According to my mother, I was speaking full sentences and potty trained by the time I was fifteen months old. While I can’t say for certain if she’s actually telling the truth, and I clearly don’t remember any of this, my entire family agrees with her that I was indeed talking and potty trained at a very young age. Apparently my husband was as well. With Chloe reaching her other milestones so quickly, we thought for sure she’d be easy to potty train. We looked up a potty training readiness checklist and realized that Chloe met all of the criteria at fourteen months old which really, really surprised us. Fourteen months seemed so young to potty train, but my mom held firm that I was out of diapers at fifteen months. So we bought Chloe a potty chair and decided to see what would happen, thinking that this would be so easy!
We were so, so wrong.
Despite all of the above, Chloe hasn’t been as easy to potty train as we thought she’d be. She likes being a big girl, though, and runs to the bathroom almost every time she has to go potty. She tells us while she’s peeing and rips off her diaper, so sometimes we have accidents. The few times we do make it to the potty in time we make a huge deal out of her accomplishment, but right now her going in the potty isn’t very consistent. Some days, going on the potty isn’t even on Chloe’s radar and she doesn’t step foot in the bathroom. We’re cool with that, too. We discussed potty training with our pediatrician and she gave us the following advice: even though Chloe is showing all the signs of being ready, given her history of UTIs and her being more prone to them until she’s about three years of age, we shouldn’t push potty training. Now that Chloe has more of an attention span, the concern is that she’ll purposefully hold her urine in so she can play a little bit longer instead of emptying her bladder, which would cause an infection.
Also, sometimes this happens. Ugh.
Chloe is only 20 months old so we aren’t in a huge hurry to potty train her, but boy, we’d love to get rid of the diapers (and the monthly expense!). We’re going to follow our pediatricians advice and take a slower pace toward this milestone.
When did you start potty training your LO?

We started to train around 18 months, and by 20 months, she was about 95% of the way there (maybe one accident every week or two), but we kept using diapers at nap time until she was about 2.5….and diapers at night time until she was about to turn three! My second daughter is 15 months old now…and she isn’t going to be even close to potty training for a while yet!

She is so adorable! I have a 11-month-old and I’m already dreading the potty training stage… but being able to cut out the diaper expense might encourage us to start soon!

We’re in no rush. LO just turned 2. Conventional wisdom says boys take longer, and while he seems ready in some ways, he doesn’t in others. Since we have No. 2 coming in the fall, I can’t see pushing it for awhile. Two in diapers will be a pain, but so will worrying about accidents while tending to a newborn. Realistically, I think we’ll wait until 3ish and even then take it slow.

We just trained DS last month when he was 2 years 10 months, and I am VERY glad we waited because it was so easy. He was clearly big enough and old enough to be potty trained. After about three days of showing him how to go on the potty he started telling us when he had to go. He was reluctant to go #2 on the potty but that was over in about 3 days as well. He hasn’t had any accidents at nap or bedtime. It was much less stressful than I had thought it would be.

She is so advanced!! I have a one year old now. She’s nowhere even close to ready for potty training. We may look at the idea when she’s 2.

Such cute photos! I love the one with the baby in the potty, we’ve been there, too :). My daughter potty-trained around 26 months. We had a potty in the house starting around 18 months and we talked it up, read books & watched videos about using the potty, made a big deal when she used it, let her watch us use the potty, bought her “big girl” underpants and let her practice with them whenever she wanted. Over time, she started asking for the underpants and no diapers, even at night. We were hesitant to let this happen but followed her lead. The first week or so there was a lot of laundry, especially at night, and there have been a few accidents since, but she’s been diaper free for 6 months now.
The best advice I got from experienced parents was not to force the issue, make it fun and support them as they learn. Also, to have a small potty in the car for road trips and the inevitable middle-of-nowhere potty request.

I will try to train her around 2!

She’s so cute! And I can’t believe she’s already 20 months old! She just turned 1 yesterday!!!
Um. We potty trained 2 weeks before DD’s 2nd birthday! She picked it up within 24 hours thankfully! Turns out I dreaded potty training for nothing.

DS was almost 3 and getting ready to enter preschool when I told him that there will be no more diapers. We had accidents for about a week, but we’ve home free ever since.

We’re ECing at the moment (have been for two months or so now)but he’s four months and I’m mentally prepared that I’m surely gonna be changing diapers for another year or more before we start potty training – even though we do get a bit in the potty every day. We’re on cloth so the expense is minimal but diaper changing is not my favorite thing to do!

With my oldest we tried the summer he was 2.5 and it was a nightmare. I gave up and did it a year later with all three (also a nightmare). Potty training is such a pain I am not looking forward to having to do it with my daughter. I can always dream that she will just be one of those babies that gets it quickly.

We started at almost 19 months and he was consistent by 21 months. He is 2.5 and does still wear a diaper at night, but not for naps. I was pregnant and wanted to get him out of diapers before the next baby arrived. It worked! I am glad I didn’t wait until he was 2, which was my original plan. He is a willful little fella now. I’m not sure he would be cooperative.

My mom also said both my brother and I were potty trained after or around 1!!! yea right, I don’t believe her.
LOL.
Not sure yet on how we will approach, but I don’t think I’ll be too concerned about it until he’s at least 2

We started at 6 months old just sitting him on the potty. At around 18 months old we got a little more serious and he had a few more successes. Now at a little over 2 years old, he poops and pees on command in the potty. As long as we take him. He never asks to go and has about 1 accident a day most days.
If we had UTI’s or any other medical condition such as your daughter, I would also wait. I think you are doing what is best for her and your family.

She’s 23 months old and still not there yet. She just doesn’t seem ready.

My 2.5yo boy shows little interest. He was really into the potty at 18 months but I was 8 months pregnant, sick, overwhelmed and lazy. So it’s my fault, but the idea is swinging back around now and we’re ready for it this time!

I avoided potty training like the plague. I think Mini Michelangelo was ready around 2, and at 2.5 months he finally took it into his own hands and potty trained himself. I got very, very lucky. Chloe will get there!
