I love making these headbands as gifts for friends who are having baby girls; they are relatively easy, take less than 30 minutes and are so beautiful.
Supplies::
Scissors
Lighter
Candle
Clothespin (optional, but recommended)
Faux Satin/Silk
Small piece of black or white felt
Elastic lace or FOE – I got mine from Joannas and etsy
Buttons or pearls
Fabritac glue
Optional supplies::
Clothespin (recommended)
Pen
Lids of various sizes
Piece of paper
Needle & thread
Step 1::
Gather supplies and work in a clean workspace clear of children and animals. This tutorial does involve a small flame, so please exercise caution. Start by cutting the elastic to the desired size of the headband. Here is a general sizing chart:
Newborn: 13″
3/6 mos: 14″
6/12 mos: 15″
12-24 mos: 16″
2T-adult: 17″
Glue the ends of the lace headband together with a small amount of fabritac glue.
Step 2::
Trace lids to make circle “patterns”. This is optional if you would prefer to freehand the fabric circles. Pin the paper circle patterns to the fabric and cut at least 4-5 layers of various sizes.
Step 3::
Use the clothespin to hold one circle (not pictured). This is because even though a tealight is a small flame, it is still very hot. Holding the circle with a clothespin makes it easier to maneuver and safer for you. Slowly lower the circle directly above the flame; you will see the edges of the circle start to fold in as they “melt.” Be sure not to set the fabric on fire (just blow it out if it does!)! Continue to do this with the rest of the circles.
Step 4::
Now you should have about 4-5 “petals.” Layer them together to create the flower.
Step 5::
Use a small dab of fabritac glue in the center of each individual petal to create the final flower. You don’t need much glue – it is a strong bond!
Step 6::
Use the fabritac glue to adhere pearls/buttons into center of flower. As an extra potential choking hazard precaution, I often sew the pearls/buttons onto the flower and then glue them in the center as well. Fabritac is a very strong glue, but I like to be extra cautious.
Step 7::
Cut a circle out of the felt that is smaller than the flower and adhere to the underside of the lace headband.
Step 8::
Dab glue on the felt and adhere flower on topside of headband.
Voila!
This project takes less than 30 minutes and is a very inexpensive gift for baby showers and friends with new baby girls. I love how elegant the layered petals look, but it is truly such an easy project.
Have fun!

Cute cute cute!!! I have a TON (like, 300 – seriously) of those metal hair clips for making bows – it would look super cute glued onto one of those!

What, this is how you make this!? I just ordered a rainbow colored one (each petal different color) clip just like this for my DD on etsy and paid 8 bucks (including shipping)! Next time I’m making my own. Thanks for the tutorial!

Super cute! I wish Lilly would keep cute flowers on her head. She always just rips them off.

@T-Mom: the fabric is SO cheap that is seriously costs less than $1 to make these! I’m working on adding them into my etsy shop – but they can get a little labor intensive if you make a bunch. I think $8 would be pretty standard – but definitely worth trying to making yourself because it’s so easy
@swurlygurl: those would work great too! I have a bunch of those – but most baby girls I know don’t have enough hair for that
