Lil’ CB was still in Korea on his first birthday, so as part of his birthday gift, we sent an updated photo album including photos of our 60-pound lab mix, Piper. We were pretty sure that Lil’ CB didn’t have many encounters with large dogs, so we wanted to be sure that he saw at least some photos of his furry sister before he came home. I also found a stuffed animal that looked almost exactly like our pup, including the red collar:
The resemblance is uncanny…especially that far-off, unimpressed stare!
We weren’t sure whether or not Mini Piper would return home with Lil’ CB, so we were delighted to find her among Lil’ CB’s things and even more delighted to find him loving on her. After missing the first 15 months of Lil’ CB’s life, to see him hanging out with a gift we sent over oceans and thousands of miles was kind of awesome.
Lil’ CB played with Mini during the 16-hour flight home and once we were home, Mini remained by his side. By the time Lil’ CB started attending daycare 3 months later, Mini had become his constant companion and his bonafide lovey.
After forgetting Mini at daycare one too many times and having to drive back there for it before bedtime, we picked up a back-up Mini at the toy store (side note: once your child gets attached to a lovey, immediately go and buy a back up if you can!!!). We decided to leave the OG Mini at home only and the back-up Mini, now affectionately known as Travel Mini, was the lovey that traveled with CB to and from daycare and to other destinations. And goodness me, I am so thankful we bought a back-up Mini because we ended up losing Travel Mini at a library event (I actually think another kiddo took it…not that I’m bitter or anything…;) and another sidenote: purchase more than one back-up if you can!). We purchased one more back-up Mini, and it’s a good thing we did, because shortly afterwards, they ended up discontinuing the line at Toys R Us.
Time has taken quite a toll on both Minis, and Travel Mini’s frequent flier miles probably now rival Home Mini’s miles from her trips to and from Korea. Over the last 3 and a half years, Lil’ CB has had Mini by his side at every nap and every sleep in multiple cities and states; she’s been with him through numerous sick days; has had many pretend adventures with her boy; and has been the recipient of probably more cuddles than I have! She’s gone from a relatively sturdy stuffed dog to a floppy one and her nose and fur definitely show signs of wear and love.
Lil’ CB loves to suck his fingers and smell Mini’s paws, usually holding her with the fingers that are not in his mouth. I know, it sounds weird, and it is, and for the longest time, Lil’ CB swore she smelled like strawberries. (See? Totally weird!)
Mini is still by Lil’ CB’s side daily, really at any time that he is sitting idly — while watching TV, riding the car, and of course, sleeping. Because of her extra special story, I don’t mind indulging Lil’ CB’s lovey love even at 4 and a half years-old. I do wonder how long it will last, though… And because the end of so many things has been so stealthy (mispronunciation of words, little toddler tendencies, cute little misconceptions, etc), I’ll gladly embrace Mini while Lil’ CB does the same. Because I know someday, without warning or prior notice, Mini will probably be stashed in the back of a closet or thrown haphazardly behind a bookshelf. So for now, we will treasure the days of the lovey. And perhaps, when Lil’ CB is headed off to college, I’ll secretly pack Mini into Lil’ CB’s things as a reminder of her sweetness and his innocence.

Totally off topic but my dog’s name is Piper too!! =)

I love this! So sweet that he became attached to something you sent him.
Liam sleeps with a puppy angel dear lovey and a baby doll every night, but he hasn’t become so attached that he wants to take either one everywhere he goes. We have more than one puppy love, but not more than one baby, so baby always stays in the crib and we take the back up puppy love on overnight trips.

What a sweet story and wonderful pictures documenting a great relationship between little boy and lovey
I never had a lovey growing up–I had a baby blanket my parents gave me, but I rejected it pretty quickly, so they gave it to my sister 2 years later when she was born. That “reject blanket” from me quickly became her lovey, and she carried it ragged until kindergarten and continued to sleep with it every night through elementary school! It is now barely a few inches of worn, falling-apart fabric that she still keeps in a glass case in her room and she hopes to have it sewn into her wedding dress someday
I almost wish I would have had a lovey so I could have a reminder like that, and I hope my daughter will have one as well (though she’s only 3 months right now and not attached to any sort of object, so we’ll see!)

so cute!!! I love this story. That is so sweet that you sent the puppy to him and he brought it home with him!!

So sweet. My DD still has two loveys at age 5.5 and I don’t see any signs of her stopping soon. We don’t travel with them any more (one of them is a one of the kind, can never be replaced item, and the other is already a replacement for one she lost overseas), but she is allowed a small stand-in of her choice for travel.

That is so sweet!
My LO has a lovey and sucks the same fingers as CB while she rubs it under her nose. We also made sure to buy 2 since heaven forbid it be in the wash before her nap!

That is sooo sweet! I keep thinking our boys will adopt a lovey on their own, but at almost 13 months, no sign of any lovey attachment yet. Oh, and the resemblance between Piper and mini-Piper really is uncanny!

That is so special that it is the lovey you sent to him before he knew you! I am trying to get my LO to take to something… anything… after getting rid of her paci. So far, nothing has worked.

