Until recently, I have never found makeup I truly loved. Everything was mediocre, and I tried so many drugstore and high-end brands until I finally found what works best for me. Now, in the summer my makeup routine is slightly different. My pale Norwegian/German skin tends to change shades throughout the summer, so I need something that I can wear no matter my skin color. My whole routine only takes about five minutes and I actually really love the end product, finally!
1. Low-end eyeshadows work well for me – it’s a spot where I can save money, but I’ve actually been really happy with Elf and Maybelline. Although I’ve had a Naked palette on my wishlist for awhile, I can’t beat the low price of Elf eyeshadows when they work great for me.
2. I finish off my face with a bronzer. I have tried multiple drugstore brands, but my favorite has been one I just bought: Too Faced Endless Summer. It isn’t glittery like some, so it’s still professional while lending some color.
3. Eye primer: If I don’t wear an eye lid primer, my eyeshadow and eyeliner will crease and not last the whole day. So while I do go some days without it, I don’t expect my eye makeup to stay as long if I skip this.
4. Mascara: This is another area that I buy a less expensive product, and have had good results!
5. Eyeliner: I like to do a small little crease on top and bottom lid. I’d tried many eyeliners and have a few favorites. Urban Decay and Smashbox liquid are my favorite, but I have liked L’oreal Paris H.I.P. as a drugstore option.
6. BB cream: In the summer I don’t wear foundation. This BB cream is self-adjusting to skin tone, so I can wear it even if my face changes multiple shades in the summer. It gives me a really great coverage though, and once I tried it, I decided I like it better than my foundation.I was wearing a drugstore brand but didn’t like the lack of coverage, so for this product I did pay more than I normally would and I’m glad I did because I like it a lot better.
7. Lips: Okay, I love chapstick. I really do. It’s the foundation of my lips. But when I do feel like adding some color, I love the Mirenesse lip color. My lips tend to be on the dry-side so I have tended to avoid lip color but have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of this brand.
. . . . .
As for the actual routine – I always wash my face first. I learned a few tips from the lovely ladies at Sephora recently, and one has been to squirt a tiny amount of the BB cream into a dish and use a foundation brush to apply it to my face. It decreases bacteria contact from fingers and gives better coverage. I have to say, I noticed a difference when I tried it this way! It provides better coverage and seems to blend more flawlessly. Next I do a light all over brush of bronzer, but focus mostly on the natural contour lines of my cheek and jaw bones. One of the experts at Sephora told me to think of it as a three-shape motion along each side of the face. Onto the eyes, I curl my lashes and apply the eyelid primer and let it dry fully before applying eyeshadow with an eye brush, a small swoop of eyeliner and finally some mascara. I cannot stand sticky or clumped eyelashes, so I always take a piece of toilet paper and gently blink against it to remove clumps and give my eyelashes a more natural look.
Lastly, I apply some of my awesome chapstick and a smidge of lip color. A little makeup always helps give me an extra boost of confidence and makes me feel good. While I hardly ever splurge on makeup, buying a piece here or there that makes me feel good about myself is worth it to me.
What are you go-to makeup products?

I always have a hard time with drugstore eyeshadows because I don’t feel like they have great staying power (even with a primer), and they seem less pigmented. I love my Naked palette though! I’ve had mine for 5 years, and uhh it might be expired (not sure??), but it’s still working great so I’m still using it… haha.

I love that you have found a good mix of high and low. I wear makeup so infrequently that it’s hard to justify spending a lot on some things. If you are still pining for the naked palette but can’t justify it yet maybe try the coastal scents revealed palette. I got a small sample of it through birchbox and I love it, it costs way less and there are a ton of reviews saying people like it just as much and the colors are really similar. Weird question, are the mirenesse lip colors meant to be sharpened?

Everyone seems to love BBCream – i haven’t tried it. May have to check it out!!

@Mrs. High Heels: haha do they expire?!
One of the Sephora ladies told me she’s had her naked palette forever and still uses it!
@Cole: thanks for the recommendation! I’ll check it out. And no, it’s not a pencil. It’s more the consistency of lipstick, but different. It feels more hydrating.
@Mrs. Confetti: You should! I first tried garnier and wasn’t too impressed. But Dr. Jart’s is incredible. If you stop into sephora, they’re willing to give you about a week’s worth of a sample before you commit to buying – and also have a great return policy – even if you’ve used the product! I’ve gone there twice the last month and asked them to use their personal favorite products and do my whole face, and then I bought my favorites. Otherwise I feel overwhelmed with all the options!

