Setting up Lil’ Tea Cup’s nursery was my favorite decorating project that I have ever done. I used to sit in there for hours on end – dreaming of rocking her in the glider and hanging her tiny clothes up – imagining what she would be like. It was and still is my absolute favorite room in our home, and holds so many special memories already.
However, after she arrived, I also realized that I had made some rookie mistakes. I knew about securing photos to the wall, covering outlets and hiding wires, but there are so many things that I just wasn’t considering when I put her room together. This post is all about the things I have learned along the way.
Changing Area – As you can see, Lil’ Tea Cup’s room is not very big. It was because of this that I decided that a buffet was a great way to go in terms of a changing station because it had lots of room for storage. I thought I had hit the jackpot when I found this one at a local antique shop because it was in fairly good shape, was amazingly low priced and fit perfectly into the “changing nook” as I called it. It worked perfectly for the first little while until I realized that I was not always completely prepared when it came to changing my little one. I did not always have all of her clothes( or back up clothes in the case of a diaper disaster ) ready to go and I would have to pick my baby up, carry her to the closet where her clothes were and try to juggle as I grabbed something else for her to wear. It is doable, but if your child is like mine, changing clothes was not her favorite thing and laying down twice made her downright angry. So across the room the changing station went – right next to her closet so I could keep a hand on her and grab whatever we may need. So much easier!
Note: If you look closely in the bottom photo, you’ll notice that the knob on the buffet closest to her crib has been removed. Those knobs were so secure that I could not turn them even using both hands. However, they were no match for toddler fingers. She managed to loosen this knob so much during nap time one afternoon, that I worried she would manage to pull it off completely next time. So off it came. Be mindful of how close your furniture is to a crib because they WILL manage to get things loose.
Location of Regularly Used Items – Before I had a little one I had never used a humidifier. I assumed when we purchased one for Lil’ Tea Cup, we might use it once a month at most. I originally had it placed on the top of the bookshelf in the corner of the room, where it was strictly sat for storage purposes (the slanted ceiling made this spot not possible for actual use). Then I found myself setting this thing up on stacks of books in the middle of the night, taking the lamp off the table to put it on there for nap time etc. It became very apparent that it needed a place where it could stay and be used without moving it. So I moved the bookshelf in front of an outlet and removed the decorative items to replace them with our hardworking humidifier, night light projector and the white noise machine. I call it the “sleep command center.”
Activity Area – When I set up Lil Tea Cup’s room, I pictured sitting on her floor and doing activities with her. I carefully stocked the baskets on her bookshelf with toys and added my favorite piece in the entire room – a giant antique metal bucket – for her stuffed animals. Turns out, we have never actually done it. Lil’ Tea Cup doesn’t really “play” very often in her room. We spend most of our time on the main floor of our house in the living room, so her room is really only used for changing, bed time routine and sleeping. Also that gorgeous metal bucket was removed when she started to walk and tried to carry it. I admit it – Mom fail on my part! Now I stock Lil’ Tea Cup’s book shelf with things we use when we are in here – books! We read before nap time and bed time each day in the glider and I love having them within reach without having to move much. You’ll notice her stuffed animals have been moved to a much more “toddler friendly” bin.
One more note: when you arrange you room make sure you are not comprising function for aesthetics. I loved the glider being by the window but it was right in front of the bookcase in the beginning. Great to look at, such a pain when you are reaching for a book with a baby in your arms.
Storage – This photo makes me laugh when I look at it. I hung up those hooks and thought that they would be enough. As you can see, they clearly were not. We have since added a back of door holder, my diy bow holder and had to move the hooks in order to hang our cloth diaper wet bag on them. You live and learn right?! You can NEVER have enough storage. Don’t worry about an empty basket, drawer or wall, they will fill up in no time!
And just for fun- my favourite part of Lil’ Tea Cup’s room, I wish I could take a nap in there myself!
What things would you change about the way you set up your nursery? What did you live and learn?

Your room (sloped walls and location of closet) looks exactly like my LO’s room! Her dresser is also next to the closet.
We also went through a number of changes with LO’s room. We changed the location of the crib because we couldn’t escape her room without light coming in (the crib faced the door opening). The new changes have worked out well.
I also laugh about the curtains. We have black out blinds but it’s not enough to block the light during the summer (sun down is at 11pm) so we now have these ugly black paper shades that cover up her windows.

Looks great! Ours changed a bit when we moved last summer since her room is now a lot bigger. We had almost the exact same colored walls at our last house as you guys, I miss it!

I love her room! Liam’s room is constantly changing as he grows. I felt the same as you did when I was decorating it – I loved it so much and would sit there a dream about my baby. Now that he is here (and almost 2… eeek!), it is still my favorite room in the house and it is also the cleanest. I will let my clean laundry sit in a pile in the basket for weeks, but I always fold and hang his clothes right away.

This is so funny. We changed things too, especially all the shelves and decorative stuff over the changing table – worst idea ever.

