If you’re anything like me, you’re constantly behind the camera trying to capture memories of your child’s big milestones, and even their little everyday moments. And so naturally, since kids love to imitate their parents, my kids love to pretend to take pictures or use my phone camera to take a dozen blurry shots of their feet. My 3.5 year old son started showing interest in “taking pictures” over a year ago, so I gave him my old digital camera (from almost a decade ago!) to take his own real photographs. He was in love. It was his favorite toy until it broke and wouldn’t take pictures anymore. I debated buying him a cheaper grown-up camera but quickly dismissed the idea after seeing the damage done to my old one. So I spent hours researching the best quality and most durable kid cameras out there. And here’s the round-up:
2. Vtech Scroll and Learn. Also for the younger set because it’s not a real camera. It has a LED screen that plays black and white animations with 40 objects and 10 locations to explore. It has a working flash and lots of engaging buttons and music to make it entertaining for even the littlest photographer.
3. Fisher Price Kid Tough. A real digital camera that’s kid-friendly and built to survive drop after drop. It has a 1.4″ color screen, 4x digital zoom, and can store up to 2000 pictures (256 MB). It also comes with downloadable software where kids can add special effects to their pictures after uploading their images to a computer.
4. Fisher Price Kid Tough See Yourself. Identical features to the previous Fisher Price Kid Tough Camera but with a 180 degree swivel lens so kids can easily take pictures of themselves. It also has the ability to take videos. This one is about $12 more expensive, but I think being able to take self-portraits (selfies) makes photography so much more fun for kids!
5. Vtech Kidizoom. A real 2.0 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, self-timer, and 5 games. It has a rotating lens for self-portraits, the ability to take photos with special effects like stamps or borders, and video recording with sound.
6. Fujifilm Instax Mini. This isn’t a kid camera but it’s so easy to use I included it for those of you with slightly older kids. It’s a point-and-shoot camera that develops your pictures instantly (like a Polaroid). That instant gratification makes it fun for kids, but I definitely wouldn’t get this for a toddler. I recommend this for older kids (5+ years) that already know how to use a camera and can take semi-decent shots because the cost of film can quickly add up!
If you have a little budding photographer, I think it’s worth the investment to buy them their very own camera. I was torn between the Fisher Price Kid Tough See Yourself Camera (#4) and the Vtech Kidizoom (#5) but ended up purchasing the former because it was the only one in stock at the time. My son loves it so much and I highly recommend it, but I think next time I’m in the market for a kid camera we’ll try the Vtech Kidizoom because it has a built-in flash and a viewfinder. The Kid Tough See Yourself Camera is great but I frequently find my son putting the camera to his face (like mommy does with her camera) but there’s no viewfinder to look through. But he doesn’t seem bothered by it at all. And I’m happy because I don’t have to worry about him trying to use my DSLR camera or have to go through my phone to delete blurry pictures of random items in my house.
Anyone else’s kid snap happy?

This is a great list, and something most parents wouldn’t even think about… but do I feel like it’s missing one option – the Playskool Showcam. If we had seen this before we bought our 3-year old daughter her Kid Tough camera, we probably would have bought it instead. It has a ton of silly effects to add onto your photos and a little projector that displays the photos on any flat surface – so cool!!

Perfect timing! I’ve promised my 3.5 yo son his own “real” camera for an upcoming holiday (I’m hoping it’ll stave off boredom on long plane trips). He is an avid photographer with the iPhone and iPad and has been eyeing off my dslrs lately… Danger! I think we will go with the vtech kiddo zoom and I might get the fisher price retro for my 13 mo… Thank you so much for this guide!!

This is perfect! A kiddie camera is on our holiday list for Wagon Jr. and I was totally confused looking through Amazon reviews so I can’t wait to go through your list with Wagon Sr. Thanks!!

We have #1, #5, and #6. LO sees us with cameras all the time and loves to be just like mommy and daddy. He is starting to use the V-tech and working on aim. Even though there is a viewfinder, it’s not very accurate. He likes to look through it though and play around with the buttons. I have an Instax that I bring around with me, and he loves the instant results and waiting for the picture to develop. Can’t wait to let him use it one day.

Love this! My LO started with “taking pictures” with anything she could find. A toy phone, a toy credit card, etc. She’d hold it up and say, “cheese!” Then her nanny got her a fake camera for her birthday so she loves that. I’d love to get her a real camera some day.

Our 2 year old has been taking random pictures for quite sometime but now that she has more control, she can be sent on a mission. I sent her on a photo hunt of her 5 favorite toys. The results were a great story to tell! I loved when she came back and said, “The pictures don’t say cheese!” She now takes pictures with a regular Canon underwater camera. It has big grip buttons and very rugged.

Very interesting. Because my dad is a near professional photographer, we already know what DS’s first camera will be. A used, older model one of these http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/838514-REG/Panasonic_DMC_TS4D_LUMIX_DMC_TS4_Digital_Camera.html
waterprood, drop resistant Lumix by panasonic. I love Lumix for their point and shoot cameras.
And I also remember by age 5 I was taking some pretty awesome photos (some better than I even take now!) so I want to invest quite a bit.
#1 and #2 are such throwbacks! They remind me of those funny “cameras” that you put the disk in and got to see a “wheel” of photos on that disk.
#3 is cheap! If my dad wasn’t so into photography that would be the one in my budget.
#4 cracks me up. Kiddos taking selfies.
Thanks for this post. I
photography and love to hear people talking about it and introducing it to their kiddos.

Great post. My cousin was letting my almost 3 year old take photos with his DSLR a couple months ago – brave man!! Of course my mom and I were like – thanks… now he’ll think he can use ours too!
Gramie bought him this VTech (http://www.amazon.com/VTech-80-122700-Kidizoom-Digital-Camera/dp/B004N53IC0) for his recent birthday… but we haven’t actually given it to him yet. So many presents – we’ve spaced them out
I might give it to him tomorrow though.

Great post Hannah. I have heard the Fisher Price Kid Tough to be a nice little piece of kit. It won’t break when the child bashes it around and most importantly it can actually take photographs! Depending on the age of the child, it won’t matter too much whether it is a real camera or something like the fisher price retro camera. It would be interesting to see what the little one makes of the world taking photographs.
