I’ve only worn high heels 3 times in the past 4 years — twice for a wedding and once for a charity event — so it was easy for me to get rid of almost all my high heels recently. Lately I’ve been paring down my shoe collection even more to only keep the shoes that I truly wear regularly. I loved when Kristin shared how she pared down her shoe wardrobe to 11 pairs of shoes. But since I live in a walking city with four seasons, I also included a couple of cold weather options. Considering that I dress casually most of the time, I came up with my 15 shoe essentials. 15 still sounds like a lot to me, but I guess it’s easy to hold onto shoes because they always fit!
1) Workout Sneakers – Preferably in a fun color to make working out more fun! I haven’t worked out since Charlie was born, but I’m hoping to start again soon!
2) Wedge Sneakers – You might love them or hate them (Brandy wrote a post about them here), but I love to have a heel on when I’m going out since I’m short. There’s no way I can wear regular heels with how much walking you have to do in New York, but wedge sneakers are so comfortable. I have no problem taking public transportation and wearing them all night out.
3) Walking Sneakers – Brandy wrote a great post on how to wear sneakers stylishly, and it definitely made me step up my sneaker game. I debated between these black and burgundy New Balance, but black won out in the end since it’s more versatile. My Converse just weren’t comfortable for my wider foot, otherwise you really can’t go wrong with classic chucks!
4) Flip Flops – If it’s warm enough, I’m usually in flip flops. My good old Havianas have lasted me forever!
5) Leopard Flats – I love leopard flats! They really feel like a neutral that goes with everything and you don’t have to spend a lot on them… these are from Target!
6) Colorful Flats – Bright, colorful flats are a great way to spice up an otherwise neutral outfit.
7) Oxfords – I love the casual, cool, tomboy look of oxfords and how you can dress them up or down. You could also opt for moccasins instead.
8) Black Pumps – I find that black pumps are a necessity in my closet (even if I rarely wear them) for special events or work functions, and they go great with my little black dress.
9) Gold Strappy Heels – These are also an essential neutral in my book when I wear cocktail dresses to events or weddings.
10) Strappy Sandals – I love strappy sandals because they can dress up a summer outfit when flip flops are just too casual.
11) Brown Knee High Boots – A classic wardrobe staple that can be dressed up or dressed down.
12) Ankle Boots – I find ankle boots to more versatile than regular boots because they can be worn year round. Sometimes I have trouble with boots being too narrow in the foot, but this pair from Sam Edelman fit perfectly.
13) Uggs – Love them or hate them, for me Uggs are an absolute mom essential! We have cold weather 6 months out of the year, and doing school drop-offs in Uggs not only keeps my feet warm and comfy, I don’t have to worry about putting on socks. One less step in the mornings makes a big difference!
14) Wellies – I often wear wellies when there’s snow outside because they’re so fast to slip on. I have a pair of knee-high Hunters, but I think for my next pair I’ll go with a mid-calf height as that is probably more comfortable for petite people.
15) Snow Boots – I’ve lived in New York for 10 years without snow boots, but this crazy winter showed me that when you need snow boots, you really can’t live without them. The streets get so slushy that it’s impossible to walk anywhere without getting your feet soaked.
So these are my 15 mom shoe essentials. I haven’t pared down to 15 yet (I still have some more boots and ballet flats), but I’m getting there. What are your mom shoe essentials?

Most days I can be caught in simple ballet-style flats [in various shades}.
But during the hot hot summer this Texas Mommy LOVES her sandals.
-flat strappy sandals
-wedge heel sandals
-dressy flipflops & casual flipflops
For fall/winter {hardly a difference here in the South} I have a pair of Over-the-Knee Brown Boots that I just adore.
I also love, love my Cowgirl boots. {I am in Texas after all! ;)}
And I’m a runner… so I always have at least 2 pairs of runners lying around too.

@Mrs. High Heels: what are rainbows?
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@Mrs. Bee: really comfortable, popular leather sandals/flipflops – http://www.rainbowsandals.com/products-all/women's/sandals/leather – I don’t know anyone in cali that doesn’t own a pair of these (men and women). They mold and conform to your feet and last for years and years!

I’m in SoCal so I feel like I just need more sandals, both casual and dressy. I work in a bungalow and need dressy sandal options for when it’s 90 degrees. I’m a Reef girl, no rainbows for me, but they are definitely popular.

These are all cute! My essentials tend to be flats, heels, sandals and warm boots in both black and brown. Not too exciting, but all pretty neutral. I also have silver sandals (similar to your gold) for summer weddings, and probably some more sandals that I can’t remember since it must have been at least 6 months since I’ve worn them. I also had some Sperry’s look-alikes, but I wore them to death in the fall. And of course, work-out shoes.
Not that those get worn as often as they should! I’d really like some Wellies though! I’m hoping that spring is coming though and that I won’t need them until next season.

My musts are:
2-3 heels for work, including a basic pump (mine is in nude but I would like to get a black pair as well)
Flip flops
Pumas
running shoes (I have asics and they’ve served me well)
2-3 pairs of flats – great for work and casual errands in spring/summer. Loft has been my favorite for flats thus far.
2-3 pairs of boots – I have several.
Winter boots – this is on my list. I live in MN and don’t own a pair!
Converse – because they’re comfortable, stylish and basic. I have a fun yellow pair
I guess I’m fine with a big shoe collection – but I’m picky about the fit and comfort of my shoes. If they aren’t comfortable, I won’t wear them enough.

