I lost my job a couple of months ago, and my last day of work was last Friday. I didn’t find a new job during my last two months of work, so here I am, a newly minted SAHM.
However, I’m a SAHM with a twist. A SAHM-lite? Maybe a SAHM in training? I’m looking for a new job, hopefully one where I can work part-time, which means we’d still need a daycare spot for Little M. Since daycare waitlists are years long where we live and little M isn’t old enough yet for preschool, I had to work out an arrangement with his daycare provider while I look for work. She is going on vacation for the month of August, so for the months of June and July we’ve agreed to a part-time schedule where I’ll pay 50% of his usual cost and he’ll go two and a half days a week (or just two weeks, if we go away for a couple of weeks to beat the summer heat!).
I’ve agreed to let her know by mid-July if Little M will be returning full-time in September. If not, then she’ll need to fill his space. That leaves me with just about one month to figure out where my career is going – to a new position outside the home or to a new position in the home. Either option scares me! I was with my old company for eight years so moving to a new one is a big change. On the other hand, I haven’t spent many weekdays with just me and my boy with nothing on our agenda, so that’s a huge change too!
Apart from updating my resume and arranging for a caffeine addict’s dream number of coffee dates with possible career contacts, I’ve been preparing for the next few months by researching all the (preferably free) toddler activities in my area. So far I’ve scoped out the best playgrounds within walking distance of our house – although only one is shady during the day, story hours at the local libraries (but they’re sadly on hold for June!), tumble tykes options at my gym and free-swim hours at local pools with wading pool options. I’ll also be sure to pick up a wading pool for our own yard too!

On the boards lots of people suggested getting out of the house at least once a day. And since I’m one who loves a schedule and a plan, I’ve been trying to figure out how our days might look. Mornings are little M’s longest awake times, so I thought that a trip to the gym for an hour or two after breakfast might be nice. We could return home to play in the yard and then have lunch before nap. After nap we could go to a park most days and to a pool once or twice a week. My goal is to start having dinner as a family, which means a 5pm dinner for all of us. I’m not sure if Little M can entertain himself long enough for me to cook, but I’m hoping to give it a try – especially if it means cutting down on the snacking that Mr. S and I do at that hour!
Thinking about how our days might look and actually living those days are two entirely different things. I’m pretty anxious about this transition in our lives and could use all the advice I can get.
What are your best tips for staying home with a toddler? Any tips for hunting for a new job – especially a part-time one?

I have no tips on the part-time job front, especially in the legal field, but please update us! After my job ends in a little over a year, I would love to find a part-time job. I did have a part-time job doing employment law for a university for a little while, but that’s when I was looking for a full time position. Have you considered doing contract work?

Good luck! I hope you find a good balance for your family. I’m working part-time right now and I like my flexible schedule. Thinking about being a stay-at-home mom with number two but I’m just nervous to make that transition. I have a stereotype in my head of what a typical SAHM is and I am afraid want to become that. Sigh. It’s hard!

I am a newly minted stay at home mom too! My partner is on bed rest and my almost four year old goes to preschool two days a week for the summer. I am adjusting slowly; some days I feel like I can do it all, and somedays I wonder what I did all day.

On the job hunt front, one of my favorite websites to job search on is http://www.linkup.com/ – it’s more for full time positions, but who knows… there might be part-time opportunities available too!
Enjoy your summer with your little boy!!

Congratulations/condoelences–sounds like a little of both are in order. I’m sure you’ll be fine–just make the most of your time with the little man and the time you have on your own when he is cared for by others. That seems like a great arrangement to help find the balance you’re going to need going forward. FWIW, I’m in the legal field in DC and I’d be happy to commiserate about the job search and share my network if it’s a good fit–eastportbride at mac dot com.

Definitely try to get out once a day and especially in the mornings if he doesn’t nap anymore. For me it helped for longer afternoon naps and by then you’ll be tired from the day anyway. I’m a schedule person as well so I try to plan out the next day and have everything ready for the morning the night before. That way you’re not putting so much time into doing this in the morning which could take up a lot of time if your toddler is having a bad day. Plans for the week I try to plan out on Sundays. Look into your county’s classes for toddlers. Ours has a ton throughout the year and are really inexpensive and they may even include gym classes since private gym classes are definitely on the pricier side. Now that my odlest is in preschool I do miss taking him to his classes. My youngest is still doing morning naps so I haven’t enrolled him yet; but as soon as he’s done I’m starting classes for him asap.
Not sure what you do but you might also want to check craigslist to look for people looking for part time hires. I was in the tech field and my old colleague found a bunch of contracting jobs via craigslist where we live (Washington, DC area) and she was able to work from home since she was a tech writer then. Good luck with your job hunt and enjoy your time with your son!

I wanted to message you a bit ago but life got in the way
Im in the same position as you are in many ways. Since Chocolate Baby is coming I am thinking of not returning to the family I nanny for this coming Sept. They sort of know and we said we would play it by ear through the summer but I honestly cant see it happening anymore. Its hard enough waking and dragging Drake in the AM nowadays I cant imagine doing it with 2 among a few other reasons as well. I am worried because I know I need to do something as Mr. Chocolate says to bring in a very small amount of money but still necessary for us to continue on with our lives as we know it. Its hard to balance though as childcare for 2 is very costly too so what I need to do needs to be able to either cover the costs of that and bringing in something or I need to be the primary childcare as I have been with Drake. Ideally I would like to find a child to care for in home or a nannying job thats mostly in the afternoon so childcare is at a minimum since Mr Chocolate is home around 5-530. I find it stressing not knowing what to do and if Ill find something since I am due any day so when I tell people that they always say contact them later after the baby is born so I feel like I cant move forward at all in looking and the uncertainty scares me. I dont work in the summer regularly so I know we will be alright till Sept at least as we always deal with this anyway and I do have some money coming in from my inheritance though Im not sure when exactly so I know I can rely on that for a little as well to make it a few more months if need be to buy us time but still I hate not having anything in hand too. I trust God will provide as he always has and will but its still scary and stressing nevertheless and I wanted to let you know you are not alone..

I’m not really sure if I should be saying “YAY!” or “Oh no!” here… I think that one month of a stay-at-home lifestyle may solidify your decisions and thoughts… but that’s also hard because a schedule is hard to establish. (At least for me it was!) As for job hunting… network, network, network. That’s how I ended up with my client list… I know… so not original. Sorry!
