When I became a SAHM, the first thing we had to do was slash our budget dramatically. Our budget is pretty tight with one parent at home so I began researching couponing. I was so intrigued by extreme couponers I was determined to make this my new hobby. I had never truly understood couponing, — anytime I tried to use a coupon I’d get up to the checkout and it would rarely pan out and that frustrated me. I stumbled upon the book How to Shop for Free and it opened my eyes to a whole new world of saving money. These days, nearly three years later, I rarely buy anything of value over $10 without a coupon. Practice has made it a wonderful habit.
Here are 5 starter tips for navigating the world of couponing:
1. Read the coupon
Don’t just look at the picture on the coupon (which may indicate a specific product). Oftentimes, a coupon will encompass a broad range of a brand’s particular products while the coupon image may just be the latest product of the brand. A coupon can be worth more than just its face value when you consider the other products and sizes it encompasses.
2. Combine coupons with store sales
To save extra money, compare weekly sale ads at several different stores and look for items you want on sale. Combining a coupon and a sale saves you a lot of money. This is pretty relevant in the household goods and clothing departments I’ve noticed.
3. You can use two coupons at once….sometimes
You can use a manufacturer’s coupon and a store’s coupon on one item. For instance, you can use a Target coupon and a manufacturer’s coupon on one item (like diapers). You CANNOT use two manufacturer’s coupons on one item (you can use them on two items) or two store coupons on one item.
4. BOGO’s are always a win
Buy One Get One free deals are amazing because you can use one manufacturer’s coupon and one store coupon on each product — yes that’s two coupons per item. You can use a coupon on a product you got for free as your ‘get one’ thus bringing your entire purchase total down even more. And if you are an extreme couponer, this can mean making money (store credit)!!!
5. Watch out for tricky advertising
You can use a manufacturer’s coupon anywhere. I asked this question once when using a manufacturer’s coupon (label is always at the top by the expiration date) at a store that was not advertised on the coupon. Many coupons say “redeemable at xyz store.” Well this is not a mandate — it is an advertising ploy to get you to use your coupon at the store you most likely received it from.
Coupons can be tricky but if you know what you are doing they can be amazing!! I like to think of them as monopoly money that helps your money stretch further.
Do you use coupons?

I always consider couponing, but I feel like it’s so overwhelming to master! Other than the occasional manufacturer’s coupon for formula or diapers, I’m awful at even remembering I have coupons to use.
I’m so impressed with people who are organized enough to successfully use coupons; good for you!

Thank you for sharing. These are really good tips! I have a tendency to just throw away coupons depending on the picture, so I need to do better with this!
How do you recommend getting coupons (e.g. just buying Sunday newspapers, signing up for manufacturer’s coupons?). Not sure what the best approach is…

I have been trying to use coupons more. I have found several great websites that match sales w coupons and that is very helpful. So far I just use printable coupons and haven’t taken the time to buy a weekly newspaper for coupons.

I’ve been meaning to ask if any of our bloggers are extreme couponers…..I don’t understand how it’s done….I feel like it’s impossible for me to buy something for like, a penny. Maybe it varies from state to state, and some states just have better in-store coupons to lure people in while other states don’t?

I do my best to use coupons at BJ’s where I do stack as much as I can (BJ’s coupons plus manufacturer’s coupons). I buy a lot of store brand and there are no coupons for that, but hey I like my store brand so I am not sacrificing taste/quality in my opinion. The things are not store brand typically do not have coupons,(1) fresh fruits and veggies (I have seen coupons for those but in addition to buying something I wouldn’t buy anyway so it is not a savings) or (2) Gluten free things (the only exception I have seen is Chex cereal) or nut free/egg free things.
That means I do buy things for my gluten, nut, egg free child and he is generally the only one that eats those things because it is all so expensive.
The coupons I do use are pretty much the free printable ones. I do subscribe and save via Amazon Prime too, for those gluten free things if I can because it is the only way to save any money. And yes I do check the per unit cost first before I subscribe.

