I wrote a review for Honest diapers here a while ago. We have loved them and the cost didn’t end up being too much for us because a one-month supply would last about 6-7 weeks. But recently I’ve been looking for areas to cut costs in order to pay for my tuition and J’s daycare. Although we may only save a few bucks a month, they sure do add up, so I decided to do a comparison of some natural brands of diapers. It takes a lot of time to price-shop, so I hope I can save some people the trouble who prefer to use eco-diapers for whatever reason. I have personally used each and every one of these brands in the name brand section, and loved and would recommend each one.
B R A N D N A M E S
A monthly bundle is $79.95, but it has never included enough wipes to last the amount of diapers so I add on three packs of wipes. The cost comes to $91.09, which usually lasts me about six weeks. Because J is in size 4 diapers, a bundle comes with 174 diapers and four packages of wipes, which contain 72 wipes each. It’s hard to calculate the exact price of diapers because the wipes are included in the bundle price, but I think I have figured out the estimated cost for the bundle.
If you bought six packages of diapers at full price, it would be $83.70, and for an additional four packages of wipes would be $19.80, which totals to $103.50. This makes the bundle a 22.8% savings. To calculate the price of the diapers and wipes separately, I took 22.8% off each. This makes the diapers in the bundle cost $64.62 and the wipes cost $15.29.
Price per diaper: $0.37
Price per wipe: $0.05 per wipe, or $3.82 a package.
One package of diapers on Amazon for size 4 is $50.47, but if you use subscribe and save, you can save an additional 20%. This brings the price for $40.38 per pack of 135 diapers.
Ordering one package of wipes on Amazon is $12.99 for 350 wipes, and through subscribe and save the price drops to $10.39.
Price per diaper: $0.29
Price per wipe: $0.03
One package for diapers on Amazon is $44.99 for a pack of 120 in size 4. Using subscribe and save would bring the cost down to $35.99.
The Earth’s Best wipes only come in a package of 12 which includes 864 wipes. Subscribe and save does allow you to subscribe to a shipment only once every three months if you don’t need that much in a month. The price for the wipes are $43.08 full price and $34.46 for subscribe and save.
Price per diaper: $0.29
Price per wipe: $0.04

I have yet to try these off brands, but since Nurtured by Nature is the cheapest I have found thus far and is available through subscribe and save, I think I will give it a go.
One pack of 108 size 4 diapers is $33.16 and through subscribe and save the price is $26.53. Nurtured by Nature does not have wipes for sale on Amazon.
Price per diaper: $.0.25
The subscribe and save price is $35.19 for 108 diapers also in size 4, or $43.99 for full price. The wipes come in a package of 10 with 70 wipes in each package, totaling 700 wipes with the price of $18.39 subscribe and save or $22.99 full price.
Price per diaper: $0.32
Price per wipe: $0.02
Whole Foods 365
Whole Foods also sells the Whole Foods 365 brand of diapers, which I have used in the past! I would have loved to include them in the price comparison, but my local store does not sell them. They are worth checking out. In addition I have found that by keeping an eye on sales, I can save a significant amount of eco diapers. Target recently ran an ad for Seventh Generation diapers that were $15.19 a box for 54 diapers in size 4, and the Babyganics brand was similarly priced. After doing this price comparison, I will be trying the Nurtured by Nature brand to see how they work.
What is your favorite eco-friendly diaper brand? Any tips to save money on diapers?

Great post, but how do you find the quality differences amongst the group?

The Subscribe & Save discount is only 5% unless you also have Amazon Mom (and pay for Prime), right? Or am I mistaken? We don’t have Prime/Amazon Mom, so the Subscribe & Save discount has only ever been 5% for us.

@Mari Oh I am so sorry, I actually didn’t realize that. I somehow have amazon mom for free? I thought it was available to all mothers- because I haven’t paid for it.
@Freckles: for the ones I’ve tried, honest, seventh gen and earths best; I have found they all have worked really well for us! I have yet to try the off brands (except WF 365, which is great!), but I’m planning to try the nurtured by nature now that I realize they are so cost-efficient, and I will let you know what I think.

It is amazing how a savings of a couple of pennies per diaper savings adds up over a couple of years!!

@Mrs. Pen: We had Amazon Mom when DD1 was a baby. It was free only for a year. After that they tried to get us to buy Prime. Not sure how it works now, this was at least 2 yrs ago.

