Liam is 25 months old and 100% day and night potty trained! I wrote about it when we were a few weeks in here, but I thought I’d give a more detailed breakdown of how it happened for us, now that he’s completely trained.
Here’s what we used to get through it:
Baby Bjorn Potty Chair – We bought the baby bjorn potty chair when he was about 17 months old, and he used it once around 18 months, but then didn’t really have an interest. Once we really started training him, he used this chair all the time, but after a while, he started liking the big potty better. Now he’s back to liking the little chair again, which is sometimes nice because he can go number 1 completely by himself, but it’s also gross to deal with it when he goes number 2 in there.
Justice League underwear – I can’t find a link to the Target brand we used, but we really like this type of underwear, especially because most other brands were too big. Since he started training so young, lots of other underwear just didn’t fit him, so we went we these and they’ve been great. Plus, they’re inexpensive, which is good because we went through a lot each day at the beginning.
Once Liam was staying dry when he was awake, we put away our cloth diapers and switched to pull ups for bedtime and naps. After a couple of weeks, his pull up was consistently dry when he woke up from his naps, so we put him down in underwear, but kept the pull up at night for a couple more weeks. When I was on spring break, and could deal with less sleep and more laundry if necessary, we started putting him down for the night in underwear. He woke up wet a couple of times, but never in the middle of the night. Now, he never wakes up wet!
Method Purpose Natural Cleaning Lavender – I keep a bottle of natural all purpose cleaner in the bathroom now to spray his little potty, especially after he goes number two. I’m not sure when he’ll be ready to use the big potty exclusively, but I look forward to not having to clean the little one anymore.
Toddler Toilet Seat – We don’t have it yet, but I plan on getting a toilet seat like this one to make it easier for Liam to use the big potty by himself. Right now, with just the normal seat, we have to hold him the whole time he’s going.
T I M E L I N E
Week 1: We started on a three day weekend when he had a bad diaper rash. We stayed home most of the time and when we were home, he was without pants and a diaper. He had a few successes and several accidents. We didn’t force him to go in the potty and we didn’t give him extra snacks and liquid, like some potty training methods suggest. We did sometimes reward him with a gummy vitamin for going in the potty, but not every single time.
When our nanny returned on Tuesday, I told her what we had been doing and she agreed to continue. She was a huge help in this whole process. Throughout the week, his accidents became fewer and farther between.
Week 2: I bought him underwear and we started putting him in underwear without pants when we were home. We still put him in diapers when we left the house, but tried to stay home as much as possible. He had more accidents wearing underwear, but soon learned that they weren’t diapers.
Week 3: I ventured out of the house with Liam in underwear on the third weekend. He didn’t have any accidents, but he also wouldn’t go to the bathroom on a public toilet, so I kept our outings short.
Week 4: He finally had some successful public restroom visits, which made me much more confident to leave the house without diapers. At this point, I considered him mostly potty trained, even though he was in a pull up at nap time and at night.
Week 7: He was staying dry during nap time, so we went down to one pull up overnight.
Week 9: Even though he would sometimes wake up in the morning with a wet diaper, we decided to try underwear at night and after a couple of mornings with wet underwear (not in a row, but randomly), he’s now always dry.
Did you conquer potty training naps and nighttime separately?

Ahhh – I need to get on the night training!! Glad to hear it went so well for you. We are too reluctant to pull the trigger because she still wakes up with a pretty heavy pull-up. =/

thanks for the timeline! does a pull up let them feel wetness more? just wondering why you would use that instead of a diaper for training? i obviously am a ways off!

@birdofafeather: I’m not really sure, but we only used pull ups once he was trained while he was awake and used them just for his nap and at bedtime. We cloth diapered, so just using 2 cloth diapers per day doesn’t really make sense from a laundry perspective.

@mrs. tictactoe: got it. and i assume that you can pull them on and off like undies so he practice using the potty easily?

Good for you! I need to pull the trigger on going to undies. We’ve been doing “potty training lite” aka going on the potty when it’s convenient but wearing diapers in between. Some days he asks us, some days we prompt him and he refuses … it’s all over the place. Also, he refuses to do No. 2 in the potty. Did you have any issues with that?

@birdofafeather: yes, definitely.
@Mrs. Yoyo: he had no issues with number 2, but I know that’s so common.

Wow!! That’s awesome! To be done with both by 25 months is fabulous! We DO have that potty seat and it’s been a life saver. Since Mini is such a little guy still, he uses it to this day!

My son was 100% day trained around 22 months. We did the three days naked from the waist down with great success. A few months later we were able to ditch the nap pull-up/diaper (we used them both). We tried taking the nighttime diaper around 2.5 with NO success. He is now nearly 3.5 and still in a pull-up at night. Around 3 he began waking up dry and now He wakes dry 90% of the time so it probably is time to take it, but I’m 8 months pregnant with #3 and will deal with that after baby #3 is sleeping through the night.
It is different trying to do this with my daughter. Although she has shown great interest since 18 months (she is now nearly 20 months), it is much harder for me to be diligent at three 3 day potty training when there are two children to take care of. I really want her out of diapers before #3 arrives!

I wanted to add that I think going number 2 in the potty comes much easier for toddlers if potty training is started before 2. Neither of my kids have struggled with that at all.

I saw that toilet seat at @Mrs. Paintbrush: ‘s house and I loved it!!!! It’s so awesome…CB doesn’t need it anymore, but I definitely want to think about installing one for our next little one!

We have that seat for two of our big toilets and I’m a fan. Unfortunately, M prefers his little potty. Which, like you say, I’m ok with since he can go by himself.

My daughter’s still a little young for this, but I know the time will be here before I know it. Pinning this for future use!

Love reading this – has me thinking all this stalling may be silly, but I am not ready! All the cleaning up grosses me out far more than diapers…

Yay Liam!!!
Once we day potty trained DD, she night trained herself almost immediately. I was pleasantly surprised!

Mine started out night trained. I always put her on in the morning from infancy so she just naturally stayed dry at night. From there, we finished up the day training. Even though she trained super early, she still benefits from reminders to go.

@mrs. tictactoe: did your nanny keep him bottomless during that first week as well?

It looks like you are on a right track. My son can do number 1 on his own but he doesn’t even let me know when he is doing number 2… We also use the potty chair by Baby Bjorn.

I always heard that day training and night training are two different things are there are different mechanisms involved. That’s why some children can be potty trained by 2 and still wet their bed at 6. Sure there are tricks you can use to get them night trained, like making sure they go right before bed, take them to the potty when you go to bed and withhold liquids before bedtime, but neither of that will help completely if they’re not mature enough. (Don’t know how else to put it, it has to do with brain signals.)
Anyways, yay on being diaper free!

@Sammyfab: Sorry I never responded to this, but yes, she kept him naked from the waist down for the first week. It really helps because they actually get that they are peeing all over the floor instead of just wetting their training pants. It is messier, but we have two dogs and know that we can clean up the messes, especially having wood floors.
