I developed a love of hummus when I was pregnant with Drake. I think my body craved the protein because I’m not a huge meat eater. I also very much dislike beans of all kinds, but in hummus form, the beans became more palatable. I’ve recently been on a kick of buying less processed foods if I can attempt to make them myself. I found this chart on Pinterest on 13 different ways to make hummus and decided to give it a try. I had all the ingredients for the Italian recipe except the beans, so it was an easy choice. I love sun dried tomatoes and always buy hummus from the store with them in it, so I thought I would give this a try to see how it compared to the store-bought version.
The recipe called for
- 1 can of cannellini beans or chick peas
- 1/4 cup sun dried tomatoes but I just eyeballed it and added more since I like them
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon oregano
You drain the beans and then place them all in the food processor and mix until smooth.
So the results? Mr. Chocolate felt like it needed garlic and I wanted a pinch of salt or two, but overall we were both pleased with the results. The instructions said to add water to make it creamier and smoother, but we forgot until we were done so ours had a bit more of a paste feel and we will probably try to add water next time. Mr Chocolate liked that we knew all the ingredients that we placed in and it cost a lot less than our normal hummus; all we bought was a can of organic chick peas, and all the other ingredients are staples in our home. Next time we might try to add garlic and salt and maybe other seasonings to experiment with taste as well as other recipes on the list.
Have you ever made your own hummus? What do you like to add to it?

We make our own hummus here too… but you have way more exciting hummus! (Edamame is about as crazy as we have gotten here) I’m going to have to give some of these a try! YUM.

Yum! I want some hummus now – I think I’ll go to the store and get some at lunch, since I won’t be able to wait until I get home to eat some

Now I’m craving hummus… haha
I never make it because I can’t stand to buy canned beans when dried beans are SO much cheaper (and less waste/processing involved). But, then I don’t want to cook the beans because they take so long…

I love making hummus, but I’m crazy and actually peel my chickpeas! It makes the smoothest hummus in the world! I learned the trick from the Smitten Kitchen blog. It does add a few minutes (less than five, but it makes such a difference. I’m super excited to try some of these combos!

I was going to say the same thing as Mrs. Blue, peel the chickpeas for smooth hummus! Although I rarely make my own…it’s only marginally cheaper than the stuff I usually buy at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, and I can never get the balance of flavors quite right in my homemade hummus.

Dear Mrs.Chocolate (and all other commenters),
I’ve just gotten into the “hummus business” and I LOVE IT!
But I really could need some advice concerning the best choice of food processor!
Simply putting evertything into normal blender… work. Ish.
It’s a very delicate thing to get to the right point of smoothness, because if it is to dry it only keeps sticking on the wall….
It would be a big help for me if you could share what kind of hardware you are using! Thanks in advance!