@Mrs. Confetti: Definitely! It’s a difference of up to several hundred dollars depending- and every dollar saved helps!
@mrsmate: oh okay, that could be it. I guess I am in my first year then?

@Mrs. Pen: I think you have to be an Amazon Mom/Prime to get the 20%, but for us the cost definitely pays for itself within a couple months since we buy lots and lots of diapers, wipes, etc.!
We tried the Honest Company diaper and I liked them, but they were just more than we could afford for diapering two babies! The Nurtured by Nature is about what we pay for our Pampers from Amazon and the Seventh Generation and Earth’s Best are just a few cents more per diaper. Your post has convinced me to try some of the cheaper natural diapers and see if they work as good/are worth the few extra dollars (which adds up when you have to buy 3 boxes of diapers per month)!

@Mrs. Blue: Let me know if they work for you, if you try them! Man, I have a hard time with the cost of diapering one – I’d be looking to save a buck even more with two

We used to use Earth’s Best and switched to Nurtured by Nature a few months ago. We use Amazon subscribe & save and with the discount through Amazon Mom/Prime, it comes out to $0.21 per diaper (size 3). We haven’t noticed a difference between the two brands. I’d love to get Honest diapers since they are so cute but can’t really justify the huge difference in price.

Wow I love this. I think I need to go look at eco diapers more This is an awesome post!

We used 7th generation for N’s sensitive skin. I like that with Amazon, they tell you the price per diaper under the retail price!

Wow, thanks for the price comparisons. What exactly does “eco” diaper mean – does it degrade in the landfill, or does it still take 500 years to decompose?

Thanks for the comparisons, this is super helpful!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Mrs. Chipmunk: usually it means they are free of chlorine, most are biodegradable (so yes, take less time to decompose), use more natural or renewable ingredients that are easier on the environment, some may lack dyes etc… Not all follow this criteria, but most do. You can read on each package which brand lacks which.
@Mrs. High Heels: I really like that too! It’s nice to see it all in one place.
@catlady: I’ve loved using honest, but with so many other more affordable options out there I am compelled to switch. J has sensitive skin and allergies to skin products so using a more natural diaper is a must. He was allergic to most cloth diapers too – we could only use organic cotton. Hopefully we won’t have to buy him organic underwear

@Mrs. Pen: Our LO seems to be allergic to most cloth diapers too! It is tough. She does great with both Earth’s Best and Nurtured by Nature though. I hope you will find something that works for J!

curious how these prices compare with buying pampers or a standard non-Eco brand.

We used elimination communication, along with 30 organic prefolds that we washed ourselves if our wee one peed anywhere besides the potty. She was done with all diaper back-ups night and day at 14 months and independent by 18 months. It was a great learning journey and I’d do it again if we had a third child.

we love earth’s best for when we use disposables! super absorbent and have never leaked, even overnight. we use s&s and buy when they have coupons!

I had some size one honest diapers that were great. When I moved to size two, they were SCENTED. did you find this?

We only tried Earth’s Best & had so many blowouts. Now we use Pampers Swaddlers or Target diapers. Pampers are so much softer, but I actually found out that Target diapers are more hypoallergenic than even Pampers Sensitive. They may not be very eco-friendly but from a chemicals-on-the-bum standpoint, I feel pretty good about them, and they are really affordable.

We have the Amazon Prime w Subscribe and Save – it’s awesome to have things delivered in 2 days vs going to the store and our stores are pretty limited on Eco-friendly options. We first started using Bambo Nature but they recently re-designed their product so we switched to Andy Pandy brand. I love them – they don’t leak, go up high enough on her back and are absorbent enough that we go through fewer diapers. They are more expensive so I wouldn’t use them in the days of endless newborn poop but after 6 months they have been awesome!

We have to use disposables for daycare/school and trips, so I’m curious to try those Nurtured by Nature ones! I’m so glad I went with cloth diapers overall though. It’s so nice to hardly ever have to buy diapers.

Such a great breakdown! Since we cloth diapered, we never ventured into this territory and if we ever needed disposables, we’d just buy target brand since it was the most convenient (I go there so often).

I love how you broke this down to per diaper and wipe, thank you for the prices and info!

this is a great breakdown! not sure if we’ll need diapers with our Lil’ CG, but if we do, I’m definitely coming back to this!