I don’t have many shoes, because I’ve never really been that interested in them. This is what I’ve got:
For winter:
-snow boots (mine are Sorel’s)
-Wellies (my Hunter’s broke, so now I have Chooka)
-neutral tall boots with a small heel (I had gray, now I have black)
-brown slip on wedges (mine are Naturalizer-love!)
-comfy slippers (I love my Ugg slippers!)
For summer:
-a fun pair of ballet flats (last summer’s was blue and white striped)
-flip flops (right now, mine are Old Navy, but I’d love Rainbows)
-one nice pair of strappy summer sandals (I get-then kill-a new pair every year)
For anytime:
– running shoes
-old pair of running shoes for going outside and playing
-Oxfords (just got these for Christmas-haven’t worn them much yet)
-tan paten leather pumps
-silver heels from a wedding last summer
In the winter, I pretty much wear boots all the time, since it is so icy and snowy. This spring, I’ll also be wearing the heck out of my wellies with all of the melting snow! This summer, I’d like to upgrade to Rainbows and get a good pair of boat shoes, like Sperries, and a pair of good outdoor sandals, like Keen’s.
Guess I have more shoes than I thought I did-that’s 13 pairs!

@Mrs. Pen: I agree-comfort above all else!

@Mrs. High Heels: I love my rainbows!!! But I wore them thru my first pregnancy and they got way too stretched out for when my feet returned back to normal size
I need a new pair!!
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
Want those brown knee high boots SO bad.
Right now here are my essentials:
Short snow boots
Short rain boots
Knee high Uggs (I have a more formal looking pair that zips up)
Knee high black leather boots
Moccassins
Toms (I have one cooler weather pair and one warmer weather pair)
Flip flops (I have so many pairs, this is EASILY a place I could pare down)
Athletic sneakers
Black flats
Nude flats
Black heels
Nude heels
Strappy sandals
Crap, that’s 14 types of shoes, and I have several of many of those. Time to clean out the shoe rack!! And stop buying shoes!! Although I desperately want knee high brown boots.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I think I could get down to 10 pairs, it’s all I ever really wear in a year anyway!
Tall leather boots, in black, brown or two tone riding
Snow boots
Rain boots
athletic sneakers
converse, Jack Purcell
black leather pumps
brown sandals with a small wedge for work, this year, leather with neon edging
black leather sandals for work, this year, black patent and fabric
Keens, for all purpose playing around with my son and water activities
Crocs, fleece lined, for house shoes/slippers

I would love to say that this post made me want to pare my shoe collection down to the necessities, but instead it (and the comments) have just made me want to buy more! I want a pair of Frye boots and Wellies next.
honeydew / 7504 posts
My shoe rack is definitely a place that I could pare down by a LOT. I keep hanging on to shoes that I bought for one occasion that I will likely NEVER wear again, but, you know….just in case (like navy blue strappy heels?). It’s time to clean out. This is a good way to figure out what I really NEED to have.
-black (or brown) knee high boots for fall/winter
-warm winter boots
-casual flats for home (right now I have a grey pair of loafers from Target that I loooove)
-flip flops (I could totally clean out here, I have an obscene amount – damn you, Old Navy, and your buy-2-for-$5)
-black pumps
-strappy sandals for dressier occasions
-strappy heels
-dressier flats for work (black and tan)
-rain boots
-sneakers
-gardening/work around the house shoes (right now I have a pair of old flip-flops and crocs)
That should do it. Time to get cleaning!
eggplant / 11408 posts
@littlebug: I forgot about my Crocs! I do love them, but if I get a pair of Keen’s, I think I will replace them. I feel like Keen’s are more versatile for what I’m going to need.
I have a few old pair of shoes that I’m hanging on to for pretty much no reason whatsoever…I need to get rid of them!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Mrs. Blue: haha me too! I want frye, weeklies and sorels even more! I wouldn’t complain for some minnetonkas either
clementine / 920 posts
I agree with @Mrs. Blue I want to go home and clean out my shoe collection but I’m afraid that is only going to make room for me to buy new ones. I have never owned rain boots but it sounds like everyone considers them a staple so I may have to consider buying a pair. I do have a pair of slip-ons that I keep by the front door for when I have to take the puppy out. They aren’t cute but very functional.

@mrs. wagon: @Mrs. Blue: @Bluemasonjar: i had a lot of the same type of shoe… high heels, boots, ballet flats and flip flops. who needs that many shoes? most of them i didn’t even wear once a year and I also bought shoes because they were on sale. if i put all the money i wasted on cheaper shoes towards investing in nicer quality classic shoes that would last years, i think i would be much happier with my shoe wardrobe. that’s what i’m trying to achieve anyway!

I want a pair of Wellies! Do you ever find them for less? Hunter ones are so pricey
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
@Mrs. Chocolate: they have them on gilt from time to time!

I love this list. I’m dying for some Nike wedge sneakers because they’re just SO cool looking and comfy + some great hunter boots for spring and fall. For moms it’s all about the comfort and I’m just glad we have so many cute options. Thanks for this adorable post!