Two things that we took to Russia to meet our oldest (and they were left with him while we returned to the US to wait for our court date) were still with him when we returned and brought him home. Both seemingly untouched, one the blankie became his lovey (I made back ups after an unfortunate no nap saturday because it was in the laundry because he pee’ed on it. I gave it back unlaundered, he was asleep in minutes, who knew? Upon getting up baby, blankets, clothes etc were washed). The stuffed dog looks remarkably like Snuggle Puppy (Sandra Boynton’s book). The dog can go out (he does less and less now that he is almost 4) the blanket nope stays in the house, but he wants them all to sleep with.
For my little one (almost 2) it apparently is Bamboo and Coconut two beanie boos, I ordered back ups and fortunately he doesn’t care that one set has sparkly eyes and one does not. I swapped them so they can get somewhat even wear. He loves himself some blankies but knock on wood doesn’t care what as long has he has something.

Aww I love this. Drakey has a blanket lovie. I dont know for sure but I think he got attached to it right as we took the pacifier away. Big Ole Blanket (or BOB to DH and I) goes everywhere with us as well and gets disgustingly gross because of it. We purchased 2 back ups once we realized how attached Drake had become but he can tell the difference!!! We have both Big Old Blanket and spare one in his bed and he always grabs the right one or if we try to hand him the other one (called yellow blanket) he immediately knows. Its so uncanny as we have a hard time telling, though BIG OLD Blanket is more worn these days making it a bit easier, but Drake never does.

Love this. C is attached to his sleep sacks, and now that he outgrew the size he was wearing, he holds that one while wearing the bigger one. Thankfully, he is cool with leaving them in the crib. I wish he had gotten attached to an animal – that is just too cute seeing CB with his mini. Love it.

Sooo cute! I so want my LO to attach to a lovey, but unfortunately for me, right now, my hair is her lovey
I can’t pack that up for her and send it with her to college!

You may not have to be secretive about packing it away to college…I still have my lovie, and it came with me to school!
Such a sweet story

I love the story behind Mini…and you know I think CB is the cutest!
My LO is ridiculously attached to his lovey and we only have one. I have a feeling he will be taking it to college if it doesn’t fall apart first!

DS still hasn’t really attached himself to a lovey, but I’m intrigued to see what he does choose. As you mentioned, I’ll definitely have to make sure to purchase several back ups. Just in case…
As for getting rid of a lovey, my baby cousin had a few stuffed animal loveys as a kid/infant. He’s currently 16 (years old) and still has all his loveys! He sleeps with them nightly and they travel with him when we go out of state! I don’t foresee him getting rid of them anytime soon. When I was pregnant with DS, I asked if I could have one of his loveys for DS. He said sure! And he handed me the one that’s just more decor that I know he was never attached to. When I asked if I could have “t-bone steak and eggs” (that the stuffed german shepard’s name. ha!), he said no. I could borrow him, but not have him. Lol

I slept with my lovey (a doll named Suzy) in my bed into high school. When I went to college, my mom sent her to me. When I moved across the country 3 years later, you better believe she came with! No, I didn’t sleep with her anymore! Now she sleeps with my little one; but after reading this, I’ll have to nix that! They don’t make Suzy anymore. . . and since I went through quite a few myself, I think a new doll will be necessary!

I had my lovely till I was 7 years old till it completely was destroyed and I couldn’t hang on to it for any longer.
My brother had his till now!
He’s in his 30s. He doesn’t sleep with it anymore or anything… He definitely knows where it is at all times and has a very special place for it.

None of my kids really had a lovey. They do get attached to toys for awhile but never for such a prolonged time. I love the story, it’s so cute that it was a part of a care package you sent him. It just makes it so sweet.

@Mrs. Confetti: that is adorable!!! my cousin became really attached to his mom’s silk pajamas when he was a baby and that became his lovey — it was HILARIOUS to see him carrying around a pink silk pajama top! my aunt ended up buying him his own silk pajamas and that was even more funny…a toddler in hugh hefner-eque silk pajamas! haha!

Awww! That is so cute! I don’t see the problem with kids having a lovey. Especially one like Mini! My nephew is almost 8 and still brings his lovey (stuffed dog also) with him when they travel. But he isn’t obviously carrying it around. And now there is basically only stuffing in the head and paws. lol! I think it’s nice for them to have a constant. Good call on the back ups!

Melt. My. Heart. I love that little CB!
M has his LE and we have 3 backups. LE goes everywhere with M. She’s his comfort, always. Rough car ride? Need LE. Fell down? Need LE. Your cookie has a chip missing? Need LE. I love that he has something that brings so much comfort.

so sweet that he got attached to the lovey you sent across the sea! off topic, but noelle sucks her two middle fingers too!!
kiwi / 566 posts
@Mrs. High Heels: My sister that was so attached to her lovey also sucked her 2 middle fingers, I just thought of that! She did until she was 7 or 8: my parents kept trying to get her to stop and said that she’d need braces. She started saving up all her money and when people asked her what it was for, she said “braces”. That’s how much she didn’t want to give up sucking her fingers!
