Little Piñata turned 14 months old last weekend. Every month I think it can’t be true that he has gotten this much older! But, I guess this is what everyone says. We haven’t yet heard other parents say the time goes too slowly. Thinking back to a a year ago I can’t believe the difference between 2 months and 14 months! Last year we had to carry him around and now he’s begging to be let down after just a minute!

It’s such a fun age, but a challenging one! Mr. Piñata and I say this is such an exhausting phase because he has ALL the curiosity and none of the common sense yet. So I spend most of the day chasing after him as he runs around the house. But with all that comes so much fun! He’s getting more and more of a personality, likes to instigate Hide-and-Seek with us and even tries to “tickle” our toes. He laughs a lot and tries to repeat everything we say. He’s getting attached to his stuffed animal monkey and carries it around the house, kissing and hugging it. He’s learning so many new words and using most of them correctly!

Weight & Length: We haven’t had a Dr. visit in the past month, but he sure seems to be getting taller! He’s reaching the knobs on the stove now, so we really have to watch out as these curious boy gets bigger.

Sleeping: This month Little Piñata’s daytime sleep has been a little “off.” We’ve started the 2-1 nap transition, but for the most part we’re sticking with 2 naps a day. With just one nap he got too over-tired and ended up waking up more at night. We’ve shortened the morning nap a bit to prevent him from fighting the afternoon nap. But, there’s usually a day or two a week where he gets just one nap and that usually works just fine. It’s definitely a transition though, so I’m trying not to be too strict about the schedule.

Eating: Little Piñata LOVES meat! I feel like this is the first month that he’s really started eating more like a “grown up.” Baby food has almost completely been abandoned unless he really isn’t eating what’s for dinner. Although he LOVES those fruit and veggie pouches! How did moms used to raise kids without those!? We usually use them as “dessert” for him as we try to stay away from processed sugar. They’re also a good snack/meal on the go. He’s added foods like prunes, lettuce and pasta to his palate too. It’s interesting because he definitely wants his food to presented to him separated out. When we’ve done stew and the meat and vegetables are all together, he won’t touch it on his tray. But, when we give him a bite at a time he loves it.

This is what it looks like when he tries to use the spoon himself.

Clothing: He still wears 12 month clothes, but some of those one piece suits are getting too tight for him, so we know he’s growing!

Personality: He’s just fun, fun, fun! (Except when he’s cranky). He is such a spirited guy and he let’s us know for sure how he’s feeling. Thankfully he’s pretty happy overall, but he also let’s us know in no uncertain terms when he wants something and doesn’t get it. Thank goodness distraction still works pretty well. He loves other kids and has even started hugging and kissing some of the other toddlers in music class. He’s a sweetheart and I’m excited to see how this happy personality continues to develop.

Trying out daddy’s new riding lawn mower!

Milestones & Firsts:
-He started grabbing people’s toes and feet to tickle them! We quickly learned he wants us to giggle when he does this. Adorable!
-He started using the words bye, bye, bubba (for grandma and grandpa), ball, was-ah? (What’s that?), cheese, yes
-He has started to use a spoon with limited success. It’s quite messy, but we’re practicing.
-He identifies more animal sounds, including the sounds for a cat, monkey, dog, cow, pig and lion.
-He started climbing up our two little stairs.
-He started pretending (He picks up “pretend” objects and hands them to us or puts them in his little containers.)

Although there are days I feel like I just do NOT have the energy to be the mom I should be, these are such fun times. I’m so grateful to have the summers off as a teacher and get to spend more time with Little Piñata. He’s my little buddy, that’s for sure!
