The last time we traveled with Miss H on a plane, she was 8 months old. Now, she’s 18 months old and we’re about to embark on our next plane trip with her, with flights about 3.5 hours each way. Although our previous flying experience with her wasn’t terrible, we’re still a bit scarred from that trip. Miss H was fussy, didn’t want to sit still for that long (4.5 hour flights), and got quite fussy toward the end of our flight back to Chicago (which was also a late afternoon flight that went dark – something she hated!).
However, we have to remember that things were pretty different back then. Miss H was eating some foods but was still primarily breastfed. Which means we could keep her happy with some pouch purees and puffs, but only to a certain extent. And we didn’t bring any bottles on that trip (since I was going to be with her 24/7 I could exclusively nurse on the trip), so we were reliant on me to keep her happy on the flight (i.e. I’m pretty sure my fellow passengers saw a lot of me as Miss H constantly kicked the nursing cover aside).
Going into this next trip, we’re doing our best to anticipate what Miss H’s needs and interests will be. We’re tackling “survive the plane” by doing the following prep.
iPad Practice
Miss H doesn’t get any screen time right now, so she has no real interest in sitting and watching anything on an iPad or the tv. She also currently doesn’t play any iPad games. But, we know for the trip this could be key to keeping her occupied during the flight, so Miss H and I have periodically been sitting together and watching children’s movies on my iPad with her sitting in my lap. The first time we did this she asked me to turn it off within minutes. Now we’re up to about 20 minutes of her being somewhat interested in watching the movie.
We’ve also downloaded some of the apps Mr. Bee has suggested here and here. Miss H has a pretty short attention span for these, but she does absolutely love the “Bubbles” app. It’s very basic and easy for her – tap/swipe the screen to create bubbles, touch them to pop them.
Strategic Flight Timing
We’ve opted to fly early in the morning both ways. Miss H typically naps from 1-3pm. We were fearful of traveling during or near her naptime and have her not be able to fall asleep and then just get terribly upset. By flying in the morning, we’re capitalizing on the time of day where she’s happiest. On our way out, we should land about an hour before her normal nap time, which has me hoping she’ll fall asleep in the car on the way to our final destination.
Buying New Gear
I’ve bought a new book for Miss H that she won’t see until we’re on the plane. We’ll also carry on a few favorites, but we hope she’ll like reading something new. We purchased a kid-friendly iPad case and a pair of kid-friendly headphones (which we’ll try out in advance at home so she gets used to them). We also purchased a cover to go over the home button of the iPad as she’s constantly pushing it! We also bought a sticker activity book, something Miss H is starting to be interested in, and some fun silly bandaids we can play with. We’re hoping all of these things will set us up for interesting activities to hold Miss H’s attention.
Lots of Food
Miss H loves to eat! So we’re going to come prepared. We’ll have a container of O’s cereal, pouches of puree (applesauce is a favorite because it doesn’t stain!), some dried fruit, a banana, some toddler cookies, and mum-mums. We can also buy a wide variety of options in the airport if we need to having anything else with us – string cheese, additional fruit, toast, etc. We will also have Miss H’s sippy cup with us with water in it and can pick up some whole milk at the airport. When we’re at restaurants Miss H gets really antsy in her high chair unless there’s a constant stream of food in front of her, so hopefully it will work the same way on the plane if we get desperate.
And, of course, we’ll be equipped with all of the “usuals” – plenty of extra diapers and wipes, extra change of clothes, Children’s Tylenol, hand wipes, hand sanitizer, extra books, extra toys, stroller for the airport, Miss H’s “lovey,” etc.
While I’m a bit anxious about the trip, I’m also very intrigued to see how this compares with traveling with an infant! Last year it felt like Miss H was so much harder to please and I felt both limited in how we could keep her happy and a lot of pressure to be the one to constantly keep her happy because I was the only one who could nurse her. This time around, Mr. H and I will be able to share the work between the two of us. And, while Miss H can be quite squirmy and always wanting to move, it is also much easier to entice her with special things.
Hopefully all of this prep will serve us well, and I’ll be excited to share how things went following our trip!
Do you have experience flying with an 18 month old? If so, what helped you the most during the flight?

When are you flying or did you already? I think we’re biting the bullet and paying an astronomical price so LO and I can see my family for Thanksgiving. She will be 19 months so I’m interested to see how it goes for you!

We flew with LO at 17 months and it was a challenge. We flew in the morning one way, and that one went well. The return trip was in the evening, at bedtime, which was a disaster… I’m in no hurry to get on a plane again anytime soon!
A tip on the iPad… you can set it to “kid mode”! It’s called Guided Access, it disables the buttons (and touch screen if you want) it’s great to be able to set and hand it off to LO to play. Here’s a link for more info: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5509
Good luck on the trip!