I’m like you with the chapstick! I never really use anything else.

Oh man, this is my type of post!
I totally love makeup everything and I give everything a shot… I think different stuff works for different people but I think the most important thing is skincare! It’s like gesso on a canvas — you need to take care of what’s underneath even before you get started on painting. When I do makeup on people, if they have nice skin I say 90% of my job is already done! So I actually spend all my money on nice skincare (eye cream, lotions, night cream) and buy whatever for makeup. The only thing I dish out on for makeup is really good eyeliner, because my liners NEVER stay on!
@Mrs. High Heels: Yes makeup can expire! They collect germs over the years… I would get rid of makeup maybe every 2 years or so, depending on the product and quality!

@mrs. pen: what is bb cream? I’ve always heard about it but I never knew what it was

I don’t even want to tell you how old my makeup is…I should really just throw most of it out, especially since I never wear it. When I do wear makeup I swear by Make Up For Ever (mat velvet foundation) and Black Honey lipstick by Clinique!

@msmug: It stands for beauty balm – it tends to even skin tone, usually has SPF, can be a great base for foundation – but I love it because it gives me a great coverage without feeling heavy, but looks so natural and adjusts to whatever my skin tone currently is. Lately, it’s all I wear on my whole face other than bronzer to top it off! But you can even find tinted BB cream – I haven’t tried it though!
@Mrs. Pencil: great point! What are you favorite skin care products? I was using arbonne FC5 night cream for a long time but ran out and don’t know anyone else who sells it – but I love it! For face wash I use St. Ives apricot scrub.

I love #4. I’ve tried other brands but keep going back.
Tinted BB cream is my new fave. I used to use a brush but cleaning it was a PIA so I went back to fingers
And Burt’s bees Chapstick. Love that stuff!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Mrs. Stroller: Yes! Burt’s bees is the only chapstick I use. LOVE IT.

@Mrs. Pen: Oh man, I feel like I need to write a post about this because I recently changed my skincare line all due to baby stuff! I wanted to use all gentle products that wouldn’t be filled with anything that could irritate the baby when I snuggle and kiss him. So for now, I currently use REN from Sephora and I really like it! But everyone’s skin reacts differently to different products so it’s all about trial and error.

There are some really good drugstore eyeliners. My favorite is by Almay. Also love my Dior lip glow (new favorite product and it’s in my 5 minute routine too)!

i love reading about what mamas makeup routines are! i too try to balance high and low items. (not to mention its easier to get to the drug store than sephora. smile). i am struggling with the skin care portion however and would love any recommendations. particularly for makeup remover? i have found that my eyes are very sensitive and would like to try and find an inexpensive natural option. ideas? how about for facial cleanser and moisturizer?

Ooh, I’ll have to try that BB cream. I have been using Revlon and haven’t been overly in love with it, but lack the motivation to find something new.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Munchkin: For makeup remover I’ve actually been using tea tree oil cleansing pads from trader joes! It doesn’t remove eye makeup though, so I use water for that – and admit it’s a pain! For cleanser I use either the TJ cleansing pads or the St. Ives apricot scrub and really like both! They’re both on the low end
The nice thing about BB cream is it has natural moisturizer built in as well, so I don’t use any lotion except at night. My favorite night cream is FC5 from Arbonne – but I have a hard time finding it since I don’t know any arbonne consultants.

There is a generic version of the naked palette you listed above. I bought mine at Ulta-not sure if it is their version or if it’s by someone else. But it’s the same colors for a fraction of the price and the only eye shadow I use anymore!
I also use the Dr. Jart BB cream and LOVE it. Mines in a blue/green bottle though so I think the formula is a touch different. It is definitely worth the extra price.

@Mrs. Bee: the nyx Jumbo pencils are amazing and Nordstrom Rack always has a bunch.

@Munchkin: i use oil from dhc, but lots of other brands make it. i’ve been using it forever… it’s awesome! for eye makeup i use lancome bifacils. it’s pricey but it usually lasts me a long time and i’ve never found anything that works better.

i said the same thing to mrs. sea otter this week: i want to see an “after” photo of these make up routines….i don’t even need a “before”
