I photographed this adorable family a few months back. They were moving back home to Australia after being in Brooklyn for years and wanted some photographs to remember their time there. The photos were taken in Dumbo, Brooklyn. It’s a super popular spot, and rightly so with its great skyline views on the water’s edge with plenty of grass and parks all in the vicinity. And there’s always One Girl Cookies or the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory to entice your kids with afterwards! Believe it or not, these two sisters weren’t so crazy about having their photos taken, but we managed to work quickly and get some great shots nonetheless!
Here are a couple of tips when planning for a family photoshoot:
– These type of life photography sessions give a good snapshot into a day of your daily life — the fun age your kids are at, where you’re living, and a small glimpse into your lives at this moment.
– Expect the session to last 45 min – an hour. Kids are active and easily bored, and most don’t last too much longer than this while staying happy.
– Mornings and late afternoons tend to work best for lighting and kids’ moods.
– I’d suggest picking a spot or two in your neighborhood where there’s some room to run and move about. Kid’s aren’t always crazy about having their photo taken, but they do love playgrounds, carousels, and the prospect of ice cream or frozen yogurt. Even taking a ferry boat ride or grabbing a milkshake on a hot afternoon is a great idea. I like to suggest parks or even your apartment if you’re lucky to have some good natural light. Since summer’s almost here, the prospects are almost endless.
– Bringing along an activity like blowing bubbles, sidewalk chalk or a bike can be a great photo op and entertainment value for your kids.
– Most family sessions generally don’t do an outfit change unless we start first in the home, then move to another location. If you do choose to do one, I’d suggest only one to keep it simple. You can find a coffee shop bathroom to change. In this shoot, a change of clothes was brought only for the girls and they changed at One Girl Cookies.
For the best family photo sessions, keep them short and keep them fun!
