The first time I downloaded an app for Chloe, she was a little over a year old. We had taken a trip to DC to visit my sister, and Chloe was bored in our hotel room. I downloaded an app on a whim, and she fell in love with it so much that I bought the extended version. Now she’s just over two, and has a handful of go-to apps that are a lot of fun (and educational) for her.
1. Animals For Toddlers This was the first app I ever downloaded and purchased for her. It has one free scene (a farm) and six additional scenes. Tap the different animals to interact with them and hear their common sound. There are some hidden animals and tricks in each scene!
2. Counting with the Very Hungry Caterpillar I caught this on iTunes when it was free, and it’s a huge hit. There are 5 levels to choose from and they are increasingly challenging. It’s helped Chloe with her counting and memory. She likes to try the harder levels, too!
3. ABC Alphabet Chloe has been playing this app for a few months now, long before her second birthday. It’s been reinforcing the alphabet to her, and is helping her learn the ABCs through sight, sound and touch.
4. Letter Quiz – This was a little advanced for her at first, but in the last few weeks Chloe has actually mastered tracing the alphabet with her fingers. When you’ve completed that task, fireworks shoot across the screen. She looks forward to the fireworks every time, and tells us what each letter is before she traces it. It’s also taught her how to match uppercase and lowercase letters!
5. Toddler Marine Preschool – This free app has six mini games and allows you to control the difficulty of each level, from toddler to kindergartener. Some of the activities are puzzles, matching, colors, matching and counting.
6. Wheels on the Bus This free app is relatively annoying, but it seems to be a huge hit with Chloe. I’ve caught her singing along with the interactive sing-a-long, and she really enjoys the puzzles and coloring.
What apps would you recommend for a toddler?

Fischer Price has a slew of fairly entertaining (and free!) apps. My 17 month old particularly likes one that goes through the alphabet letter by letter with cute illustrations.

My daughter loves all of the apps from Duck Duck Moose, especially Peek a Zoo.

Endless Alphabet. It’s not free, but it is so cute! My daughter has been interested in it for about 8 months now – starting when she was 2 1/2. It also teaches phoentics, with my kindergarten teacher/sister-in-law loves!
