Mr. Bee and I recently started the Couch to 5K program, which is designed to take you from the couch to running 5k (3.1 miles) in 9 weeks. Although I’ve never been a fan of running, we live right by a beautiful park and I didn’t want to pay $80/month for a gym membership. Plus I haven’t worked out in almost 5 years since I was pregnant with Charlie, so this program seemed like an easy way to transition back into getting fit.
How it works is you run 3 times a week. The first week you alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for 20 minutes. If the program is too difficult, you can stretch it out, and if you find it easy, you shouldn’t skip ahead. It’s supposed to slowly ease you into running so that you don’t give up by setting unrealistic goals. By Week 5 you’re alternating jogging 1/2 mile (5 minutes) then walking 1/4 mile (3 minutes). Eventually you walk less and jog more until you’re running a complete 5k by week 9 with no walking.
We downloaded the Couch to 5k app ($1.99), as well as the Runkeeper App (free) before our first run. The Couch to 5K app logs your workouts so you can see your progress, and you can even connect with friends. Once you hit your 5k goal, there are apps for 5k to 10k and half marathon from the same company if you want to continue!
Runkeeper is a very comprehensive running app with a ton of features including custom running plans, calculating your calorie burn, synching with FitBit and other devices, connecting with friends, and more. I’d be ecstatic if I just work up to running 5k 3 times a week! Since this app has so many options though, there was no harm in running it at the same time every time we run the Couch 2 5K app as well.
Even though I consider myself to be out of shape, I didn’t find week 1 and 2 of the program to be too bad. I guess running after two kids has at least kept me from being in horrible shape! The Couch to 5K app was great because it would tell us when to jog and when to walk so I didn’t have to constantly check my phone. I do plan on buying a running belt though so I don’t have to carry my phone. It seems that running a 5k is doable when it previously seemed impossible since I hate running. You could even do this with your little one in tow in a jogging stroller!
Now is the perfect time to get in shape before summer. I know a lot of people, even those who hate running, have had success with this program.
Has anyone else done Couch to 5K? Anyone care to join us?
PS – We’re also starting Whole30 on Wednesday. We’re all in for summer fitness!

I started it right before I got pregnant. Made it up to Week 4 and was feeling pretty good. Then pregnancy hit and I was tired and then I was scared that running would not be good for pregnancy. Silly. I keep saying I want to get back into it, but we’re in the process of moving, so….yeah, that’s not happening! Best of luck to you guys, though! It definitely is a really manageable program. I absolutely LOATHE running but found this tolerable, if not even enjoyable!

I HATE running and always have. I was always one of the slowest when we had to run the mile in middle school and I feel super awkward when I run. But… I have heard great things about this app and it makes me think I should give it a try! Maybe one day…

I started the Couch to 5K program a couple years ago, and went from hating running to starting to really enjoy running! I got through about 7 weeks, though, and my foot started having issues (arthritis maybe?), so I had to quit, but I was really bummed. I loved the idea of being a “runner” of some sort!

I’m starting with you guys! I technically was supposed to start last week, and I did, but then LO got sick and messed up the rest of my week, so I’m gonna start over this week. The first run went well, and that leaves me feeling hopeful!

Good for you! I haaaaaate running, but I’ve been meaning to try this program for a few years. Maybe I’ll give a shot after I see how awesome you look afterwards!

I used Couch to 5K (just the written plan – no app at the time) to run my first and only 5K. Just getting back into running now, but just doing simple self-timed intervals between jogging and walking, since I don’t have a race I am training for.

I have started this program twice, but have never finished it. Maybe third time’s a charm?

I love that you are doing this!! I have a few running apps, but I’ve never done the couch to 5k… Looks awesome though!

I used it and got up to week 6 before my knee gave out. It hurt for so long that by the time I got back into it, I was out of shape again.
It was a great program though!

I did a c25k a couple summers ago, and then ran a 5k in October, something that I never thought I would do. I didn’t do that great (45 minutes), but it was also in a field/all grass in the mud when I practiced on sidewalks.
I’m hoping to start one soon!

I’ve been wanting to try this as well! The app looks cool. Can you listen to music while you are running this app?

@ainsworthe: yes you can listen to music while running runkeeper and couch 2 5k!

Great job! I did a couch to 5k a few years back. I always hated running-still do, but love the feeling after and it’s the only thing that has kept weight off. I even did the 5 to 10k after it! I kept that up for a few years, mostly so I never had to start over! Then I got pregnant last summer. Now I got cleared to exercise, I’m trying to wrap my mind around starting up again… Maybe this is the motivation I need!

I used to hate running but Couch to 5K kind of got me into it. Now I just use Runkeeper to log my runs and use spotify for music to run to. It is great, I am actually quite enjoying it and I never thought I would say that. I need to look into running belts too though.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: If you want to have something to train for, you can run/walk a women’s 5K in Wheaton Regional Park with me at the end of June! http://www.mcrrc.org/run-roses-5k

I so want to try to start running sometime. This sounds like a doable one too and I need to get my butt up and just do it already

I did it years ago when coming back from an injury and then again after M was born. Now I’m a huge Galloway fan for long runs with the BOB.
