Registries can be so overwhelming, and there is so much you have to get when you have a new baby on the way! Now that we are through the “infant” stage with Little Lion, we have been able to get a feel for what we really needed and what we didn’t. There are quite a few things that were used very short term and have been filed away for next time already, and LOTS that have been taken to our local children’s consignment stores to be sold. While most of these things were nice to have (even if they were short lived) we really could have gone without them.
2. Dishwasher Basket – Since we don’t have many bottles, we don’t wash them in the dishwasher. We have one of these and it has not been used once.
3. Extra Crib Sheets – We really only need 2 of these, so that we can rotate while one is being washed.
4. Bumbo – We hardly used this at all. It was nice to take when we went camping so that LL had a place to sit and didn’t have to lay on the hard ground…but we didn’t use it much at home. LL has always wanted to be able to wiggle, and he didn’t like being contained.
5. Bouncy Seat – We ended up not using this at all once we purchased a swing. We did save it in case our next baby happens to like it better, but we could have done without for sure if we had gotten the swing in the first place.
6. Jumper – Unfortunately, LL’s legs were too short to use this jumper. By the time he was tall/heavy enough to actually touch the ground, he was standing on his own, and then shortly later he was walking. I suppose it may still be fun for him to try even though he is mobile, but we definitely could have done without it. We got this as a compromise when we decided not to get an exersaucer or jumperoo, but really we didn’t need any of them. LL has always been more content to move on his own.
7. Sleep Sacks – Once LL was free of the swaddle, he became mobile pretty quickly. He never liked the sleep sacks (I think they got in his way when he was trying to roll). Since he has been old enough to roll front to back and back to front, we have let him sleep with a blanket instead. We have two of the Halo sleep sacks, which are very nice, but we just never really needed them.
8. Extra Receiving Blankets – I think we got as many of these as we did bibs! Everyone loves to buy super soft blankets for babies, but we have far more than we will ever use. Skip the receiving blankets altogether. We ended up needing 3-4 blankets for swaddling, 3 blankets for warmth (I like to keep one in the car, one in the crib and one in the stroller), and one to lay on the floor or ground outside.
9. Reclining High Chair – We didn’t use any of the reclining features of our high chair, and we have never used the cloth cover (we took it off and stored it so we could easily wipe down the seat). I wish we had skipped the high chair altogether and gotten this booster seat instead. They serve the same purpose, but the booster looks to be easier to clean and is a lot cheaper.
10. Boppy Pillow – This was helpful when I was nursing, but only for about a week until I got the hang of it. I found myself using regular pillows from the couch or bed instead anyway, and it was never used after that. Totally could have skipped this one, and I am glad we got ours used for $5!
11. Extra Bottles – LL has been exclusively bottle fed since he was 4 months old, and we have been perfectly fine with only having 1 4oz bottle and 3 8oz bottles. Since I am at home with him, I take 30 seconds to wash them after we use them.
12. Extra Clothes – We could have gotten by with far fewer clothes than we actually have. 6-7 tops, 3-4 pairs of pants and 5 sleepers in each size, plus weather appropriate gear and socks (and shoes once he started walking) were really all we needed.
What baby items could you have lived without?

I agree about the bibs and the dishwasher basket. We never used that basket ONE single time! I just got in the habit of washing bottles and never got out of it! I agree about the high chair too. We also took the cloth off because I was always putting it in the laundry anyway. haha!
I’ll keep him in them for as long as possible!
Although I totally disagree about the sleep sacks. LP is still in his at 21 months and I’m convinced it’s helping to keep him from climbing out of his crib in addition to keeping him warm.

It’s funny how different babies can be!
Some of these would be on my necessities list. My bub is not a spitter-upper, but her drools (especially when teething) are epic. There have been days when she’s on her 3rd bib before noon. I actually had to go out and get more bibs because of how fast we’d go through them.
For me, a bouncy seat was the only way I’d be able to do dishes or wash the floors or take a shower. Our bouncy seat gave me so much freedom!

