not agreeable to my parenting philosophy and have been censored from our house. After watching and vetoing, I whittled down the programming junk to these few awesome shows: Daniel, Superwhy, Sid the Science Kid and Team Umizoomi (math). We used to watch Dora, Yogabba, Blues Clues and Peppa Pig when LO was 1 but those have fallen to the wayside as she grows. Again, very limited but intentional tv choices. Hb-we had a Kipper DVD which we really enjoyed too.

Thomas creeps me out. Big time. Luckily my little guy doesn’t know Thomas exists yet. He watches Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Sesame Street, and sometimes Curious George. Then there’s VeggieTales Silly Songs, aka toddler crack.

My 17-month old girls LOVE Bubble Guppies on Nick Jr! I just randomly saw it on On Demand a couple months ago. The characters are super cute. They have really catchy songs, and it’s educational too. My girls will beg to watch it and say, “bubba-bubba!” I’ve tried to put on Sesame Street or any other show that’s playing on tv, but they’ll ask for bubba bubba!

Right there with you on Thomas… although he seems to be the “it” character lately?! (UGH!) You know we are big, big fans of Curious George here.
And the Polar Express, natch.
I’m super impressed with your lack of tv time though. I’m not sure I could survive on “weekends only” … maybe I should try that this summer?

Thomas is my least favorite, so I don’t record it for him unless directly requested (usually after the name-dropping grandparents have been to visit). We also love Word World — he chose it, don’t ask me how — Cat in the Hat and Dinosaur Train (yay, PBS!). For songs, we prefer Bubble Guppies. It’s very cute. Not cute enough for me to watch on my own, but if they had a CD I might play that while cooking. I have tried and disliked many shows, but the favorite new one is Guess How Much I Love You. It’s just as cute as the book with positive, social messaging.

I agree that Thomas is a little freaky.
I don’t have kids yet so I can’t chime in from a mom standpoint, or more thoroughly, I haven’t watched a cartoon or kids’ show through “mom eyes.” But one I absolutely love (for myself, lol) is Rastamouse!! I think it’s a BBC kids show. I’ve never seen it on TV in the US, but you can look up some scenes on YouTube. From the episodes I’ve seen, Rastamouse (and his band/crew) solve mysteries in town. Like who stole something from someone, and then when they find out they get into why it was bad to do that. And then they jam out!
ETA: You can watch a lot of the “classics” on Netflix and Hulu. I think that’s what we will do mostly when the time comes! I myself have been revisiting Jem on the weekends

I was actually hesitant about curious George for awhile because he can be mischievous and not always obedient to man in the yellow hat. But my son LOVES curious George and after watching it a few more times it really isn’t so bad and I appreciate your assessment as a teacher that it is a good show
his other favorite is Signing Time- he LOVES it!!! And he has learned so much sign languages from the show.
Lastly, I like the backyardigans because of how imaginative they are, and four friends play so well together and really cooperate! He is a little young for it still, though.

I love how the argument against Thomas is that it teaches bad morals and all in all how to be a stick up society’s butt yet that was my obsession as a kid and I am omnitolerant and the least bratty of my siblings lol
