I’m going to devote two posts in this series on what I wish I knew to save a bit of money in a cloth diaper investment.

Black Friday diaper sales are probably the most cost effective way of building up a diaper stash, especially if you go the brand name route. A lot of brand names have great resale value, whether the prints are limited edition or not. The big companies usually have the same sale at almost all retailers – this past year GroVia diapers were buy 2, get 1 free, and bumGenius diapers were buy 5, get 1 free. Many retailers have at least 15-20% off almost all their inventory, and many throw in a bonus item, like a free diaper, for orders from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday. Dirty Diaper Laundry always has a long list of online stores, big and small, and what their sales are. You can also do a google search for “black friday cloth diaper sales” and several other websites will also have listings of the deals to be had.
This year I scored 3 Diaper Safari pocket diapers for $9 with their 3 for $10 sale that they allowed you to combine with their 10% off sale and free shipping. That’s $3 each! In fact, throughout the year diapersafari.com has great sales on their diapers; I’ve seen several buy one get one free deals that you can keep up to date with on their facebook page.
Following online diaper shops on facebook gives you the inside scoop on flash sales, and many frequent giveaways just for leaving facebook comments. Here are a few shops to check out:
I went the Amazon.com route for most of my diapers, because it was just easier from a registry perspective, but a lot of these small shops offer points that go towards free items, they will usually offer 15-30 day trials, and some have registry options and stock more items that just diapers. If you have a local brick and mortar shop in your area though, I would strongly encourage you to support them, especially if you are just starting out – many offer great 101 classes. Very likely they will also have an online storefront to stay in business and will have a facebook page and sales, too, so all the more reason to “go local.”

Big brands generally have good resale value – bumGenius, for instance, will run about $17 new, and can be sold when you’re done for $12+. An initial look at all the cloth diaper options will make it seem like most of your stash will end up being solid colors, but there are prints to be found! One of the drawbacks to the tried and true bumGenius diapers are that most of the color options have traditionally been pastels, and pastels aren’t for everyone. Lately they’ve come up with some cute designs and have ventured into some jewel tones. Some people cloth diaper because, let’s face it, the prints can be pretty darn cute. I did a round up of some limited edition prints of off the beaten path diapers in my last diaper post, which can sometimes have profitable resale value. Here I’ll feature some prints from the big brands. Some are more “limited edition” than others, while some companies still have prints available from previous years’ releases. I love this pirate themed diaper, “Jules,” by bumGenius. It’s pretty hard to come by right now and is fetching a fair price on eBay. My friend, Mrs. Argentina, and I always joke about the “Irwin” diaper, because we called it the dinosaur diaper, but then we realized there were all kinds of animals on it that had nothing to do with dinosaurs. I later realized it was made in tribute to the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin.
My next post will focus on investing in cheaper brands.
Do you have any favorite diaper prints in your stash? What kind of deals have you been able to get?

I love all the prints!
I would also add checking out the cottonbabies.com website for their seconds sales, they have brand new diapers with flaws so they can’t sell them as new. I bought BG 4.0’s for around $11/diaper they don’t come with inserts but you can buy them separately on their website. I looked very carefully at the diapers and could never find any flaws compared to the ones I bought new!
Also at my local store they have a “used bin” where I have been able to find deeply discounted diapers, inserts and trainers. Most of them are like-new, I think returns from their diaper trial program.

I found some owl print Swaddlebees Simplex OS AIOs listed on Amazon for around $12.50 each. They were out of stock, so I had to wait several weeks, but it ended up being a great deal. They are my favorite diapers and run about $26 new. I bought 6 and wish I’d purchased more!
I also have BG Elementals (Original) and BG Freetimes… I like them both but not as much.
I love the Jules and Irwin prints… maybe I will look for them!

I love Bumgenius cloth diapers! Nice to see that they came out with so many new prints, but when I had them it was all pastels.

We love our Bumgenius diapers and we own about half of the BG prints that are in your diagram! We have about 1/3 pastels, 1/3 jewel tones, and 1/3 prints.

I love love love rumparooz and I really want the Charlie print. But alas, our stash is complete…and our budget doesn’t allow for buying more just because they are adorable
Maybe if I have a girl next time…might trade some of my boy prints for girly ones
Thanks for the info!!

I can attest to the wonderful resale value of Bumgenius diapers. I had a bunch of original elementals that I destashed for basically what I paid (I didn’t feel right charging more even though I knew the going rate was higher. They were used after all.).
We use a lot of hybrid fitteds, but I for waterproof options, I really like the way Charlie Banana diapers fit DD. I was able to score a bunch on clearance at Target for $43/set of 6.

As a loyal reader and a former member of the bumGenius marketing team, I live this post. Just wanted to add one thing, the Chelsea Perry Artist Series was first introduced in October 2010. http://www.cottonbabies.com/blog/2010/10/bumgenius-artist-series-tiny-socialite-collection-by-chelsea-perry.html It is a day I remember well. The first time bumGenius offered any prints!

I love our BumGenius, but I like the brand “Just Simply Baby” just as much and they tend to run around $10 a diaper, so that’s what we’ll do next time (whenever that may be).

I love all these prints. There weren’t really any when we started though, boo. I wish I hadn’t bought so many. I don’t even have room to store them all. Ugh. Time to sell, sell, sell. I keep thinking if we have #2 that maybe a different brand might work better than another so I’ve hesitated to sell. Ridiculous when I could sell and buy such cool prints!

@mrs. pinata – those JSB diapers look exactly like “rebranded Alvas” – which go for about $6 each, and wholesale for probably $0.99 each. I’m doing another post on rebranded Alvas soon.

I’m contemplating cloth diapers if I’m home more if/when we have another one, so this is really helpful!

I love all the new patterns. Maybe I should consider doing cloth again in the future
