I did a post a while ago about some of Drake’s favorite book authors. Since then Drake’s library has grown, so I thought I would share some of the new authors we have discovered and added to our shelves.
Octonauts- I discovered Meomi (the creators of the Octonauts) years before I had children. I loved their adorable, whimsical, child-like style of art. Before Drake was born they created the Octonaut series about a group of animal undersea explorers. I bought a bunch of their books and happily perused them myself until Drake’s arrival. At 3, Drake is just starting to get interested in these books. The stories are often a bit over his head and long for his attention span, but he loves the illustrations and the characters. He hunts for them on every page. His favorite by far of the series is the Frown Fish. I won’t spoil the story but Drake figured it out before I finished reading it to him the first time. I believe the Octonauts have a TV show now. (Sea of Shade, The Only Lonely Monster)
Divya Srinivasan – Srinivasan’s first book, Little Owl’s Night, has 5 out of 5 stars on Amazon and every review is glowing. The story is about a little owl that travels through the night as he watches the creatures of the night move around until the sun comes up, changing the night to day. Drake is very fond of this story and loves seeing what the world is like at night when he is asleep. She came out with a new book this year about an octopus and I imagine Drake, who loves everything about the ocean, is going to want to read this one too so I recently purchased it.
Betsy E. Snyder – I am a big fan of Snyder’s style of illustrations (she is an author and illustrator). Her books are charmingly sweet and perfect for little ones. Her Sweet Dreams Lullaby is a personal favorite of mine, as the soothing rhymes and illustrations are so darling. She has a few books about haikus which I found amusing and different in the landscape of children’s stories. We own quite a few of hers including Haiku Baby, Sweet Dreams Lullaby, and Peanut Butter and Jellyfishes. I always check back to see what else she has in store.
Green Start- Green Start books are made on recycled material and deal with a lot of planetary issues, animals, gardens, nature, etc. The environment is something I hold dear and want to teach my children about like I was taught as a child. I find the fact that the book looks different from many other books is a great starting point to talk about recycling and reusing things so that we can preserve our earth. The topics are all earth friendly and fun at the same time. (Animals Everywhere, One Tree, The Five Senses)