Not too much changed, I moved the crib away from the window wall because it was colder along that wall and when we brought DS1 home with us he was always so cold. We still fight this battle when he has a growth spurt he always is so cold. When he went to a toddler bed it was in the same position as the crib, a direct swap out furniture wise.
When DS2 joined him in the room he had already been bounced around a lot. He started in a cradle in our room, then his own crib in the guest bedroom, and finally in with DS1. We took out the rocking chair now that part of the night time ritual is done in our room. We had to move DS1’s bed, was one side flush to the long wall in the room. So we turned it 90 degrees so it and DS2’s crib are perpendicular to that long wall. We moved the changing table (my Dad made) it between the two beds and this served two purposes.
1- allowed us to put the humidifier between the two bed and the cord would be blocked by the dressing table.
2- it provided the minimum visual barrier we needed between the boys so they wouldn’t play too much peek a boo rather than sleeping. It is open shelving with thin dowels so we put stuffed animals on that shelf as the visual barrier.
It has been interesting going from one to two in that room. I think there may be more headaches in store when the boys are going to bed at the same time rather than their current staggered times.
Where the changing table was, we anchored an IKEA dresser for DS2 to the wall and put the changing pad on top. It is a bit of a pain for me since I am short, it is doable but not as nice as the changing table. Now that we are down to one in diapers it is better.

@Mrs.Maven: We want to move our kids into the same room soon (as soon as we’re done breastfeeding!), when you have staggered bedtimes with them sharing a room, does it disrupt/wake the one with the earlier bedtime up?

I love your nursery. We haven’t moved much around yet, but I’m sure we will. We only use it for playing a few times a week because I am too lazy to go upstairs for diaper changes and clothes when she is still in our room. I also haven’t “finished” the nursery, and LO is 3 months.

@Mrs.High Heels both of my boys once asleep are very deep sleepers. The little one is in bed roughly 7 PM and asleep within minutes (the older one was like this too). And the older one is in bed at roughly 7:30 PM, unfortunately he doesn’t go right to sleep like he used to do. I am not sure what changed, but we are not putting him to bed too early based on his behavior he just fights it now but he is generally quiet and he knows if he needs something he doesn’t have to say much since we have the monitor we will come check on him.
The little one used to get up for a 2 or 3 am feed when we had them in the same room and didn’t wake up his older brother. And now he sleeps through the night, but he does get up early. If it is too early (4 AM) we just pick him up and move him to the pack n play in the guest room we don’t get up with him. Otherwise he is up generally earliest (acceptable time) is 5:15 and 5:45. Most days he is up around 5:30 which we need because we have to give him a nebulizer treatment in the morning and to fit in the schedule before we leave for the day it has to be done then. The older one sleeps through it and the antics of his brother in the kitchen after the treatment and gets up around 6:15 when we go in to get the little one dressed.

I’m glad I’m not the only one! Miss H’s nursery has changed by leaps and bounds since we first decorated it. A table was replaced with a bookcase/toy organizer (we grossly underestimated how many toys we would have!). I’m also embarrassed to admit that we didn’t have a clothes hamper for her in the room.
We also had to move the monitor higher to be able to see into the crib once we lowered her mattress… all kinds of things have changed! It’s amazing what you learn once your LO is actually living in the space!

I absolutely love the before and after! I think so many moms go through so much designing their nurseries, and having to change later can feel like you’re almost throwing all your work and vision away. But if they can read tips like this from a mom who’s been through it, they can more carefully plan what might work best! like keeping all clothes near the changing table, and keeping the glider next to the bookshelf.
Our nursery is very simple, and all the large pieces have moved around quite a bit. But the biggest part is that our nightstand, situated right next to our glider, serves many purposes… it holds the lamp, a box of tissues, her comb and brush set, and one photo in a frame. Then the two drawers hold our nighttime books, burp cloths, and all kinds of bits and pieces. So everything we need for nap and bedtime are right within reach.

I moved our chair and changing table when we moved from cradle to crib because the chair was cramped when we brought the much larger crib in. I moved all his books lower too so they’re at his height now. His whole room could use a good mucking out though, I suppose it’s time to face the sad fact that he’s getting bigger and pack away the baby stuff

the before and after are both gorgeous, you have great taste! My girls room has changed so many times I can’t even keep count in the past three years… I love moving it around though and keeping the girls environment a bit fresh and different. I also purchased a buffet as a change table!! And I love it! It has been so awesome one of my favorite pieces.

@Freckles: I should have mentioned that before I went and bought the blackout curtains, we had cardboard up there and a big heavy wool blanket ha ha ! The things we will do to get these little people to sleep!
@Mrs. Lion, @MrsMcD, @Bao, @Mrs. Chipmunk: Thank you
@Mrs. Deer – I start thinking about her “big girl” room sometimes and get sad over changing the colour!
@mrs. tictactoe: I do the same thing! Her room is the cleanest in the house BY FAR!
@Mrs. Confetti: oh the decorative stuff was so important to me, until a minute after she arrived lol!
@Mrs.Maven: I need to bookmark your comment for when I have another lo one day!
@kuhlsarse: amen!

I really hope someone is helped by this post!
@Mrs. Stroller: I wont even tell you what happened when I put away her clothes…I was a DISASTER! Little socks in a store still make me weep ha ha!
@Mrs. Palette: Thanks so much. Buffets are the way to go! We have 3 in our house now, my husband says I have an addiction!
Also to those who asked:
Paint colour – I don’t know the name sadly but I will do some investigating and try to get it to you as soon as possible.
Prints on the wall – Most of the prints are Katie Daisy which you can find on Etsy here : https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/thewheatfield
or ones that I have made myself from greeting cards and other things

I both appreciate AND regret that we bed-shared and so Lorelei never used her room until she was around a year old. It’s really interesting to see all the changes and hear the reasons behind them– amazing all the things you just don’t think about until you are in the thick of things! Her room is so bright and cheerful. You can come decorate my house any time– I’m horrid at that stuff.

Beautiful room! We had to completely redo the rooms as they grew. At one point they had nothing in there but mattresses, all dressers and furniture were removed.
so much for cute bedrooms.