I agree with a lot of these! The bibs were useless until solids, and then we did the same and bought wipe-able ones! Ditto again on the extra crib sheets, Bumbo, dishwasher basket, and receiving blankets. I used my A&A swaddle blankets for everything, and almost never used the receiving ones.
I couldn’t have lived without extra bottles and my boppy though!
pomegranate / 3768 posts
I agree with the bumbo. We bought something similar, bebepod, for when she was starting solids but she only used it for a month or so.
I love the boppy and sleep sack though. DD is 14 months and still uses both every day!

someone handed down their bottle dishwasher basket and the second i saw it i knew i wasn’t going to use it. i also bought too many bottles, thinking that one of them would be the perfect one to get rid of LO’s gas–WRONG! also agreed on the boppy–unfortunately we didn’t get that much use out of it.
we have way too many swaddles. i wish i had heard of the woombie sooner–when we tried that, there was no going back.

It’s funny how different babies and families are! There are so many things on here that I think are must haves, like the bib, dishwasher baskets, extra bottles, & extra crib sheets. We had very spit-up babies, and we went through many, many, many bibs, clothes, sheets, etc. per day in the first few months. Since we both WOH, extra bottles (and the baskets-we use Dr. Browns, and I have no idea how we would keep up with all the extra parts without that) were a necessity since we couldn’t wash throughout the day.
Totally agree on the blankets, reclining high chair, boppy, and bouncy. We were blessed to receive a lot of special blankets and quilts, and I have a hard time using all of them, much less the generic receiving blankets.

@Mrs. Blue: @Ellie: It is amazing how lifestyle plays so much into what gear is “needed” versus “not needed”. We thought we purchased only the things we needed based on input from friends and lots of reading online, but we were still surprised that there were so many things that didn’t get used. I love seeing what other people needed and didn’t need.

Wow this list had a lot of my “must haves”!
1. Dishwasher basket. When we were washing pump parts and bottle parts nightly, this basket was great for all the loose end pieces. In fact, we ended up buying a second one so that one basket could hold the drying objects while the next basket went in to hold the next round of dirty stuff.
2. Boppy – We loved ours!
pomegranate / 3779 posts
I too registered for a bunch of stuff that we ended up not needing – I think you never know what’s going to work until you get there. We use a ton of bibs because LO drools so much and I go through a lot of the flannel blankets because I use them to mop of drool, spit up, and to catch any drips during BF. We received a ton of heavier blankets (at least 12!) that were hand made or embroidered with the name and I struggle to use here because it’s just not cold.

I couldn’t have lived without Bibs (we have to buy a ton), boppy, bouncer (4+months she tolerated it), and sleep sacks.
We haven’t used the dishwasher basket (I just wash the bottles), Bumbo type seat was hardly used at all, and a swing, she hated it. I agree with crib sheets. We have 4 but I used one and over again, I went and bought another one. She liked it better and the others were so hard getting on and off.

So many things you just don’t know how they will work out until you use them. Every family and baby is so different!
For us, we didn’t need many bibs because both kids were not big droolers. We also didn’t use our dishwasher basket. Other things we could have lived without were the jumperoo and receiving blankets.
But I couldn’t have lived without a bouncer for both kids, and I used my boppy for over 2 years! We still use it as a pillow haha. And of course I looooove sleep sacks! One of the best inventions ever.

Thinking about what we didn’t use, a swing was one. I sold it when my LO was 3 months old, and I don’t think she’d used it for a few weeks before then. She hated it.
We received a bunch of thick blankets, many of which I returned. Oh, and mobiles- we received a few mobiles and I returned them all because LO was in a bassinette, then PnP before she moved to the crib and by then she didn’t need one to get to sleep.
And sadly, bottles and a very expensive pump. My boobs didn’t cooperate with my plan to be able to pump and bottle feed BM, unfortunately.
We didn’t have a shower, so many family and friends were very generous once the baby was born and gave us gifts then – but unfortunately we didn’t have a registry so we received a lot of gift-repeats.

We definitely could have lived without bibs! I have a million of the infant ones and I may have put them on her a handful of times. Oh well.

It’s so amazing how babies can be so different! #’s 1,2,5,7,8,10,11 were all must haves for us! The bouncy seat was a lifesaver for me, M loved the vibrate feature and I still use the dishwasher basket today for cup parts – straws and tops, as well as for my silicone muffin cups.