Something no one ever mentions is that a lot of extra snacks can cause upset stomachs, so while it’s great to have snacks, don’t over do it!
I also recommend buying some shelf stable whole milk, so you don’t have to worry about keeping it cold. You can carry on reasonable amounts and I find the Horizon brand ones to be just fine.
Have fun!

We flew home after adopting our oldest he was 17 months and 1 day, not that we were counting. Our first flight was a nice easy short hop and was about 1.5 hours and was the Russian version of Southwest no frills chose your own seat and that went well, I think he was just so shocked to be out of the orphanage that he didn’t know what to do. He was very quiet but then again he was in the orphanage as well.
Then we flew from Moscow to London in business class for a 4 hour trip. That was crazy early in the morning and was so curious as long as he could look around he was happy and not interested in any toys. He charmed all the flight attendants and they gave him extra food
He refused to sleep but had no issues with landing or take offs. Then we had a layover in London and he refused to sleep but he would eat and walk around and play. And the final leg was London to Boston roughly 4.5-5 hour flight again business class. Our flight was delayed and then we boarded and were stuck on the tarmac for about an hour and that was the roughest part. But as long as we stood and held him he was fine. Once we were in the air for about 40 minutes holding him standing he was quite and curious, then he fell asleep and slept for the rest of the flight and didn’t wake up until my DH stood up after we landed.
If you can afford it go for business class, or at the very least buy her own seat just for the room. Flights are so overbooked don’t hope for an empty seat.

@LC: guided access changed my life! she doesn’t get much screen time, but when I want to let her watch a show it is so nice to know she can’t accidentally turn it off or mess with other stuff on my phone.

We flew 10+ hours each way with our 18 month old! Having an extra seat nearby made the trip way more pleasant. We were not so fortunate on the way home.
Also, flying during the day when she was the happiest was a great decision, as you mentioned.
I always board last to let her run around in the gate as much as possible. You might have DH board earlier though because you might need the overhead compartment space and it fills up fast.
For the ipad, make sure you get LO used to using headphones. On the flight home, the flight attendant gave us that etiquette lessons. We improvised and rolled in a sock and put it on her head to make it fit the gap on our big earmuff adult headphones.

DS was 14 months last time we flew, and they were just short 2 hour flights. He couldn’t really play any games on the iPad (even Bubbles didnt amuse him) but he loved looking at our pictures on the iPad (or iPhone), and pushing that button and turning the screen kept him entertained for like 30 minutes at a time. The iPhone was a little easier for him to handle.
DS also loves looking at “real” photographs, so I printed a bunch of recent pictures with his favorite people in them (DH and me, cousins, grandparents, etc) and put it in a brag book. that kept him really happy, we read it just like a book.
while on the trip he played with a Leap Frog “laptop” that I bought for him when we got home. Wish i’d had it for the plane ride, it was a cheap and really portable toy.
good luck! i look forward to hearing how it goes, as DS will be about 18 months on our next trip

Two bags of toys and switch off when she gets bored with one bag. Also, walks up and down the isles. Snacks for sure but make sure you bring ones that will be easy on her belly. Mum mums and puffs were my favorites since they were light and not messy. Do you have a Munchie Mug? I LOVE those things… I have one for each of my kids. They are awesome for cereals, puffs, or anything that is small. And as crummy as some snacks can be it never got all over everything (seat, my bag where I stored it). Food pouches were great for meals. Sleeping was the rough part for me. He had his own seat but yet sat on my lap the ENTIRE 24-hour trip here… I remember having to fly with him when he was 8 months old too earlier this year and nursing… Yep, pretty much everyone on the plane got flashed at one point or another! LOL! Good luck and it sounds like you are well prepared!

These are great tips, especially the one where you save new toys for the flight! The last time I flew with my baby, he was 10-11 months. It was a 7 hour flight, one way. Going there, he was good; coming back, a month older, he was restless and fidgety. We’re flying again when he’s 18 months. The flight will only be 3.5 hours, but he’s so mobile and so much older now that I’m afraid he’s going to be a handful!

We took a trip to Asia when my DD was 18 months old. That’s a lot different than flying domestically, but the key was letting her stretch her legs when it was safe. Back then, we didn’t have an ipad, but we utilized a portable dvd player. Definitely frequent snack breaks of favorite snacks, and even fruits like grapes are great. It gets a little boring eating dried foods and pouces, I think. Good luck!

