Well, the honeymoon is over. My days of guiltlessly laying around the house, cuddling with LL, watching Netflix, and reading on the iPad are over. I recently noticed that when the TV is on and LL and I are playing, he becomes very distracted by the pretty flashing rectangle on the wall. We have our flexible schedule, but aside from going to the gym a few times a week, meeting Daddy or other friends for lunch, and almost daily trips to Target, we really haven’t been doing a whole lot worth mentioning.
One day someone asked me, “What do you do all day?” I was shocked that I don’t really have an answer. 5 months of my life, and I really can’t account for where the time has gone. To an extent, I think that is just a byproduct of being a new mom. But, as I am quickly discovering, the time passes way too fast, and I want to make the most of it. I am blessed with a happy baby that has a go-with-the-flow personality, but I don’t want to passively miss these super fun days!
So, now that LL is actually aware enough to know what is going on, I decided to let Teacher Lion take over. I bought a planner and turned it into my Mommy Lesson Plan Book.
Now, I know what you must be thinking. Lesson plans? For a 5 month old?
But really, these plans are for me.
I found a planner that is designed for students. Rather than being broken down by time of day, it is sectioned out so that you have room for individual classes. I have been able to designate different boxes for different priorities that I have set for our day. I then have room to plan, and to then check off what we accomplish.
I sit down on Sunday night or Monday morning and sketch out what I think our week will look like. I splurged on Ticonderoga pencils… the ones with the best erasers, for you non-teachers out there. Our plans change throughout the week, so writing in pencil gives me the opportunity to move things around.
Some of the things I have decided to plan for include:
For Little Lion:
- Gross Motor (tummy time, sitting, standing)
- Fine Motor (holding a rattle or other object)
- Sensory (play with bells, drums, feel different textures…I get ideas for this from Babycenter)
For Momma Lion:
- Bible Study/Quiet Time
- Cardio
- Strength Training
- Social (I try to make sure I see grown up people a few times a week if possible)
- Blog Posts
- Chores/Cleaning
- Evening (I try to plan a few nights a week so that Mr. Lion and I do something other than zone out in front of our electronic devices…this is a work in progress, as usually I don’t really want to do much of anything once LL is in bed.)
Do we accomplish everything I have planned every day? Absolutely not. But, having a list to check off makes me feel better. When I get to the end of the day and I find myself wondering where the time went, I have something to look back on. When I feel defeated at the end of a particularly difficult day, I am reminded that not every day is so exhausting. I can make sure we don’t go an entire week without Tummy Time (been there), and as LL grows I can plan fun crafts or games in advance so that I can make sure I have materials available.
These plans aren’t detailed (notice how not detailed they are in the picture above….), and I have no interest in over scheduling our life, but I am finding that having a written plan holds me accountable to use my time wisely. That way, when I decide to take a day to cuddle and veg out in front of Netflix, I can do it guilt-free knowing it is just a day, not a lifestyle.
How do you manage your time as a SAHM?

This is lovely and I so wish I had read this back when I was a SAHM!! This kind of structure involving everyone would have kept me sane!! Although, I probably would have hesitated to make plans for fear that I wouldn’t follow through and rebel against myself. I might have followed a teacher-crafted one though. Maybe you can create a little sample weekly curriculum for different age stages and post them on Hellobee!!
Maybe have them be cute printouts that stay at home parents could post on their wall!

Great idea! I’m also at the stage where I’m starting to need structure in our day
may just try something like this!

Love this post
such a great teacher and momma!
You may have inspired me once again to do as the famous Megan does!! Make sure you just add some Jen and Carley time to the mix!

I love this! I’m actually not a SAHM. I work FT. But, if I were a SAHM, I would totally do this. I’m way too much of a “Type-A” personality, and this idea fits me to a T. And I agree, it’s not about the child needing this, it’s all about the parent that needs it to keep sane.

I love this. I will probably need something like it. Right now I just make small to-do lists for myself at the beginning of each week, but I think I need to be a little more detailed with my time breakdown because I still find myself wasting hours a day.

I have a loose schedule for my 15 month old.
Wake up (6-7) – I put on music in his room, give him milk, we read some books. Diaper change.
7-8 – unload dishwasher and make breakfast – T usually “helps” or plays with toys while I do this.
8-9 – eat breakfast and clean up. He plays with his toys in playroom while I do this and I put toddler tunes on pandora for him.
9-11 – activity outside of the house. Usually gym (he goes to the kid daycare), swim, run errands, playground or music class.
11-12 – make and eat lunch together.
12:30 – nap routine. hopefully he’s asleep by 1.
1-3 (if I’m lucky) – I clean up from lunch, fold laundry, do some light housework, answer emails, pay bills, read outside for a bit.
3-4 – indoor play and snack time. i need to get better about this, but lately I’m trying to do art projects with him. Sometimes we run an errand here.
4-5 – backyard play – water table, dig in dirt, etc
5-6 – free play while I make dinner. this usually involves him tugging on my leg and whining while i cook.
We waste plenty of time and every day changes just a little.

It’s funny I did almost the exact same thing last week. I have two under two so even running to target takes lots of thought and planning. I think the key to success is planning and being easy on yourself when things change. Kids are unpredictable!

That looks great! I try to keep a routine to our days so that certain things happen at certain times, but of course that doesn’t always work out. We try to meet up with a couple of other moms once a week, we do library storytime once a week and I’m looking at getting her into a more physical class now that she’s 9 months. There are many afternoons where she just won’t nap well!

I love the idea of being so purposeful about your day! (Possibly because I’m also a teacher

That’s a great idea! Now that I’ve read this, I think we missed our tummy time today. (LO is almost 4 months) I think I saw a planner like that at Staples, but it was for the academic school year, I guess that should work.

Love this!!!
I’ve been lining out our school year this week & was kinda stumped how to get all our schedules organized, never thought of a student planner! I had G’s schedule down with this I’ll be able to plan stuff for P too so she doesn’t get “forgotten”! I’ll definitely be picking one up this week!

That’s awesome. As I’m reading this, I’m sitting in my pajamas watching Netflix as the baby naps. I was thinking the same thing, man I need to get more done. I have been trying to schedule things out but I like your planner. I might have to get one. I’ve been scheduling out things day by day, but I sometimes find it hard to do that frequently.
One thing I do is plan one nap for me/fun time and one nap for chores. And if I need to run any errands I plan them for right after a nap when baby is least cranky. I’ve also had to learn to just be easier on myself. Taking time to play with my baby is important and sometimes that means laundry is left in the basket on the floor.

Great idea! Have you visited http://www.funathomewithkids.com? She has some great activities and she is also a teacher turned SAHM.

@mrs. wagon, I love that idea! I need to purchase and learn to use photoshop so I can make cute stuff!

@dana, thanks! I love love love that website!
I can’t wait for LL to be just a little bigger so we can do some of her fun stuff! The blacklight ooblick looks so fun!