Too many bibs (but most were hand me downs so not a huge issue) a few too many sheets and didn’t need the bumbo.
I thought I had too many blankets since my LO wasn’t into them, but now he is 20 months he LOVES blankets. Mostly putting them in his mouth and walking around, kind of like a dog with a bone. He doesn’t do that with other fabric just blankets. He is not particular about one (which is good) he does have two special sleep blankets. But the receiving blankets, he carries those around and it is nice especially when he is sick to have so many to just toss in the wash and hand him a new one.
And well the boppy, he never latched so he was bottle fed both breast milk (pumped for 9 months) and formula. But one night when I was really congested and I tried to stay propped up in bed for better breathing my head kept rolling side to side, I got the boppy and it is like a huge travel pillow people use on the planes it was fantastic. It is now MY pillow, I am a side sleeper and just love it.

I love this post! We have a 4-week old LO so we are just now figuring out what was worth the money vs. what definitely wasn’t. He is exclusively breastfed so I can see how bottle vs. breast would make a difference in what is necessary but generally for us so far in the newborn stage…
Necessary: Burp rags (so many burp rags), Aden & Anais swaddle blankets (4-5), nightgown pajamas with the open bottom (easy access for changing midnight diapers), warm and soft blankets (3-4), baby Aquaphor (cured all of his rashes/scratches/etc.), Medela Tender Care Lanolin (THE BEST THING EVER for mommy), baby lavender lotion for bedtime routine, warm JJ Cole car seat cover, baby swing, humidifier (dry winter months), bath water thermometer.
Unnecessary: Bibs, receiving blankets (why?! and we have SO many), mittens (they just fall off), crib shoes (such a hassle, we just put him in socks), newborn outfits (he was in 3 month clothes at 2 weeks!), tons of warm blankets/quilts (we were given so many of these and we only use about 3 of them), regular baby lotion and baby powder (apparently we were out of the loop that baby powder is essentially bad for babies because it can coat their lungs with talcum powder and can be dangerous – no thanks!), lots of bottles, glider (we don’t use it as much as we thought we would), extra crib sheets, baby towels (really just for cuteness, our towels would work just as well), baby robes (also… cutness only), co-sleeper basinette for in our bed (takes up the entire bed and can’t use because of acid reflux), boppy pillow (like you said, regular pillows become the norm).
I wish someone had told me these things before we purchased our baby items! I’m sure this post will help many many mommies-to-be so thank you! I love HelloBee!

This is such a tough thing to do though, because for just about everything where I said I didn’t really need it some will will swear by it. Which is how we ended up with a bumbo by the way, it worked great for 3 of 4 of my SIL’s kids. She never had it for the oldest they were not a “thing” then.
I hated the thought of registering I didn’t want to think about what I would need and thinking about how many I needed was just daunting. I outsourced
I told my sister I was dragging my feet and didn’t want to do it, she said it was her favorite thing, so I set up my registry and gave her the info and she went and registered for me. I went online and deleted a few things or changed colors, added one or two things but 98% was all her.
@ally save the baby powder it keeps and when they are older and playing in the sand box it is great. Put a little powder in you hand and rub it against their arms and legs and the sand falls right off.

Every kid is different, even your own. With DS I only used the bouncer when I showered and had him in the bathroom with me otherwise he lived in his swing but with DD she has loved the bouncer since she was small and still does but has never cared as much for the swing Its a good reminder I think that all kids are individuals in the end with their own unique preferences!

When I first started looking at your list, I agreed, but now have changed my mind. I agree with you about bibs, bouncer seat, crib sheets and bottles. So many of these are inexpensive, so it makes sense to wait to see if you need it. The boppy and bumbo I used a lot. LO loves to sit (by.herself) and those were indispensible. The jumper goes with that independance thing. She loves standing by herself. I was going to agree with the blankets. I groaned every time i got a new one. But we moved her play area to under the window and it is a cold floor. I piled up all those baby blankets and now it’s toasty.

I love seeing these posts because everyone is so different. I went out and got double of some of these things.
Crib sheets: My LO didn’t spit up but I needed 4 crib sheets, 2 for home and 2 for daycare. I guess I didn’t need them but I like to prep LO’s daycare bag Friday afternoon for Monday morning so I like to pull out the dirty sheet & blanket and replace it with a clean one at the same time. If I waited until Sunday night/Monday morning I would never remember.
Boppy: I have a long torso and small boobs so I used 2 stacked and a pillow early on. They were hand me downs so I probably wouldn’t have bought them full price but LO turns 1 this weekend and I still use both every day.
Dish basket: Two of these as well. Between pump parts and bottles and now utensils there are a lot of parts to wash. DH likes to cram one basket absolutely full but I don’t think everything gets really clean that way.
We didn’t use/could easily live without: bouncer seat, co-sleeper side car (maybe 20 minutes of use total, all screaming), exersaucer, million receiving blankets, extra clothes, mittens, shoes (she’s size 5.5 and still not walking), baby socks (LO was born with huge feet and went straight to 12-24 month socks at birth), headbands, jumper.

totally agree with your list. Our boppy was completely useless after four months. I think for baby #2 it might not be necessary at all. The others on your list we had bypassed. This post makes me feel better about not having bought any of those items. You never know what you are suppose to “really” do.