I use coupons in spurts, I get really motivated and then I’ll kind of fall of the wagon.
I use inserts and a website to get coupons, but honestly, I feel like the days of the extreme couponers are limited as the stores make the cash registers more limiting in terms of the number of coupons they’re willing to accept. Even the manufacturers seem to be limiting the number of coupons and items that can be purchased.

Love couponing! The best is when stores allow you to stack their coupon and manf on ONE product. We just got our statement from BJs because we were up for renewal. We saved over $1700 in just BJ and manf coupons last year! Woohoo!

I mostly shop at Trader Joe’s, so I can’t use coupons there. I also shop at Target a lot, but I’m not organized or disciplined enough to use coupons. I also feel like when I do clip and save them, I end up buying things I don’t really need just because I have a coupon. I know people do save money using them, but I just haven’t figured out how to. I do always search for online coupons any time I’m buying something online.

I love using my coupons at Target! They have an app called Cartwheel that lets you add items on your list at a discounted rate plus you can use 1 manufacturer coupon + 1 target coupon on top of the discount. And if you use your Target DEBIT card you get an extra 5% off! It’s the best. I’m hooked and I find all kinds of great deals. Recently I used a Cartwheel coupon for maternity pants at 40% off plus 1 5% target coupon plus my 5% debit card discount and the pants came out to about $6.

Im also very fiercely private about my personal information and I feel like if I sign up for coupon websites I’m going to be bombarded with junk snail mail, junk email, and telemarketers…..when you get something “free” on the Internet, there’s always strings attached……does anyone subscribe to couponing websites that can tell me your experiences?

@mrs. chipmunk I am private but nearly as much as I would like to be because I gave into convenience. It is hard to walk it back now, but c’est la vie. My coupon sites (and most sites that require a sign in like say for looking at crochet patterns) I sign up with Mrs.MavensJunkMail@emailprovidernamehere.com and then I either log into that email once a week or I end up setting a filter to forward the coupons to my real email address.

I was into couponing for a bit, but then gave up on it! I even created a binder organized by aisle type a la KrazyKouponLady… but then I realized that most of the coupons are for stuff I don’t really need or would never buy (except maybe toothpaste), so I’ve since given up couponing. I do always search for retail codes though before I buy anything online.

I used a coupon a lot and these are great tips! At this point I realized I save more money if I just do all (or at least as much as I can) of my shopping at ALDI. But, I used to get some GREAT deals when I paired coupons with B1G1 sales at Publix!

I am an ex extreme couponer!! However, I was wasting a lot of time and energy clipping, sorting, and lugging coupons that I never used. So now I only clip coupons for items I know I would buy no matter what, and I use them if I happen to need that item before the coupon expires.
My most extreme couponing story was that when Ronzoni came out with their veggie pasta, there was a $1 coupon for a box, and my store had it on sale 10 for $10. I went on ebay and bought a pack of 40 coupons (yes, there are people who clip massive amounts of coupons and sell them) for $5 and got 40 boxes of pasta for $5!!

@mrs. wagon – wow! ebay, that’s amazing. there are some things i always buy, so i try to look for coupons, like chobani yogurt, and i will print out 10 coupons for 30 cents each and buy them when they are on sale for a dollar, but it’s still not THAT cheap. and then the employee at the register gives me flack about only being able to use 3 coupons per visit or something and then it makes me not want to coupon ever again.

@mrs. wagon: Wow! So what happened.. did you eat all of that pasta!?
I am a terrible couponer. I do use Cartwheel at Target and clip when convenient, but these are all great tips.

@Mrs. Chipmunk: that’s too bad.. I never even get an eye bat when I hand over my stack. Usually the cashiers are impressed and say stuff like “I gotta start coupling”! Also, doesn’t your store double coupons? A 30 cent coupon for a dollar chobani means a 40 cent yogurt for me!!
@T-Mom: yep! Took a while but it got us through the picky phase when Wagon Jr. only ate 5 foods.. Luckily one of them was pasta!

