You probably know by now that I love clothes. I do, it’s true. And while my dream closet would feature lots of variety, there is definitely something to be said for versatile key pieces that can be worn again and again and remixed and styled in lots of different ways.
Enter my favorite versatile year-round dress from Madewell.
Yes, the $118 price tag is rather steep for a poly/cotton dress but, I swear, if I was going to keep one dress in my closet, it would be this one. (Plus, I used my teacher discount and my momma got it for me for my birthday. ) I’ve had this dress since last fall and I was tempted to wear it everyday and probably did wear it at least once every other week in the fall and spring! Why, you ask? Well, for starters, it is a DRESS MADE OF SWEATSHIRT. When I wear it, I feel like I’m wearing pajamas. So awesome. If I can’t spend my day in actual pajamas, this is the next best thing. And, the neutral heather grey and the cut of the dress make it easy to dress up or down and style in many ways. Plus, the material is lightweight enough to wear in warmer weather (I wore it last week when it was 80 degrees!) but also thick enough to layer over or under other pieces and wear in colder weather, making it a truly year-round dress. Oh, and the pockets? Major bonus.
Since I did promise it was a year-round dress, here are my favorite ways ways to wear my favorite dress through the year (with lots of favorite affordable pieces)!
Throw on a colorful necklace and some cute sandals and this makes an easy summer outfit, perfect for date nights!
Fall: gingham button-down, riding boot, necklace
I love layering a button-down shirt underneath the dress in cooler weather and adding on a pair of knee-high boots — polished and still cozy!
Winter: cardigan sweater, belt, tights, ankle boots
A chunky sweater and some tights turn this dress into a winter-appropriate one. Add a wide belt to define your waist and some wedge ankle boots to complete the look!
Spring: polka dot button-down, ballet flats, necklace
I love wearing button-down shirts as cardigans, and with this dress, I’d tie the ends of the shirt together at the waist to cinch it. Layer a pendant necklace and add some bright colored flats and you have a lovely spring ensemble!
What are some of your favorite versatile pieces?

Love this post!!! I love ideas that feature one central (very loved) piece with a lot of options. I am so tempted to go big all of this right now. That blue sweater with camel wedges is to die for- and loove the gingham shift under the dress. I’ve seen that done well but haven’t tried it myself!
Normally dresses that go in at the waist and then have a skirt don’t work for my body type- but I really want to try this one!

A dress of sweatshirt??? I’m going to have a hard time not going to buy this right now.

I can see why you love the dress — it looks super flattering and is really versatile. I think you’re a lot cooler than me, ’cause I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have come up with these pairings on my own, but super inspired now!

I
Madewell! I'm definitely keen to try their dresses. That floral pattern they put out is amazing!!!! And if you average out how much you've worn that dress it really isn't that expensive at all. at least that is how I look at it.

Love it!
I usually buy dresses and skirts thinking, “will this look good with tights and a cardigan?” so I can use it year ’round.

I can’t wait til I’m done breastfeeding so I can buy dresses like this one. The high prices at Madewell for such basic looking clothes have always steered me away, but you are SO TEMPTING me… WHY MUST YOU DO THIS TO ME CG… WHY.

I got that dress at the beginning of the summer and I adore it! So comfy and it hides the post baby belly. Thank you SO much for giving me all these great ideas on how to get more use out of it!

Wow looks so comfy! I love pretty much all madewell dresses. Gallerist ponte dress is also really nice and very versatile. Wish they were all more affordable but you so get lots of looks out if them and they fit like a dream.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: Does it run small or big? I just ordered.
I ‘m in love with gray and soft stuff!
blogger / nectarine / 2687 posts
@808love: it runs true to size — I wear a small regularly and the small fits well in the dress. You could also go a size up if you want it a little more roomy, but I found it more flattering if it’s more fitting. Are you going to get it?
pomelo / 5866 posts
@Mrs. Cowgirl: Yes. It just so happens I was really good on my budget this month so I had extra money ‘laying’ around.
I got it in my regular size-medium- but I’m between a medium and a large so I was just wondering. I prefer being a medium, if you know what I mean. We don’t have any Madewells nearby otherwise I would have received the teacher discount. Oh well…thanks for the tip on those other teacher-perk stores–I didn’t know about those too.

I have a maternity dress from GAP that is very similar to that dress. Love how many options you have shown for it! (but hopefully it’ll be a little while before I’m back in maternity clothes, haha)

@Mrs. Cowgirl: Just got it in the mail and of course wore it out on a day date right away. It fits well and love the comfy cozy. I didn’t expect it to be of a thicker material but just like a sweatshirt and it feels like high quality.