We flew with DD at both 15m and 18m. We flew during naptime and she napped both legs both trips. When she wasn’t napping, we entertained her with some crayons/paper and snacks.
We didn’t buy her a seat so she just slept on either me or DH’s laps (facing us).

LO is only a month old, but we will be flying for my sister’s wedding when she is about this age, so I’m saving it for future reference.

I found that flying with Mini at 18 months (up to 2 years) was the easiest time frame. Because even the simple things were fun. We always asked for two cups, two lids and a scoop of ice from the attendants because pouring the ice back and forth and shaking the cups was good for long stretches of entertainment. I also had an old wallet I brought stuffed with all sorts of wallet-esque things (old gift cards, paper money, etc) along with ribbons, and a small mirror, buttons etc…) He emptied and refilled that thing for a good forty minutes one trip!
(In case it’s not clear… our guy is tactile and that works better than entertainment for him…)

Our last couple flights with M were pretty rough. The ones before them weren’t horrible.
I tried all the tricks I have read about – the three little pigs toy, snacks, drinks, pouches, tablet. We did not do tablet time leading up to the flight so that might have been part of it but she had no interest in it. We did find some luck with what @Mrs. Paintbrush described above. I had a little wallet that opens at the top. We put some hair elastics and mardi gras beads in there. She did enjoy taking them out and putting them back in again and I didn’t worry if we lost any of those things.
The hardest part was learning that toys were not our friends on these flights. All she wanted to do was throw them. About 10 minutes into the flight, all toys went back into the bag.
Do you have a seat for her or are you flying with her on your lap? The best flights we took with M so far have been on Southwest. We were able to sit in a row of three seats so she had her own seat. If we had to do it again, we would buy another seat or fly Southwest just so we could have that extra space, I think it helped her a lot.

I am prepping for a flight from the US to Kenya in 3 weeks. I have a 20 month old and a 4.5 year old. I did the same trip with my 4.5 year old when she was 19 months old and we survived. She would watch a few videos here and there. I think I have blocked out much of the memory, however, as I was very stressed about the whole situation. I’m hoping we do ok this time around! Enjoying reading about all the tips! The guided access info on the ipad/iphone/ipod is amazing! Didn’t know I could disable areas by circling. That is great!

I fly all the time with DD (18 months) and I only book it on red eyes. I buy her her own seat and install the car seat. She falls asleep for the whole flight and having her in her seat allows me to sleep too. We’ve only done coast to coast flights so at least 5+ hours each way. We’ve never had a bad flight (knock on wood!)

@Mrs. Paintbrush: the wallet is a great idea! I’ll have to try it for our next flight!
We flew last month when our son was 19 months on 4-hour flights. He is a great flyer but he were hoping he would nap both ways (even for 30 minutes) but he didn’t sleep a wink! Thankfully he was in a great mood. Lift-the-flap books, a cheap magnadoodle and the ipad were our saviours. I also packed lots of snacks but he liked the airline snacks the best.
For us, red-eye flights and early morning flights are an absolute no-go. I’d rather he miss a nap than mess with his night sleep in any way.

I flew solo with LO at 18 months to visit my parents. We had one seat for the two of us and survived. She really liked watching all the people and activities, so I tried to save the stuff until she got bored.
A few things that we liked:
-the blog ‘a cup of jo’ recommended a book called ‘airport’ by byron barton. we read it over and over in the weeks before the flight. I think it really helped her prep for what would happen in the airport and on the plane (we have to go through security, we have to sit on the plane and wait etc) and got her excited about the process. We are reading it again to get ready for holiday travel.
-we got a few new books (one for the way there, one for the return) that kept her attention for a while
-we got a magnetic doodle board to practice drawing without the mess of crayons and paper. she enjoyed scribbling and having me write her name so she could erase it. we have this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-M7601-Doodle-Pro-Travel/dp/B0015KU14O/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1383710717&sr=8-5&keywords=fisher+price+magna+doodle
I was really nervous before the flight but she did great. I felt like I did a lot to prep her for success, as you are doing, but at the end of the day it depends on her mood and reactions to things.
Good luck!

@locavore_mama: We just go back, so update to come soon. In short, though, we survived!
@LC: Thanks for the tip! The iPad ended up not being a hit anyway (of course). And I agree – morning flights are the best option!
@808love: 10+ hours? You are my hero!!
@erwoo: mum mums were key on our return flight. I think we got one pack to last almos 45 minutes by breaking into small pieces!
@mediagirl: Yes, the throwing!! We had not anticipated the “angry toddler throwing stuff” scenario. We wisened up for our return flight. Oh and she flew on our laps.
I’m excited to get my blog post written soon about how the trip went, because I was surprised at what ended up working and what went terribly wrong