These are great tips, I am just starting to get into couponing and can use all the help I can get. One up I recently heard was to start by learning to coupon at 2-3 stores and not worry about the others yet. Sometimes the idea of having to go to six different stores to get the best deals of the week makes me want to not even try. I also appreciated the top to focus more on stuff than food. Couponing for food can be frustrating when the bulk of food coupons are for things you don’t normally buy, mentally ditching the category also helps simplify.

#5 is not always true. My local grocery store won’t accept coupons with another store’s logo on them.
Also, it is illegal to buy or sell coupons, so please don’t buy any on ebay. If you’re interested in learning more about couponing, http://www.jillcataldo.com/ is a great resource. She’s Chicago based, but a lot of the stores are national chains or have parent companies, so you can usually find similar deals in your neck of the woods.

The nonprofit I used to work at had volunteer couponers who would help us stock our food pantry at huge discount for items that weren’t regularly donated. I have never figured out how to master this myself

I have always tried to coupon and found it SO time consuming to make it worth it… It would also force me to buy brands/items I didn’t normally buy or eat so that was a bummer. Now the extent of my couponing is if I see something I normally buy as a coupon, I will use that. But I can’t make it a habit. I am in awe of those who save over 20% of their grocery bill every trip!
I do want to start using coupons more exclusively for toiletry products. I feel that’s the biggest area to save.

@derevival: I use coupons.com and buy the Sunday paper at the dollar store!
@Mrs. Chipmunk: Well its a lot of work and research for sure. I have made money back a few times and have bought a few items for like 10 cents which was really fun. Mostly, I’ve done that with matching BOGO coupons with store sales/store coupons. One time I got 5 bottles of dish soap for about 5 cents this way.
@looch: I agree with you. I fall off the wagon too and I have noticed that since couponing has made a comeback in the past few years, stores do seem to be tightening up the restrictions. @locavore_mama: nicely done!
@mrs. tictactoe: I ended up getting the target debit card to save the 5% and mostly just for the free shipping online. I probably shop at target too much.
@corina barajas: that’s awesome!
@Mrs. Chipmunk: I did subscribe to one and there wasn’t too much associated junk mail but one good idea would be to make a completely separate email acct. (chipmunkcoupons@gmail.com) that’s what I’ve considered
opps ditto mrs.maven
@Mrs. High Heels: yes I always search promo codes too, such a good habit!
@mrs. wagon: love it! I’m similar, I used to do real good but I realized I was carrying around a lot too… my most extreme was totally random revlon $2 off for two products, it was like nail accessories, I kept getting the coupons over and over and used them to buy loads of nail clips tweezers, emory boards etc. for free plus made store credit! Then, I had a ridiculous stock of this crap and just gave it away to women I knew and sold a bag of it all at a yard sale for five bucks… SO funny! Still have some too.

@Cole: I agree, it can be frustrating and food is the hardest to coupon on. When I coupon I have to invest a lot of time. @abbylyn: I was referring to catalinas that are actually manufacturers coupons but come out of the register with the store logo on them, technically, I believe its illegal for them not to accept them if they are a manufacturers coupon.
@Mrs. Pen: You are so right, toiletries add up big time and i’ve noticed the most deals in this category…esp with the PG inserts

We do coupon, and save about $40-$50 per trip. A friend of mine is so good at couponing, though, and spends $50 and saves $100. I still can’t figure out how she does it!

Im so bad at couponing at the grocery but any book, toy, or clothing outlet Im always on it. I need to find a way to work better at food shopping as a whole. Thanks for the tips

I’ve recently become obsessed with couponing! Mostly at the grocery store, and ours sends a 10% coupon in the mail every week – I save so much money now!

I really need to start this because good lord my kids are starting to eat like crazy. I think I am going to have to become a crazy coupon lady in order to feed these guys as teenagers.