You might want to rethink the 2 crib sheets if your child gets the stomach flu. I have used 3 sheets in 1 night before

We also have a zillion more bibs and blankets than we could ever need.
grapefruit / 4862 posts
I agree with a lot of these but I was the opposite on bibs. I thought “why would I need so many?” when a friend gave me all her old ones. Like, we’re talking 30 of them. And guess what? LO is the DROOLIEST BABY EVER. Like she has to wear one all the time except sleeping because of her drool. She occasionally spits up but pretty much has 3+ bib changes daily on a good day just from drool. I figure let people buy them for you, keep them not washed, and then if you need them use them, if not, return them or consign them!
The blankets though… woof. SO MANY.

Interesting. We never used a burp cloth but used our receiving blankets for this purpose. At one year we still use sleep sacks because they don’t know what to do with blankets-they always wind up at the opposite end of the crib!

I was glad we didn’t buy a Bumbo – we borrowed one from a friend, and it was great to be able to return it to her when we were done with it!
We were on the other end of things where we didn’t have a lot of extra stuff – basically just what we needed to get by (although I still feel like we have/had SO MUCH and it feels like baby clothes just multiply!). For us, not sharing the gender I think helped cut down on random stuff at our showers (if people dont’ know the gender, they’re less likely to go overboard on cutesy stuff, I feel like).

The bouncy chair thing is why I have a bouncer/swing combo. I didn’t want too much stuff but I wanted to accomodate whatever LO’s preference will be.

I have two dishwasher baskets and we don’t wash any of the bottle or pump parts in the dishwasher, but I now use them for storing in the cabinet and they are pretty handy.
I would have agreed with you on the bibs when DS was an infant (he was super drooly, but we just changed his shirt a lot) but once he started feeding himself, especially once he was using a spoon, we started using them a lot. One of the activities at my baby shower was decorating bibs, and now all 30+ of them are super faded from zillions of washes.
Crib sheets – totally agree that you may want more with the stomach flu. Also, DS usually only poops while sleeping and they are huge, we get a lot of leaks, so we typically change the crib sheet twice a day, morning and after nap. There have been plenty of times when we’ve had to improvise by putting a regular sheet over his crib with a towel underneath to protect the mattress.
As for the Bumbo, we were never that into ours either. I have heard from friends that they used it a lot with their second and later kids, which makes sense.

we got a million bibs that i scoffed at, but now that we’re doing BLW i go through 3 bibs a day and i get to the bottom of my stash pretty quickly before laundry day

My daughter was a preemie and the development peds encouraged us NOT to use a jumper. They said it would make her a tip toe walker.

This is so crazy to me! Literally most of this list has been essential for us! I kind of wish you would put a disclaimer because I would hate for a pregnant mom to not register for some of this stuff & end up needing it! It’s wild how different babies can be.
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
@daniellemybelle: I think it nothing else the comments on this post have shown how very different babies can be. I am only sharing my experience. I personally wish I had less to start with and had then purchase things as we needed them…hindsight is 20/20 of course
but we would have saved a whole lot of money!

I agree with the bumbo! We bought one used and she used it fir like 2 seconds before she started sitting on her own! We actually used the recline feature on our high chair A LOT. especially when she first started holding her bottle on her own! I also used my Boppy daily until we stopped nursing…loved it!

Sleep sacks were a must for us but I agree with the dishwasher basket, and we got tons of bibs too and never really used them until she was older, which then we got the ones that wipe easily so all the cutesy cotton ones did us no good.
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
Lots of those were REALLY helpful for us! We use the dishwasher basket now to wash straw cup parts and definitely used it for bottles and pacis. Sleep sacks have been a good part of our bedtime routine since the second month and LO kicks off blankets. I agree about extra crib sheets but I say you need at least one extra.
Ones I agree with are the bumbo and the bouncy chair!
Interesting reading everyone’s opinions!
